More to come!
The Rescue Dog
Side Dal
I took a little dog home that day,
He was ugly and bad, it's true,
Only I could see
His true beauty shining through.

I put him down at my front door,
So he could walk inside,
And when I opened up for him,
He just stood there, eyes open wide.

A big soft bed was there for him,
A fluffy blanket blue,
A heap of toys was nearby,
All bright and shiny and new.

All this for me he seemed to say,
His little eyes they shone,
No more need to bite, or cower, or cringe
All fear and anger gone.

He paid me back a thousand times
My furry faithful friend,
A better friend I never had
Right up until the end.

We walked a long and rocky road,
Through trouble, grief and strife,
And in the dark and stormy days
He gave meaning to my life.

I thought my heart would break,
When the time came for him to go,
I buried him in his blanket blue
Beneath the cold white snow.

Sometimes I still hear his little bark,
Feel the touch of a velvet paw,
And I still stoop down to greet him
When I open my front door.

Hello Dal Lover!

We hope everyone is enjoying their summer and finding fun ways to beat the heat with their favorite pooch. We know your schedules are all hectic, but would love it if you can remember our spotted rescues too.

Can YOU Spare Some Time???

Dalloween 2009

As you have heard by now, we are working hard to put together another Dal-loween Festi-Dal this October 17th to raise funds & just have some simple FUN! This is our third consecutive year with the event in this format with some new ideas, like the Mardi-Paws Parade, to try out. We do enjoy doing this event, but we could really use some help rounding up items for raffle and to auction. Last year we had some awesome items and we hope to repeat that. If you want to help then please let us know by contacting [email protected]. Items that can be used for a raffle or auction are only limited by your imagination. If it is something YOU LIKE then there is a good chance others will too. Gift certificates to restaurants, park passes, events tickets, "sin" items (liquor, smokes, chocolates, etc.), or pet related items are just a few of the things that can help us get money for our dogs. We'd be very happy to provide you with a letter that can assist you asking for donations and we will happily provide a receipt to the donor. We hope YOU are looking forward to this event as much as WE are!
Moving Slower Than a Hound in Summer...

Well we have finally reach summer & typically everything has slowed down, with the exception of intakes. We have had only a few adoptions this month. First to be adopted was Sylvester who went to live with Lee P. in NC where we hear he is doing well. Then there was 14-year-old Admiral in WA who got another chance after being dumped for a boyfriend. We even got a cute little shepherd/rottweiler mix named Emma into a new home in Tampa. Lastly, we are holding our breath that Oreo may finally have found his new home; we hope the final word comes soon!

Now here is where rescue gets "hairy" again and you ALL know how our fur-kids shed! This month we have taken in youngster Hunter, senior Cody, another GA Dooley, and an ailing Phoenix. Phoenix is having a very rough time & is now at Tampa Bay Vet Emergency Services in Clearwater. Her weight dropped 7 lbs. to 33 lbs. in a week!  Judy F. worked tirelessly to care for her, a big THANKS for all her help, but her needs have been too great to do this solely in a foster home. Another THANKS to Joyce D. who has once again provided a grant to cover the initial emergency vet estimate of $1200 to treat, but it will take more funding to save this 2-5 year old sweet girl pictured below.

We would also like to acknowledge the sudden passing of Fig Newton, Carly and Brian's sweet rescued boy, who now joins Tango across the Rainbow Bridge.

To date in 2009, we have rescued 34 new Dals/dogs beyond the 17 we had from 2008 that include 2 dogs back into rescue. We have found homes for 30 dogs plus 4 direct referrals that resulted in adoptions. Currently, we have 26 Dals & dogs under our care. Dals that are still seeking forever homes are:
  • Oreo a loving, yet goofy, young Dal-mix from Orange County
  • Eden a 9+ year old from Collier County now looking someone to call her own
  • Sister a deaf girl who recovered from starvation and awaits a home where she can be the only dog
  • Lady a 6-year-old overweight girl needing a home where she can become svelte again
  • Spooky a very handsome senior boy found abandoned on Halloween
  • Biff a lively 8-year-old Dal-mix
  • AnnaMae a 5-year-old girl now healthy again & looking for love
  • Keller a deaf Dal-mix girl in need of a special home
  • Cocoa from Pensacola, just 2 years old, but in HW treatment
  • Howie J. a returning 6-year-old with allergies
  • Hunter a barely 2-year-old small Dal boy from Alachua
  • Cody a 9-year-old senior Dal
  • Phoenix a 2-5 year old Dal girl with serious intestinal issues and who will later need HW treatment
  • Dooley II is another young Dal-mix from GA
We list all our adoptable dogs on www.Petfinder.com. We also have some additional courtesy posts for:
  • Finster, a Rotty-mix, who resides with Lee S. in Homosassa Springs
  • JLo, an AmStaff girl, here in the Tampa Bay area
  • Callie, a Dal-mix, also in the Tampa Bay area
  • Freckles 6-month-old Brittany Spaniel-mix
PLEASE let us know if you can help these dogs with a loving home or getting them to events so that they might get adopted!
