More to come!

Side Dal
Sleeping with your Dog

Now I lay me down to sleep,
The king-size bed is soft and deep.
I sleep right in the center groove
My human being can hardly move!
I've trapped her legs, she's tucked in tight
And here is where I pass the night.
No one disturbs me or dares intrude
Till morning comes and
"I want food!"

I sneak up slowly to begin
my nibbles on my human's chin.
She wakes up quickly,
I have sharp teeth-
I'm a puppy, don't you see?
For the morning's here
and it's time to play
I always seem to get my way.
So thank you Lord for giving me
This human person that I see.
The one who hugs and holds me tight
And shares her bed with me at night!

Hello Dal Lover!

Who couldn't love a puppy? But the fact is all dogs were pups once, yet many are now being discarded as if they had no longer had any value. Senior dogs are capable of love, companionship, and can enrich one's life with their deep devotion. Please consider an oldie, but goodie for your next best friend.

"Old dogs, like old shoes, are comfortable. They might be a bit out of shape and a little worn around the edges, but they fit well." - Bonnie Wilcox 'Old Dogs, Old Friends'
Grey Muzzles Give Lots of Love

AJ

We have helped many dogs at DRTB, but it seems the senior dogs need us the most. They are the dogs most often left behind in shelters, only to be euthanized after they spent their life giving love to a family who would discard them. Reasons or excuses for leaving them behind are numerous though many are still healthy with years of love left in them. Luckily for 14-year-old AJ (pictured), we found him a wonderful home. When he crossed the Rainbow Bridge this past Easter weekend he did so with the love & dignity he deserved.

Senior dogs, also called grey muzzles because they whiten with age, have advantages as pets for people who are special enough to recognize their uniqueness. Not all the seniors we place are as old as AJ; we consider a senior to be 8 years or above. Usually, when you adopt a senior dog, what you see is what you get. Often house-training is complete, they understand "no", don't inappropriately chew, and they already know how to interact with families and other pack members. Their ability to love is not diminished by age and they are almost instant companions. A senior could be less demanding of your time and even let you get some sleep. For those want a shorter-term commitment, the senior dog is ideal, depending upon situation. Health issues can occur at any age, but many issues seen in seniors are manageable.

Currently, we are pursuing a grant that will enable us to better care for the seniors we have and to attempt to place more senior dogs into loving homes. Could one of our grey muzzles have a place with you?
It's a Doggie Love Fest

This past month we have been very fortunate getting dogs into forever homes. We started this year with an overabundance of dogs, and while we thought we hit the jackpot getting them re-homed, the ante was upped with even more coming in!

April saw Jazzy's, aka Jinxey, adoption becoming final along with long-term foster Sandy adopting seniors Bandit, Pepper, & Val to be her forever Dals. We also heard that Missy, the very over-bred Valdosta girl, will have her forever home with Tracy D., her foster. Perkins, pictured with Marla below, also left for his forever home and joins another Dal named Lucky who had been left homeless by a military deployment. Our sometimes-bad boy, Harley, has finally found a new home without other dogs and hard at work on his manners. Dooley, who kissed his way from euthanasia into a new life, has got a family that appreciates all the love he has to give. There was also Lucy in Orange County who we managed to hook up with a new home. Volunteer Pat A. decided to adopt Ms. Skittles, we think her beloved Jiggs would have approved. Our special needs adoption this month was for Waggs a 2-year-old deaf Dal who had just lost his rear leg after being hit by a car. More good news is that Cruz is poised to join Molly in their new home beginning of this month. Even foster dad Jay gave in and decided that his special rescue Kenworth was home to stay.

Susie Cricket & Clover

So far in 2009, we have rescued 30 new Dals/dogs beyond those we had from last year. We have found homes for 21 plus 4 direct referrals that resulted in adoptions. Currently, there are just under 30 Dals & dogs in our care. Dals that are still seeking forever homes are:
  • Oreo a loving, yet goofy, young Dal-mix from Orange County
  • Eden a 9+ year old from Collier County now looking someone to call her own
  • Sister a deaf girl who recovered from starvation and awaits a home where she can be the only dog
  • Lady a 6-year-old overweight girl needing a home where she can become svelte again
  • Spooky a very handsome senior boy found abandoned on Halloween
  • Sylvester (or Sly) from Putnam County a very shy 5-year-old, liver boy just finished with HW treatment
  • Biff a lively 8-year-old Dal-mix
  • AnnaMae a 5-year-old girl with a benign mammary tumor, soon beginning HW treatment
  • Susie a 1-2 years old spaniel-mix from Americus, GA & mother to Clover & Cricket that were rescued as a trio
  • Cricket a 3.5 month old Dal-mix girl that favors dad
  • Clover a 3.5 month old Dal-mix girl that favors mom
  • Luna a 10-year-old girl who is a bit shy
  • Limo a 7-year-old male with lots of personality

We list all our adoptable dogs on www.Petfinder.com. We also have a courtesy posts for young Finster, a Rotty-mix, who resides with Lee S. in Homosassa Springs; Molly, a 1.5 year old Dal-mix in Gainesville; plus one for JLo, an AmStaff girl. PLEASE let us know if you can help these dogs with a loving home or getting them to events so that they might get adopted!
Our Special Dals

We have a few Dals that we want to bring to your attention so that we can find them good homes soon.

The Putnam Dals: Dixie Sly & Pixie

First is Sylvester who was part of a family of Dals rescued from Putnam County the first of this year. Sly is the liver spotted Dal in the center (above with Dixie his sister & Pixie his Mom). He is a shy boy who has just begun to emerge from his shell. Both females have been adopted and only Sylvester remains. We would really like him to get into his own home soon.

Limo

Then there is Limo who is our most recent urgent plea with Luna. They are living in an empty house with no one! Luna has a potential home with another of our rescued Dals, but 7-year-old Limo will be left all alone. He's a very sweet boy, completely healthy, and really needs to get a human of his own.

Can Anyone help our special Dals???

A special postscript: Pat J., who adopted Pixie, suddenly passed away last week; her family will continue to care for Pixie. Our deepest condolences to her family.
