Saved by a Kiss!
Meet Dooley! This little boy was on the euthanasia table at a shelter in Americus, GA unbeknownst to us when a volunteer went to pick-up another rescue named Skittles. Dooley SAVED HIS OWN LIFE with a KISS just before receiving the injection that would end his life. The shelter worker just could not do it to such a sweet boy. Since he was spotted we got the call despite his very mixed heritage (we are calling him a Dal/Pointer/CattleDog-mix). We just could not say no to such a sweet dog that came so close to losing his life.
Of course, some things aren't as easy to accomplish as you might think. Finding transport for Dooley out of Americus to Judy F., his foster in Florida was fraught with failed attempts. It was difficult to find a volunteer able to drive to Americus. We even had a plea on the PilotsNPaws board to fly him south, but high winds grounded Pilot Jeff. With the next weekend's weather making a flight unlikely, a plea from Jay C. on Facebook brought us a connection to a transport from Griffin, GA to Orlando. We want to thank Laurie and driver Carmen for getting this boy safely home.
Dooley still has a long road ahead of him. He has heartworms & must be treated. One of the ways to help him are through an auction we will begin April 5th on our website of a print donated by Carol Chretien (details in Save a Spot below). All donations are welcome. |
Spring forward ...
Spring has sprung, the clocks have been moved forward, and Dals like young Skittles have bounced into rescue. So on we go trying to rehabilitate and find them homes.
In March we managed to place several Dals. Molly from Brevard County has found her home. We hope they have a nice bathtub for her to sleep in if she wishes. Longtime DRTB supporter Chris D. added to her clan by adopting young Freckles so now Gracie will have a playmate close in age. Elsie came to us as an owner-surrender and luckily we had a waiting adopter for her. We even helped get a lost dog home. Little Dotty had dug out of her fence without a collar or tags. A concerned person worried for her safety running loose so we were called. A scan by Dr. Hong showed she had a microchip. Turns out she was only a few houses away from her home, but without a tag it took time (& some sleepless nights) to get her returned.
Other Dal-mixes coming into rescue this past month are Skittles, a Dal/Jack Russell Terrier-mix who is very active and oh so cute. She was at the same Americus, GA shelter where we later picked up Dooley the amazingly sweet boy who kissed his way to getting a new life at the right moment. So far in 2009, we have
rescued 17 new Dals/dogs beyond those we had from last year.
We have found homes for 12 plus a direct referral that resulted in
an adoption. Currently, there are almost 30 Dals & dogs in our care. Recently, we had to say goodbye to Cloud, a big white German Shepherd, one of the sanctuary dogs who suffered a massive stroke. Dals that are still seeking forever homes are:
- Oreo a loving, yet goofy, young Dal-mix from Orange County
- Eden a 8+ year old from Collier County now looking someone to call her own
- Sister a deaf girl who recovered from starvation and awaits a home where she can be the only dog
- Spooky a very handsome senior boy found abandoned on Halloween
- Prissy renamed Missy from Valdosta who is a 5-year-old formerly HW+ Dal
- Perkins a 6-year-old mix
from Alachua
- Sylvester (or Sly) from Putnam County a 2-year-old, HW+, liver boy who is almost through treatment
- Harley a happy 8-year-old Dal-mix who URGENTLY needs a new foster
- Biff
a lively 8-year-old Dal-mix
- AnnaMae a 5 year old HW+ girl with a benign mammary tumor soon beginning treatment
- Cruz a very handsome 11-year-old boy from Brevard who acts very young for his age
- Skittles a very cute & bouncy 4-6 months old Dal/JRT-mix
- Dooley a 1.5-year-old Dal/CattleDog-mix, HW+, who kissed his way from euthanasia into rescue
We list all our adoptable dogs on www.Petfinder.com. We also have a courtesy post for Kenworth, a 1.5 year old Lab/Hound-mix, who is with our foster Jay near Jacksonville and young Finster, a Rotty-mix, who resides with Lee S. in Homosassa Springs plus one for JLo. PLEASE let us know if you can help these dogs with a loving home or getting them to events so that they might get adopted! |
