Sat Nam Dear Yoga Friends, Thanks to all of you who came to our workshops at Yoga Village and Bija Yoga in Florida and Give Yoga in Memphis. We had an amazing time and we were totally inspired by your KEEP UP SPIRIT!
This issue features Part 2 of our Shallow Questions for Deep Women series with our special guest Wah! We are big fans of Wahs work and style and are thrilled to be able to share in her great Beauty Wisdom (see below).
Here's a thought we had while musing about Life and Yoga while on the road: The key to success in life and Spirit is to find your neutral. While driving a stick shift you have to pass through neutral to access another gear. In the face of life and its exigencies, we have to pass through neutral before we act and react. In yoga this is called Neutral Mind. This entails no judgements. It's direct knowing and direct perception. Neutral Mind is also called Witness Consciousness and Meditative Mind. Like anything else it takes training and practice in the arena of life to arrive at this. With regard to the people in your life, try to find a neutral space. Don't let your pre-judgements impinge upon every interaction. If you can do that with them, they can more often find that place of balance with you. Even in our physical yoga practice poor body habits and mis-alignments taken on, when slumping in front of the TV and computer screen, will often perpetuate. Yoga is designed to help us arrive at neutral so that new patterns, ones which are more conducive to optimum energy flow can be applied. Overall, finding your neutral creates a vacuum which the Universe rushes to fill!
We hope to see all of you at our upcoming workshop in Philadelphia, at Teacher Training at Give Yoga in Memphis and at our Spring Equinox Yoga Retreat in beautiful Lake Placid, NY. see below for more info.

Shallow Questions for Deep Women (and men too) Part 2: Wah!
Beauty information abounds! We pick up hints, tips and advice from glossy magazines, dermatologists, beauty editors, skin care gurus, celeb- rities and models. Some of the advice is good, some.... beware!!! Logic may say, 'They wouldn't put some- thing in my skin care that could harm me!' But the truth is, many of the household name products women have trusted for years are full of chem- icals and often do not contain even one nurturing ingredient! Obviously, we all want to make the best choices, and not be putting something on our delicate dermis' that may damage our health down the road. Understandable too, that some of us have been slow to get on the natural beauty bandwagon. The original all-natural formulas often were a little unglamorous, and even worse, irritating or ineffective. But WOW, HAS NATURAL BEAUTY COME A LONG WAY BABY! Even many of the big companies are figuring out how to use nature to help and heal us! There are so many awesome super sophisticated and super effective all natural/organic new formulations, I can't keep up with all of them, which is just the way I like it!
For our Shallow Questions for Deep Women series, we were inspired to go directly to "Women on the Path" These are women who, every day, are making the effort to be a little more conscientious, a little greener, a little healthier, a little more glowing and beautiful! THESE ARE THE BEAUTY "EXPERTS" WE TRUST!
After our first edition of this subject we were blown away by the response and amazing ideas from so many of you deep women! It's definitely true that women from all paths of life love to share their products and beauty tricks. I was inspired to try quite a few new products (Pratima Neem Rose Suncreen is a definite winner. "Yes to Carrots," I have not yet tried, but it seems to be one of your faves)) as well as look at old school natural beauty favorites, Weleda & Dr. Hauschka (see letter in Q & A's below) with new eyes. Our hope is that we all come away from this deep beauty discussion inspired to take better care of ourselves, KEEP UP & BE BEAUTIFUL!
For February, enter Wah! She is laid back, crazy cool (a Kirtan Rock Star!) and the type of fascinating woman you just want to know more about! Thanks Wah! for sharing this little glimpse into your beauty lab!
Wah!: Jai ma! I had long hair for most of my life until too much salt water (surfing in Los Angeles) and a few health disasters caused all my hair to break off! Oops! So I started taking better care of my hair and skin. When I was in Italy last summer, a folk remedy got passed on to me: massage a few drops of olive oil into your skin before retiring for the night. I started this practice, and have been using it ever since! I even use olive oil massage after airplane rides to neutralize any bad effects from radiation and air pollution! Olive oil is good for your skin! Use small amounts. One of my favorite hair care products is recommended by my best friend Sequoia Neptune, who did lots of research on raw food and alternative products. It's called MSM Naturally Pure Conditioner, distributed by Sun Star Organics in Orange, CA. www.sunstarorganics.com. We use it (and it is recommended) on face, hair, nails, everything. It soaks right in, soothes my brain cells too! MSM is a vital supplement, righteous in every way. As far as face care, I exclusively use products designed by Tracie Martyn. http://traciemartyn.com/ Marius, her husband is a licensed chemist and has figured out how to create really great products using only natural organic ingredients. If you can only buy one thing, buy the Purifying Cleanser, that stuff can rejuvenate your skin more than any single product. If you are in NYC, stop by for a treatment. You'll be sure to run into a celebrity or two. Or just take a light bath in their new LED medical laser - 15 minutes and you'll be all set for a whole week! The product I wish I had a better source for is essential oils. 6 years ago I got turned on to Young Living Essential Oils - a small, independently run company with high quality products - but it quickly swelled into a large, highly promoted company. I am now looking (always looking!) for new sources for esssential oils - small companies that make small batches of essential oil products. If you know a good company, write Ravi and Ana and they'll share with all of us! Essential Oils are amazing for the skin and overall health. I inhale a few drops before going on a plane so I don't have any viruses lingering in my system. My last health tip: baths! Like Ana, my bathroom is my shrine, my altar,my transformation room. I have candles near the bath and sink, essential oils, a clock, and good music available (hooray for mantras!) I take baths in lavender oil, epsom salt, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide, sometimes all in the same bath! Soaking for 30 minutes, either in silence, or listening to mantras, is one of my favorite practices. I use make up sparingly but it's a great tool! Some lip gloss and mascara can do wonders as a quick fix. Wearing bright colors, and just putting some good energy into how you look can do so much to improve your own vibration and the vibration around you. The Self is God, so make it beautiful! All worship in Divine! Ana & Ravi: You can learn more about Wah! at Www.wahmusic.com. Wah! has a great new CD out called LOOPS N GROOVES, available on itunes, amazon, and everywhere. Feeling Emotions
Hello! I am very new to your videos...but am loving them! I have a question within the Fat Free Yoga video. Near the end we are asked to feel 3 emotions if memory serves - and at some point we are supposed to turn them into another emotion. I am not clear on this process...and was hoping you could clarify this for me. When I begin to feel the emotion either anger, sadness or fear - and then we are asked to take a deep breath and still feel this emotion - I find that I am unable to do this.
As soon as I take a deep breath - I disconnect from the emotion. Perhaps this is a neat trick that we are supposed to become aware of...??...but I don't believe so. Can you explain this process - and how/when we are supposed to visualize or turn our emotions into their positive counterparts during this exercise?
Are we to visualize the emotion in our hands? I realized that I had created a ball of positive energy on my hands at the end of this practice...just before we raise our hands above our heads. Your time and clarification is appreciated. Thank you!
Thanks for writing. Very often when anger, sadness, grief, or fear are unresolved, as a result of past pain and trauma, we tend to express those emotions unconsciously, and ironically are unable to feel or delve into those feelings consciously. For instance, the proper response to anger would be determination, but many people's response to inner anger is rage, resentment, and the destruction, in intention or deed, of people and things around them. They project blame outwards, not realizing that anger can actually be channeled creatively to do something about the reasons for that anger. Learning to "feel our feelings," is the first step in transforming unincorporated emotions into their positive polarities.
Re: the Meditation on Fat Free Yoga: In the context of a Kundalini Yoga Meditation, when invoking an old emotion, rather than trying to visualize an incident, it is far more effective to feel your feelings around it. Emotion is one of the most important modes of expression in the human experience. Practice feeling angry by thinking of a situation which made you angry or frustrated. Same with sadness, grief, etc. A baby goes through the full range of emotions every day. For a live well-lived it is important to have access to the full spectrum of emotions (not to indulge in them), but to perceive the beautiful nuances of life and existence. We know this is a lot of words around a simple fact: we always have a choice for turning negative emotions into their positive polarities: sadness>gladness, grief>gratefulness, anger>inspiration. We wish you joy, health, and abundant blessings!
Under the Influence
Dear Ana & Ravi; in your last newsletter, you mentioned something about taking drugs opening our third eye prematurely. Can you expand on that topic? Drug use can mimic higher states of consciousness but the difference is actually night and day. In some cultures (such as the Amazonian shamans' use of ahayhuasca), certain substances (along with disciplined preparation and purification) purportedly assisted in quantum leaps in consciousness. To use that or similar examples as a pretext to indulge in psychedelics is a huge trap on the Path. Nothing is for free and use of drugs drains one's pranic body and dries up cerebral spinal fluid and ojas (the lubricating energy conducting, fluid of the spine). This inhibits the process of Kundalini Rising. Authors such as Carlos Castaneda, Terrence McKenna, and Timothy Leary, whose writings are very enticing, claimed that psychedelics could be used to shatter the boundaries of illusion. Their writings don't really mention that the use of drugs is not healthy and there is a price to be paid. What we do defines us and has a bearing on what becomes of us. Bottom line: we feel that drug use is a complete dead end and that Kundalini Yoga is a billion times better. We do feel that, when absolutely necessary, some drugs can be a godsend for the relief of pain. Many people swear that marijuana, when used medicinally, has therapeutic advantages over everything else they've tried. We can't argue with the necessity to ease one's suffering, but we do encourage everyone to get to the root causes for whatever is going on, and to honestly assess whether there is a physical or psychological dependence on anything. If so, set an intention to create a relationship with Energy and Essence. The need for stop gaps will fall away. It may take a day, or it may take 10 years, but if you keep your intention strong, you will be victorious. Draw upon that inner aspect which is already complete, fulfilled, and blissful. Hatha and Kundalini
Sat Nam Ana and Ravi,Happy, healthy, holy 2012 to you both. Thank you for your newsletters and advice so we can be the best people we want to be. I've been wanting to ask you about what you would do, or what you think about the following situation:
I teach Kundalini Yoga and Meditation in a yoga studio that is predominately a Hatha studio. There is a 200 hour Vinyasa teacher training certification that the owners of the studio coordinate and lead. Unfortunately, I know the words used to describe KY&M in teacher training have not been positive, and one quote that was made to future teachers learning about yoga that was "Kundalini Yoga Sucks." This statement bothers me. Kundalini Yoga and Meditation is beautiful. All yoga is beautiful. I've invited colleagues to Aquarian Sadhana and my classes (the owners have not taken my class) so they could have another experience, and could provide feedback if they are interested in sharing their thoughts. Another mindset I have taken on is that perhaps we just think differently; I'm glad I like all kinds of yoga. Sometimes I wonder if it would be better to look for another place to teach yoga. Thank you, Sat Nam,
Thanks for writing. We feel that your questions raises an important issue. It is true that Kundalini Yoga and Meditation are sometimes misunderstood in the greater yoga community. There are a few basic reasons for this. The most prevalent one is that you have to practice KY to get a real sense of what it's all about, and many people who put it down base their judgment on how it looks, which for the uninformed, is sometimes very different from anything they've encountered before.
Bottom line, people make fun of what they don't understand. Often the most vocal opponents of something become that thing's greatest champions over time. Think of how Rome, in the early days, so vehe- mently persecuted Christians, and now it's called Roman Catholicism!
Kundalini Yoga is all about Spirit Rising and that is what all yoga is meant to be directed towards. Kundalini Yoga imbues those who practice it with an inner light which tends to uplift everything within its sphere. In that sense when the going gets tough the tough get glowing! We are sure that your radiance will turn the tide and that you'll be able to inspire people in that yoga studio to appreciate KY. More than half of the workshops we teach around the world are in hatha/vinyasa studios. We wish you joy, health, and abundant blessings!
Beauty Feedback Re: Dr. Hauschka
Thank you for addressing the "shallow" issues. Years ago I used to work at a health food store and was trained in the cosmetics section by a rep from the dr hauska line. They also represent Weleda. They are intense. They all meditate before they go to work, they do not want any negativity affecting their products. They go to great lengths to make sure no sun rays or was it moon--get to the rose petals that are hand picked so they get certain vibes on it while its in this hibernation mode, so many feet under this all natural cave like setting-- When they pick the roses, they must be happy. When you wash your face, you do this little honoring ritual, get a nice towel, etc. I had to give this some careful thought. The bottom line is, have you ever seen an Angel that looked unkept? All of them are attractive! I saw someone like that once, and that was probably the main thing that I realized it was some sort of holy person, was the beauty reviberated into my eye sockets so heavily that I was transformed up. Like art or something. Hard to explain. But its anything BUT shallow, it is holy. (I think it was some- one like Jesus, not an Angel. Nobody else saw it, and it happened in years ago in a place like Walmart of all places. I kid you not. lol! I was transfixed, could hardly move, like electricity and love type of thing) |
is Breath Meditation for Super Creativity
Sit with a straight spine. Your hands are in Maha Gyan Mudran. Your ring and little fingers are curled under your thumbs, index and middle fingers extended and side by side. Have your hands at throat level, forearms parallel to the ground. The index and middle finger tips of either hand are meeting their counterparts in front of the throat. Your eyes are 1/10 open looking down and in towards the tip of the nose. Inhale for 3 seconds. Hold the breath for 5 seconds. Exhale for 10 - 15 seconds. Continue this breath pattern for 11 min.
Commentary: This mudra or hand position represents our Energy and Communication (ring and little fingers) under the aegis of our Wisdom and Discipline (index and middle fingers). The Throat Chakra relates to the element ether. On the etheric plane thoughts are things. Whatever we think manifests in the moment. On the physical plane, this process is the same, but protracted. When our Throat Chakras are open the Universe can speak through us. We can be direct, eloquent, and spontaneously creative. All things came into being through a Divine Utterance. This is known as the Logos or Word. When our Throat Chakras are activated each of us is granted Vac Siddhi, the Great Voice. May we use that power to bless all, amplify Truth, and broadcast beauty and healing to all. Sat Nam! |
