"You know a Teacher
is doing a good job when their students can get along fine without
them."
"Let
your soul be the touchstone."
Dear Yoga Friends,
Happy September everyone! You are probably wondering just what do we mean with our No More Gurus
headline? After all, many books tell us that one needs a "qualified guru," for the practice of yoga. Yes, life is hard, life is tricky, and it keeps coming at us! Relax! Even though you might not have a great sage at your beck and call, you can still have your guru and guidance too!
Guru is a Sanskrit word comprised of gu, darkness, ru, light. So, guru is whatever brings us from darkness to light, ignorance to clarity, sleeping to waking, etc. The problem is that in the Indian culture (and the yoga world), the word guru has become synonymous with a human being, and not just any human being, but one who seemingly knows what's best for us better than us! One who sees what we don't see, and is is so far beyond us that we can only surmise the magnitude of their attainment. Well, that all sounds good on paper, but in practical reality we feel there are some problems with that model.
It is common to fantasize about a wise mentor who can help us to navigate around the rocks and shoals of life, and who helps us to maximize our potential. There's nothing wrong with that, but when we project unreal expectations onto someone a dysfunctional dynamic is created. Many people have become so confused based on the books they've read about yoga and spirituality, that they've lost perspective. The great lesson in all of this is: Gurus are people too! Keep that in mind and you can't go wrong!
Is a Teacher necessary to make progress on the Spiritual Path? The answer is yes and no. Yes, in the sense that we need someone to give us the tools and direction to progress efficiently. No, in the sense that it is not necessary to give away our power or to "surrender" our egos, to another person, as we progress on our paths of self-healing. Don't worry, they'll be plenty of opportunities to have your humility tested. Life itself is the ultimate Guru. If you are willing to pay attention to what life presents, in concert with your inner work of choice, you'll learn more than any "guru," could ever teach you.
It's important to assess the integrity and motives of anyone with whom you study, but have you taken the time to assess your own? Are you taking a yoga class because the Teacher gives you attention, or because it's a hip scene? Are you studying with someone because they never take you out of your comfort zone? Teachers tend to patronize their patrons. Be honest with yourself. As far as the Spiritual Path is concerned, we are all baby birds. Don't pretend you're a jet plane, but also, don't deny your own wings.
Why is all of this important? Because many of you who are reading this are Yoga Teachers or Teachers in Training. Virtually all of you have some kind of relationship with a Spiritual Teacher(s). What's occurring in the US (and the rest of the Western world) is that yoga is becoming intrinsic to the culture we're in, and evolving in interesting ways. As part of that process it's important to take nothing for granted, but to hold everything up to the light to see if it's true for you.
One difficulty with Yoga and Spirituality is that there is a hidden dimension to these teachings, which includes things which can't be measured. It is not the intention of the Universe to confuse you. If you experience something which you're unsure about, just be patient and see what unfolds. Also, if your Teacher claims or implies that he/she is operating under the aegis of some astral or extra-dimensional authority, be very wary.
Everyone wants and edge in life. Everyone wants to be associated with someone who has some extra "pull," with the powers that be. It may be that you have a sort of soul contract to study with certain Teachers. It may be that with regard to certain Teachers/Teachings, there is a kind of magnetic pull which inspires you to keep coming back. All of that is valid, but make sure you arrive at your own certainties. Ultimately, there is no need to follow anyone. Lead yourself. Kundalini Yoga is the yoga of Self-Reliance. It will give you the awareness, creativity, strength, focus, and energy, to be healthy, happy, and fulfilled. There are no perfect Teachers, but there are perfect practices. All you have to do is do them! ======================================================

New England Yoga Weekend Nov. 12 - 14Chester, CT We loved the August retreat in GA! Walking the green rolling grounds to the yoga room. We especially loved meeting all you AMAZING yogis along the way, and/or at meals! The energy of the classes continually took us all higher and inspired us to new heights! We loved Chef Willy's masterfully delish meals, whether we were veggies, rawies, fishies, whatever! We loved the fresh mountain air and again, the opportunity to become better acquainted with you guys!!
In fact, we had such an AMAZING time that we immediately got busy planning another! We weren't sure that we could find another retreat locale which would include all the nice touches: seriously comfortable rooms, private bathrooms, spacious yoga space, and startlingly fresh air of the last setting but yay we did it! Seriously, this place is amazing, it is very accessible yet a very private, woodsy area adjacent to State Forest with hiking trails, and 2 neighboring lakes. The vibe is very New Englandy, charming and rustic, and after doing loads of research and having lots of talks with the lovely sweet owners, who mentioned that the pretty Fall foliage lasts well into Nov. as well as the fabulous & fun town of Chester nearby, we have our hearts set on Guest House Retreat Center in CT!
The best thing about a Kundalini Yoga Retreat is that it takes us as we are and lifts us to where we needed to be! If you are after some more peace in your life, some more will power, some transformational activity in body, mind, soul or circumstance, this is an opportunity to get a flying start into a higher echelon of being!
The cost for this whole event (2 nights accommodation, including meals) $600 (double room occupancy). First dibs will go to those of you who come with someone or are willing to room with someone (rooms are SPACIOUS, each with a private bathroom). The first yoga session will be Friday Nov. 12th at 4p.m. There will be a before bed talk and meditation on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as two yoga sessions on Saturday, as well as a yoga session on Sunday morning. The session on Sunday will end at noon.
Our last retreat sold out pretty quickly and we can only accept 35 people so don't delay! To register (we're already more than half full), please call us at 212.982.5518 or e-mail us at ravianayoga@aol.com. Registration will require a non-refundable $300 deposit to hold your space. We can accept payment via credit card or paypal (ravianayoga@aol.com). Also, those who attend will accrue 15 hours towards our 200 hr. Yoga Alliance Teacher Training certification. We look forward to seeing you there!

Questions of the MonthOm Away from Om
Hi Guys,
First let me say that I started Kundalini Yoga with your K. Yoga for Beginners & Beyond 4 years ago and I love your workouts! They've changed my life! I've been seeing a lot lately that people are putting out DVDs etc. with titles like 'No Om Zone,' etc. Other yogis sort of brag that they don't do chanting in their classes and they eat meat, and basically champion a hedonistic mindset. Is this sort of a backlash to spirituality? I would appreciate your take on all of this. Blessings to your both!
Thanks
for writing. You bring up a very important point. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, but we do feel that asserting that mantras and what they represent, in the context of yoga, are superfluous, is like a prisoner trying to convince the other prisoners that the outside world doesn't exist. Yoga is trendy (for good reason) now and everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon to make a buck. There's Nude Yoga, Yoga for Your Pets, S & M Yoga, and the list goes on. On the other hand, in certain ways, Yoga is evolving in powerful ways. Part of this evolution is its focus on Spirit. It's good to try to make yoga palatable to the "mainstream," but it's very important not to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Yoga is a technology which has been developed by masterful technicians of the sacred so that regular people can live in the flow of Spirit each day of their lives. Mantras keep us tuned to the frequency of the most beautiful part of us. The sound Om is the Universe itself. In Kundalini Yoga we use the derivation, "Ong," but it's all part of the same continuum of Teachings. We encourage everyone to look into the Spiritual side of yoga. Try to experience it with your Heart, not your head, and be open to where the experience leads. As we've said before, techniques like chanting "Om," etc., are not from a foreign culture, they are beyond culture and help us to experience to the most authentic aspect of each of us..
Spiritual Significance of Turning 40
Hi Ravi and Ana, Thanks for a great newsletter (the one below) with your response about karma to one of your readers. I have a question for you: I'm turning 40 in October, and am curious if yoga has anything to say about that age in a person's life (woman or man.) I tried to do some internet research on it, but couldn't find anything. I know you mentioned the age of 36 not so long ago in a newsletter, and wonder what texts/sources you were referring to on that as well.
Thanks for the great work you do and for sending out your fun and enlightening newsletters!
Thanks for writing. There isn't anything in the Kundalini teachings about turning 40 per se, but ages 36 and 44 are significant. 36 is a cycle of completion when one should start thinking about the quality of one's inner life as a balance to the outer (not that it's not a good idea to do that earlier as well.). According to Yogi Bhajan, at age 36,the pituitary starts secreting in a way that deepens our desire for things of the Spirit and also begins to give us a sense of our mortality. It's a crossroads between youth and maturity. Age 44 is a cycle of consciousness when a quantum leap is called for into the next iteration of Self. We are going to be discussing all of this in greater detail in the vastly updated version of Count Your Blessings (tantric numerology book) we are going to publish after we finish and publish our Kundalini Yoga book. We wish you joy, health, and many blessings!
Breaking Up Is Hard to Do
Dear Ana and Ravi, Thank you for all your dvds and advice. I enjoy many of them, and normally rotate them simply based on my preference at the time. However, I currently have some particular issues I would like to focus on resolving and would like your input as to which dvds and particular exercises would be most effective. I recently left an emotionally abusive relationship, and I have a lot of healing to do. I need to resolve my hurt and anger toward my ex and a couple other family members. Perhaps more important, I need to forgive myself and improve my general self esteem so I can move on and believe in my ability to have healthy relationships and that I am deserving of them. I am particularly concerned about that. I have noticed when doing your dvds that I really feel the effects of those focusing on the heart center, and I have physical problems relating my upper back, shoulders, and neck as well. I have read some information online illuminating these connections, but I am a novice in those areas, and I do not know how reputable some internet sources are. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my questions. Thank you!
Thanks for writing. We are sorry to hear that you have experienced a life challenge. Tension in various parts of the body often does relate to a block in the corresponding chakra. When energy is blocked, more often than not, it stems from an emotional issue. The Heart Center and Navel Chakra balance one another and it would be good to continue to focus on these through your Kundalini Yoga practice. Working on the Navel Chakra provides energetic support for the upper chakras. In addition, working the core muscles, provides physical support for the upper body.
In terms of self-esteem and supporting an open heart, it is very important to strengthen our Navel Chakras. A strong Navel Chakra will helps us to turn lemons into lemonade faster than anything! As we've said many times in our newsletters, etc., a strong Navel Chakra is the most expedient means to putting the brakes on with regard to painful patterns of the past and in creating new positive momentums. Without the support of the Navel Chakra, a person will tend to go to extremes when relating to the Heart. This would entail alternating between a manic mood and bouts of sadness. We recommend that you practice: Navel
Power, Kundalini Yoga Transformer, A Journey thru the Chakras, Fat Free Yoga, and the Sa-Ta-Na-Ma Meditation (which will wash that man right out of your aura!) which is on both Yoga Quick Fixes and Yoga House Call. We wish you joy, health, and blessings!

Meditation of the Month
Extend your arms to a 60 degree angle. Incline your head back keep the back of your neck long. Eyes closed. Focus at the Third Eye. Chant:
Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo
in a melody which moves you. Check out this beautiful rendition:
http://tinyurl.com/2g737a9
Try to build the practice of this to 11 minutes and consider doing this for 40 days.
Initially, you might feel uncomfortable or even agitated as you practice this. That simply means that your glands need work and are being worked on and that your mind is testing you. Focus through the brow and bring your mind under conscious control. This exercise is a metaphor for your life. Be steady!
When we put ourselves under pressure in the context of the work on ourselves then time and space defer to Grace. That means we are blessed and have the power to bless. The ultimate Guru is the flow of the Teachings of Spirit and when we dedicate ourselves to a committed practice the implications are truly profound!
This kriya is for happiness and opens us to the guidance and blessings of Infinity. It's said that if you take one step towards the Infinite the Infinite will take a million steps towards you. Make this meditation a sacred endeavor. Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo means: Infinite Creative Consciousness I Call On You. Divine Wisdom Within I Call On You. This is a means of opening ourselves to the Universal Teacher and to train ourselves to be conduits for these amazing Teachings. This is the mantra which we chant to begin every Kundalini Yoga class. Despite all of our foibles and imperfections as humans, when we chant this mantra the Teachings remain pure.
