News & Notes
Happy January everyone! First we want to wish you all a joyous, fun-filled, successful, and loving New Year! What can we expect in 2010? Change is in the air. Can you feel it? For instance, we predict, that as open-minded and progressive as President Obama is, he's going to be hard-pressed to keep up with people's desire for radical change. The collective consciousness is evolving! 2010 is a 3 year. 3 represents Jupiter, expansion. 2 is relationship. 1 is soul. It's a great time to grow our souls! 3 is also the ability to give hope to people and to embrace your inner optimist. The gift to all of us in 2010 is the inner toughness to go through anything with a smile. Nerves of steel and mental resiliency. You can draw upon those attributes to do great things. As always keep your Kundalini Yoga practice strong and use your gifts to make a difference.
***Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training***'The most important thing to a Teacher is, "Can I inspire people to be ten times better than me?" Without that commitment to teaching people to be greater than great, the
legacy of the Golden Chain will be broken.' --Yogi Bhajan
We've had a great response and are excited to announce that we will be conducting a 200 hr. Teacher Training Certification at Give Yoga in Memphis starting in February. If you're interested contact Olivia (901)493.1431/olivialomax@yahoo.com. Please don't think that you're not ready to be a Kundalini Yoga Teacher just because you're not "flexible," or "athletically inclined." What's important is that you feel a calling to make a difference in people's lives and further your own practice. It's a total win-win!
Yogi Bhajan also said that, "If
you want to master something teach it." Being a Kundalini Yoga Teacher
may be on your list current projects, but if you're interested in
deepening your practice, enjoying the company of some great Kundalini
Yogis, and delving into the mysteries of yoga and life, please consider
attending. Also, did you know that you can also attend many of these
classes as individual workshops?

Diet Confusion
Dear Ravi
and Ana, I need help! I have a beautiful Kundalini Yoga cookbook called
" The Kundalini Yoga Cookbook" that is so well written, and I want to
follow all of the advice, especially since it comes straight from YB, but,
I cannot handle all the spices - or nuts... or grains. I get
headaches, stomach-aches, gain weight, puffy eyes, and I don't feel close
togreat. I am on the Kundalini Yoga teacher path - I really want
to follow "the Rules." But I can't, at least not at this time
in my life.
Natalia Rose - (are you familiar with her?) Has a great
program - raw juices for most of the day, and a big salad, with some fresh
fish, and/or raw goat cheese, and, maybe, some La Loos Goat milk ice
cream for desert! I feel "Great" - energy wise when I follow that plan. But
I feel "terrible" in the sense that I am not eating ... mung beans
and rice, etc.,and I do eat fish. She also recommends eggs 0-4 times
per week.
I really would love, love, love to know your thoughts on
this Food Business. Perhaps you have a DVD out that discusses food
one that I must not have yet... (I think I have pretty much all of your
DVD's...) Or maybe you can refer me someone I can contact. (I live
incalifornia.)
I am a Hatha Yoga teacher, (Not Cert Kundalini...
yet!) and I just feel like I "should" be on the diet Yogi Bhajan put forth,
like i'm not authentic or something if I can't do it..
I'm not going
to reread this. I won't send it if I do. I know it sounds too obsessive
probably. :) But I imagine I'm not the only one in
this boat.I'm at a normal weight - 5'5", 125... not feeling fat
really - just I don't know, it's like I need to be "told" what to do on
this... Thanks! Sat Nam!
It's wonderful to hear that you are on the Kundalini Yoga
teaching path! Re: Yogic Diet: there are no rules! We are all so
highly individual, from individual constitution to our personal
frequency. What was right for Yoga Bhajan, or anyone else for that matter,
may be all wrong for you! We don't eat Yoga Bhajan's diet either, and feel
that we would most likely experience many of the symptoms you describe if
we did!
We feel the Kundalini Yoga diet prescribed by Yoga Bhajan is
wonderful for someone who is moving to a vegetarian diet from the typical
American one. YB's diet has lots of starchs, oils and spices, so that
someone can transition without missing their meat, salt, sugar, fried,
starchy, and other rajastic (stimulating) foods they are used to. If
you feel great on the raw food diet, or the modified raw diet, which
you describe, then, by all means, carry on with that diet!
I (Ana)
eat a mostly raw diet and agree that the energy one gains from an enzyme
and water rich diet is incredible! I feel a raw food diet is the perfect
yogic diet for me because my food digests easily and quickly and my body
and mind stay in a light energized state perfect for yoga and
meditation.
Feel confident in creating your own "yogic diet."
Each of us is an artist and our lives and health are works in progress.
Your masterpiece is what constitutes balance for you! You will have
occasion to create many masterpieces throughout your life, in every area
of your life. Being on a spiritual path means to walk the tightrope
between "the rules," (previously established guidelines) and what your
consciousness dictates, based on your particulars. Kundalini Yoga is the
Yoga of Awareness, so use your awareness to follow up on what you feel is
right for you, and you can't go wrong!
Keep us posted as your diet
and teaching evolve! We wish you a joyful, fun, and love filled New
Year!
Vegan Boundary Issue
Hi Ana & Ravi ! I thought I saw somewhere that you and Ravi are working on a book? If so I really look forward to it. Also, is there anywhere that you discuss nutrition? I know that you have been following a raw food diet. Myself I am switching to vegan...but also no wheat. :( I find it exhausting because not only do I have all of my own learning to do, but I'm tired of everyone immediately questioning me and wanting me to give them a step by step nutritional lowdown on why I'm doing it. Frustrating. I don't ask people to explain to me why they're stuffing on bloody cow meat or eating a twinky. lol Anyway, looking forward to any new works that you do put out. :)
Thanks for writing and congratulations on your positive lifestyle changes! :) For good health and "good karma," a vegan diet is ideal! The questions one usually hears re: a vegan diet, are how to get enough protein and how not to overdo carbs and sweets. I (Ana) don't really define myself as a raw foodist. It has taken years of experimentation with different diets to find the one that makes me feel best. My diet is perfect for my active lifestyle and is very alkaline, water and enzyme rich! It digests easily and quickly and leaves me feeling light and energetic so that I am always ready for yoga and meditation. The only cooked food I regularly eat is steamed vegetables. We do discuss nutrition in our forthcoming book, which should be ready this Spring.
Re: "...I'm tired of everyone immediately questioning me and wanting me to give them a step by step nutritional lowdown..." LOL! So funny. So true! But another way to look at this is by remembering the adage: if you want to master something teach it! Some people are born into Destiny, and some people have Destiny thrust upon them. By that we mean that it's a blessing to help people expand their consciousness and learn to make healthier choices. We seem to be at a pivotal point in our human and planetary evolution and there is a great desire among people to live healthier and happier lives. All of us who have been attempting to live conscious lives are at the vanguard of this movement. We encourage you to not only to continue to deliver yourself to a healthier lifestyle, but to inspire as many people as you can along the way! Please keep us posted!

Meditation of the Month - Doei Shiva Kriya
This powerful meditation is designed to open the Third Eye. The Third Eye, or Eye of Shiva, gives us the ability to penetrate through the layers of mind and to perceive with crystal clarity. The amplitude of the puslation of the pituitary gland, which is the physical counterpart to the Third Eye, is Awareness itself. Kundalini is known as the Yoga of Awareness.
Sit on your heels and raise your arms to a sixty degree angle with the hands bent at the wrists and the palms parallel to the ceiling. Focus up and in towards the brow. Inhale in 16 strokes and exhale in 16, all through the nose. Continue for 3 - 11 min. To end inhale deeply, relax the breath, and with your hands in your lap, focus at the brow and breath long and light. Go deep and experience your True Self!
