NEWS & NOTES
A
glorious June to all of you! The theme for this month's newsletter is
Getting Unstuck. Life has a way of backing us into a corner when our
responsibilities and routines overshadow the possibility of the new.
Sometimes drastic measures are called for. Sometimes it's the little
things that lead to big breakthroughs. Let your consciousness be your
guide! It's very often the case that you're ready for the Next Thing
before circumstances come around. It's often discomfiting when life
doesn't seem to be cooperating. If you feel that way, our advice to you
is to get your affairs in order, because change is coming soon! See our
Top Ten List and Meditation of the Month for ideas and inspiration!

Teacher Trainings
The wheels are slowly turning (and picking up speed) towards the organization of a number of Teacher Training at various places in the US (and hopefully Europe soon). We would like to have a number of "hubs," across the country where we teach ongoing courses. Are you affiliated with a yoga studio near a major airport and would like to help organize a Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training in your area? If so, please respond to this newsletter and let's talk!
We believe that we're all Teachers to one another and that each of us has gifts which make us unique in our ability to heal, uplift, and inspire. We also believe that Kundalini Yoga is the perfect practice for this time and space and can and does transform the lives of everyone who practices it. It is one of the most powerful and beautiful gifts you can share with people.
Ravi-isms #1
There
have been countless "Ravi-isms," over the years. You've heard some on

Top 10 Ways to Get Unstuck
1. Work your Navel Chakra. Navel Power is indispensable when we are trying to put the brakes on a mode of living which doesn't work in favor of one that does. It also gives us the resolve and energy we need to break through to the new! Aim high! Visualize undreamt of outcomes. Give your intention a vision to rally around.
2. Vary your routine. Get in the habit of doing at least one thing different each day. Travel if possible. Having new experiences and new input as well as temporary anonymity can provide impetus for a new you.
3. Move your body in ways you are not accustomed to. Dance! When you move your energy your life can move in new and surprising ways!
4. Travel light through life! Be ruthless and get
rid of all the stuff you just don't need anymore. This will create a
"psychic vacuum" for new experiences to fill.
5. Cultivate a new personna which is the best of you magnified. Getting unstuck doesn't mean you have to be someone else. Usually when people get stuck they are trying to be someone they're not. Give your self permission to be fully who you are and shine!
6. Create an inventory of the steps necessary towards fulfillment.Write down what you need to do and check off each accomplismment once its done!
7. Associate with people who inspire you, or who are already doing what you want to accomplish. Also, surround yourself with people who really believe in you.
8. Raise your frequency! Do Kundalini Yoga & meditation every day. These gifts are tools we can use to determine our own outcomes. When your inside changes, your outside follows. See the Meditation of Month section for two of the most powerful meditations for change in Kundalini Yoga.
9. Practice expressing yourself via the various chakras. Invariably when we're stuck we've gotten mired in the first chakra. There are rich and varied modes of being beyond the same old same old. Practice being them!
10. Don't stress about being stuck.
Its part of life. It often feels like we are stuck while a new us is
gestating deep inside. Get ready for the next round of adventures!

Getting Unstuck
I love your videos and am so inspired by your energy
and devotion to daily yoga practice. Lately, I've been getting wrapped up
in the state of the economy and all of the 'stories we tell ourselves'.
I'm generally pretty good about staying in the present moment but all of
this chaos has me worrying.
This said, I'm like a deer in headlights and I feel STUCK! Coincidentally,
my hips are tight and my sinuses are going crazy... Is there a special meditation
or exercise I can do to 'free myself' up a bit? I notice that the energy
warm-ups at the beginning of your DVDs seem to help. Thanks!
Thanks for
writing and for your kind words. We're sorry to hear that you're experiencing
some stress and worry lately. We recommend working the lower chakras which
relate to the security issues you mentioned. Also, there is a tie-in between hips and sinuses. Sometimes when the hips release you will actually feel your sinuses drain.
We recommend: Yoga for Beginners & Beyond: Stretch, Strengthen, Be Stress Free!, and Yoga Bliss Hips as well as A Journey thru the Chakras, and Navel Power.
Work on the Navel Chakra is very important whenever we are trying to change. It's gives us the will to keep our intention strong and helps us stay positive and on track. Navel Power helps us to take a stand against the negative habits of the past.
Sometimes, when we feel we're stuck, it's actually a gestation period for new breakthroughs. Everything has its polarity, so when nothing is happening, lots will be happening soon. Organize and prepare and keep you Kundalini Yoga practice strong! Also see this month's Meditation of the Month section which features the top "Getting Unstuck" Meditations in Kundalini Yoga as well as our Top Ten Tips for getting unstuck above. We wish you joy, health, and blessings.
Yoga for Older People
I have a few questions for you regarding modification of yoga poses for
my mother, Victoria. She is 73 y.o, relatively healthy. Her major issues
are: a somewhat elevated blood pressure and moderate arthritis in her back
and knees. She is quite flexible for her age because she's been doing a series
of stretching exercises every day. She is also heavier than she should be
and does not like dieting very much.
We do eat healthier than many American families but food is a comfort
for her and she cannot give up many of the items she should not be eating
(sweets, pastry). Since I have many of your DVDs she sees me doing the exercises
but cannot join me because she cannot seat in the easy pose, nor on her knees
(as in rock pose). But it seems that many of the breathing exercises could
be done seating in the chair, no? She would love to have some exercises for
glandular tune up and liver cleanse, and also addressing the high blood pressure
issues.
I did not see anything that is aimed for older people that cannot do "regular"
form of yoga poses. Have you ever though about targeting this population?
Exercises that can be done standing or seating in a chair, or lying down
avoiding easy pose or anything that puts pressure on the knees? Do you have
any recommendations? Thank you for your time.
Thanks for
writing. It is wonderful that you are introducing your mother to Kundalini
Yoga! Do you have our new Yoga for Beginners & Beyond: Stretch, Strengthen, Be Stress Free! That has many standing poses and also includes a seated
segment which would be perfect for her to start with. There is even a Chair Exercise segment as part of the bonus material on that title. Also the first set of our Kundalini Yoga for Beginners & Beyond can be done sitting on the edge of a chair. In addition, the Headache Helper and many other segments on Yoga Quick Fixes and Yoga House Call features many doable and effective exercises we're sure your mom can do easily and will appreciate. Also, much of the entire second half of Yoga Cleanse can be done sitting in a chair.
All of these DVD's provide a wonderful glandular tune-up, and immune
system boost and we think all the breathing will be wonderful for her. We wish you and your mom joy, health, and blessings!
Chakra Basics
hey Ana and
Ravi! I wondered if it was possible for u to explain more about the Chakras
and their significance. I am pretty confused about this, what does it mean
a chakra is low or high? how does this work? I'd love to learn more about
this ;)
Great question! The charka system can seem complicated at first ,but its actually a way of getting into the complicated issues of our lives in a very simple way. We're
working on a Kundalini Yoga book which should be ready soon and will include
descriptions of the chakras. Also, our Journey thru the Chakras
DVD has an explanation of the chakras.
The chakras system represents the complete spectrum of the human experience. Chakras are energy distribution centers
along the spine corresponding to important glands, or nerve plexi. These energy vortexes are located
at the base of the spine, pelvic area, navel, sternum, throat, top of the
head, and above. Each of the chakras relates to an aspect of our lives. The
first 3 chakras, starting at the base of the spine, are called the "lower
chakras," and the others are called the "higher chakras." Even though the lower
chakras relate to our biological aspects, and the higher chakras relate to
our spiritual aspects, no chakra is less important than any other. If the
lower chakras are blocked then a person will have trouble being in reality.
If the higher chakras are blocked, a person will be missing out on important
levels of fulfillment in their lives. The lower and higher chakras need to be in balance with each other for our lives to be in balance. When you practice a Kundalini Yoga set, all of the chakras are automatically brought into balance.
It is helpful to know what aspects and attributes the chakras relate to, because this knowledge can be helpful in pinpointing the blocks or blindspots in our lives. We feel the best approach is to work from the inside out (feeling work) and outside in (Kundalini Yoga and Meditation) at the same time. With that approach you can't go wrong!
Rise & Spine
Hello Ana and Ravi, I love your facebook page, and also your
updated website, particularly the section related to health :-) I love, and
have, all of your DVDs, and love the look, music and content of your newest
ones. It's really refreshing and tough too!
I have a specific question:
I am surprised that you rarely mention the Spine & Rise segment of your
Kundalini Yoga for Beginners and Beyond. I saw several times comments regarding
the 5 Tibetan Rites segment, which is great, but the Spine & Rise is
really good too, and it makes me feel lighter after I've done it. Is there
a reason why you don't talk a lot about this segment? What are the general
benefits of it?
Thanks for writing. You are right, it definitely deserves talking about! The Rise & Spine set which is on our Kundalini Yoga for Beginners & Beyond DVD is called the Basic Spinal Series and was the first thing that Yogi Bhajan taught in 1969 when he made the momentous decision to teach Kundalini Yoga publicly in the West. At that time Kundalini Yoga was considered to be a secret science and only select students of very exclusive Teachers were taught these techniques. Yogi Bhajan felt that nothing less than Kundalini Yoga would do, for the students who were coming to learn from him (many of whom were using drugs). He felt that a powerful technology was needed to help people heal their nervous systems, de-tox, and keep their energy and mental outlook in a good place. All of these reasons are no less true today!
Yogi Bhajan emphasized that we are as flexible as our spines are flexible, and as young, in effect, as our spines are flexible. The spine is the housing for the central nervous system, and the main support beam of our bodies. The Basic Spinal Series opens and balances the chakras, tonifies the nervous system, and moves energy through the spine. The central energetic pathway of the spine is known as the shushuma. According to yoga, when the shushuma is stimulated, spontaneous healing can readily occur. The exercise known as Sat Kriya, in Rise & Spine, is an amazing glandular tune-up, chakra opener, and mood uplift. Rise & Spine seems very simple, but it works on absolutely everything!
Christian Yoga
I am a Christian and many people I have talked to in my community say that in yoga they worship a different God than in my faith. What God am I praying to when I do Kundalini Yoga. Also, is it okay to teach people who are Christians yoga?
Thanks for writing and congratulations on beginning your Kundalini Yoga
practice! First and foremost, please note that yoga is not a religion. That being said, the ultimate goal of all yoga systems is to help people become
God conscious but that is allowed to happen organically. There is no mandatory
belief system for the practice of Kundalini Yoga. You don't even have to believe in God at all! "God," can be defined in many ways and hopefully that will be based on your own direct inner experience.
Of course, it is fine to use your Kundalini Practice for physical and mental fitness, health, and well being! Kundalini Yoga is a tool
which is designed to be used by people to help them be fit, healthy, and happy.
It can also help a person deepen their experience of their religion, art, relationships,
and life overall.
Many traditions define things in different ways, but the
closer you get to the essence of those teachings, the more they are all the
same. The most important thing, we feel, is to not let definiitions create
divisions among people. We feel that the purpose of all religions should be to provide the tools to ease human suffering and make the world a better place. Some people feel that God set the Universe in motion and let the play unfold. If that's true then it's up to those of us who have some awareness to do what we can to help other people be aware.
It would be great if you followed up on your interest
in becoming a Yoga Teacher. We are sure that you will be able to help many
people improve their lives. If you are ever inspired to teach Kundalini Yoga
to the Christian community, that would be really great. In
Kundalini Yoga we use the Universal mantra Sat Nam, which means True
Identity. It can also be said to mean Truth is God's Name. If people in the Christian community are uncomfortable using a mantra in a language they're not familiar with, they can substitute the words "Lord Jesus." Please let us know if you have additional questions.

MEDITATION OF THE MONTH Ganpati Kriya
This is one of the top meditations in Kundalini Yoga to make dramatic breakthroughs when you feel stuck, or feel that life has backed you into a corner. It uses the mantra: Sa-Ta-Na-Ma-Ra-Ma-Da-Sa-Sa-Say-So-Hung. As you chant this, press your thumbtips and your index, middle, ring, and little fingertips progressively. In the course of this 12 syallable mantra, you'll be playing your fingers three times. Continue for 11 - 31 min. Your eyes are 1/10 open looking down and in towards the tip of the nose. You can use any melody with this mantra (which means: Existence, Life, Death, Rebirth, Sun, Moon, Earth, Infinity, I Am That Infinity I Belong To and Contain.) To end inhale stretch your arms up and tightening every muscle, stretch your body (still in a crosslegged position) every which way. Relax the breath and sit in silence for a minute.
This powerful meditation is named after Ganesha, the elephant-headed god in the Hindu pantheon. Ganesha is a symbol for stability and prosperity. He is always depicted with a mouse on his back which symbolizes the ability to get into inaccessible places and out of situations in which you feel there's no escape. This mantra is for healing, balance, creatvity, harmony, and flow.
