Announcing the St. Louis Mental Health Board Newsletter!
The Mental Health Board believes a newsletter is a great way to provide interesting and useful information to our audience. We will use this newsletter keep you up-to-date on our activities, as well as new opportunities that arise. Each issue will focus on three key areas of our work: Activities, News and Announcements, and a Spotlight on one of our programs or projects. Our intent is to publish an issue every other month. However, we will only put out an edition if there is relevant and timely information to share.

FY 2008 Investment Awards Ceremony |

The St. Louis Mental Health Board held our 2007 grant awards ceremony at the Norman K. Probstein Club House in Forest Park on July 31, 2007. A total of 43 grants were awarded in the areas of After School Programs, Capital Improvements and Community Mental Health Services. The Mistress of Ceremony was Ms. Bonita Cornute, News Reporter for FOX 2/KTVI.
Special remarks were given by Bill Siedhoff, Director of City Department of Human Services on behalf of The Honorable Mayor Francis G. Slay. Additional speakers included The Honorable Comptroller Darlene Green and the Honorable Aldermanic Board President Lewis Reed.
A testimonial was given by Tina Leatherbury. She told her story of hope and recovery that was made possible by MHB's investment in the Hopewell Center's program for co-occurring disorders.
A special performance was given by children who have participated in Stray Dog Theatre's summer camp program which incorporates arts and learning. For more details, see our Spotlight section on page 1.
Don Cuvo, MHB Executive Director, and various board members presented awards for recognition in the following areas; Advocacy, Lifetime Achievement, Media, Partnering, Vanguard and Board President. Recipients of each of these awards will be spotlighted in our upcoming issues.
Additionally, the Mental Health Board continues to invest in 46 Community Children's Services projects. |
Three New Trustees Appointed |

The St. Louis Mental Health Board welcomes our three most recently appointed trustees, pictured in the order listed below.
Jason Spaetti is the Program Development Specialist for MERS/Goodwill Industries. He has a Master of Public Administration degree with a concentration in Nonprofit Organizations. As well as his position on the Mental Health Board, Jason is also the Board Chair for Gateway EITC Community Coalition, and is affiliated with Help Desk International and River City Professionals. Jason resides in the Dutchtown Neighborhood of South St. Louis
Robert Franken is the Managing Director of Strataventure, LLC. Robert has been an ordained Episcopal Deacon for the past 25 years. Mr. Franken and his wife live in the DeBalievere Place Neighborhood of St. Louis.
Edwin Dodson, M.D. holds the following positions at Washington University in St. Louis: Associate Vice Chancellor and Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education, Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology. Dr. Dodson is a resident of St. Louis' Central West End Neighborhood. |

Spotlight on Innovations |

Stray Dog Theatre was one of four organizations presented with MHB's Vanguard Award for Innovations.
Stray Dog Theatre received this award because of their unique blend of theater, education and community. MHB has found their community outreach efforts which combine the arts and education to be a unique innovation.

MHB Recognitions |
Recently MHB was presented with awards by Vision for Children at Risk, St. Louis for Kids and Gateway for Giving. Each award recognized MHBs commitment to the residents of the City of St. Louis.

The St. Louis Mental Health Board received a 2007 Children's Champion Award from the nonprofit organization Vision for Children at Risk for outstanding efforts on behalf of children in the St. Louis area. The award was presented Nov. 15 during the St. Louis Metropolitan Children's Summit.
Presented in the category of government leadership, the award recognizes the Mental Health Board for providing funding and leadership to help address the crisis in the St. Louis Public Schools, and for supporting children's initiatives through the Children's Services Fund tax in the city of St. Louis.

The Lights on After School Award was presented to the St. Louis Mental Health Board by St. Louis For Kids. This award honored MHBs efforts toward successfully passing a tax in the City to create the St. Louis Children's Services Plan. A key component was promoting positive youth development through afterschool programs, supervised recreation and providing employment skills and job opportunities. In 2007 the Mental Health Board has invested in the provider community along with the St. Louis Public School to invest more than $1,000,000 to create 10 new programs serving 500 children. The Mental Health Board is a key partner in the Afterschool for All Partnership.

St. Louis Mental Health Board was one of nine funders recognized by Gateway for Giving at their Annual Meeting. A plaque was awarded to Epworth Children and Family Service, the service agency implementing a special program supporting children aging out of foster care. The award recognized the cooperation between local foundations any funders.
