November/December 2008 Ideas & Tips

An unexpected piece of publicity has given business a boost recently. A customer who purchased a small painting of her dog was actually a writer for the Wall Street Journal who had been attracted to our website while doing a piece on digital art. It ran in the Style & Home section on October 16th. Here's the link if you'd like to see how we did: WSJ Article

To welcome our new website visitors, (to encourage them to order more!), and to help our previous loyal customers get a good discount on holiday gifts, starting today, enter the code WSJ at checkout and get 15% off your new orders. This discount is good through Thanksgiving weekend, ending Sunday, November 30th.

Loved Oreo, the sofa not so much...

A new customer who came to us by way of the Wall Street Journal article (which featured pet art) was Larry Noe, who said of this sheepdog, "Oreo was a family pet for 13 years and she recently passed away. This photo was my favorite of her and I wanted to have a painting as a remembrance of her for the entire family."

Larry asked if we could lose the sofa and put Oreo in a different setting. I borrowed a nice backyard setting and worked on placing Oreo into the grass in a believable way. After we were able to accomplish what he wanted, Larry ordered 5 paintings, enough for the whole family.

Art for the Ronald McDonald House Legacy Fund
  Ronald McDonald Art
How should this special donor recognition display be showcased? The goal of this commission was to create art suitable for the main room of the Ronald McDonald House that complimented the yet-to-be-designed display. I suggested a series of five colorful square paintings featuring close-ups of children derived from a bronze sculpture in front of the house.

Our proposed design placed the names in white lettering on a clear sheet of plexiglas mounted off the wall below the art. The letters were more visible because of a brushed metallic sheet on the wall behind the plexiglas. The metallic color ties in with the tones in the paintings.

Here kitty kitty kitty....
  Tigers
Lou Dorfman from Texas is an animal behaviorist who also came to us by way of the Wall Street Journal piece. The article was on pet art, and true to the reputation of Texas, his kitty cats are a little bigger than most. He uploaded a shot of himself with three beautiful tigers from the International Exotic Animal Sanctuary in Boyd, Texas. He has done many television and radio shows as a representative of the wildlife community, speaking as an expert on the personalities and characteristics of wild predators.

I saw a chance to improve his original photograph by removing the cage fencing from the background and replacing it with a natural habitat from a photograph my son took last year while on an African safari. The result was met with approval from Lou, he ordered additional paintings, including two of a different tiger recently adopted by Nascar champion Tony Stewart.
