Pet Safety and Lockboxes
Summertime is when everyone enjoys playing, relaxing, and entertaining outside, especially with our pets. However, there are certain safety issues that must be considered when our pets are outside and the temperature reaches for the triple digits.
As we begin travel season and approach 4th of July weekend, here are some tips to keep your pets safe in the summer heat either at home or on vacation with you:
- Do not leave your pet in a parked car unattended, even if it's only for a few minutes! The temperature inside the car can rise very quickly (reaching 120 F in as little as 10 minutes), especially if the car is in the sun and there is high humidity.
- Do not take your pet with you to see 4th of July fireworks. A dog's hearing is more acute than a human's and some animals become nervous and try to run away from the sound.
- Use flea and tick treatments recommended by your veterinarian. Fleas and ticks are huge summertime threats, in addition to mosquitoes.
- If you are at the beach, be sure to let your dog go for a swim every hour or so to keep him cool.
- When outside, keep your pet in a shaded, cool, and well-ventilated area during the hot hours of the day. Dogs can get sunburn, so be sure to use pet-friendly sunscreen!
Along with safety and care for your pets, it is equally important to take proper care of your lockboxes and keys before you leave for vacation this summer. Malfunctions with lockboxes, locks, and keys are only a couple of elements that can affect the quality of care your pets receive while you're away. Last month we had a number of incidents where clients did not leave their lockboxes out for their pet sitters and we could not take care of their pets as scheduled. Our top priority is making sure your pets receive the care they need while you're away, so do your part and remember your lockboxes and keys!
Here are some other tips to keep your home and your pets safe while you're away this summer:
- Double-check your keys to make sure they work before the onset of service.
- Confirm your listed Emergency Contacts are up to date and at least one person has access to your home.
- Notify our office if you recently changed your locks and provide new keys for your pet sitter before the start of service.
- If you haven't done service with us in a while, check to make sure we have accurate information regarding keys, locks, and codes.
- Consider purchasing a lockbox if you haven't done so already. We offer lockboxes for a $35 refundable deposit or you are welcome to purchase one on your own.
- Finally, be sure to make your reservations for 4th of July weekend! We expect to be very busy that weekend and ask that you give as much notice as possible before scheduling service so we may better accommodate your pet sitting needs.
We want your pets to stay happy and healthy while you enjoy your summer vacation this year. Thank you for your continued business and the opportunity to care for your animals-we hope you have a wonderful summer!

Things to Learn from a Dog

- Allow the experience of fresh air and wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
- Take naps, and stretch before rising.
- Run, romp, and play daily
- When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
- Be loyal.
- Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride, even if just for a short trip.
- When it's in your best interest, practice obedience.
- Never pretend to be something you're not.
- When someone is having a bad day, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
