Meet One of LA's Youngest Kosher Restaurant Inspectors, Find Out Where to Keep it Best

day in the life of a kosher inspector

In the video above, The Feast meets one of LA's youngest Kosher restaurant inspectors (the proper term is mashgiach, which means supervisor in Hebrew). Rabbi Ariel Benzaquen-whose father made The Coffee Bean kosher-works at upscale eatery La Seine on LaCienega, and doubles as a line-cook alongside Executive Chef Alex Reznik. As part of his job, Benzaquen goes through everything from fruits and veggies, to sushi and bone marrow, inspecting every morsel of food before it's prepared and sent out to diners. He also has to be there to relight the pilot lights if they go out ("they have to be lit by a Jew") and to make sure there are no bugs (not kosher) in the produce.

Kosher foods, for the uninitiated, are those that conform to the regulations of the Jewish Halakhic law framework. A few hard and fast rules: No pork (aka no cloven-hooved beasts of the earth), no shell fish (needs to have fins/scales to be kosher), and no mixing of dairy and meat.
