Purim and LA Marathon Information Dear Friends,
During this joyous Purim, I want to wish you and your family a wonderful holiday.
I would like to bring your attention to some possible complications regarding transportation and traffic this upcoming Purim. As you may be aware, the 26th Annual Los Angeles Marathon is coming up on Sunday, March 20. It will once again be a point-to-point route starting at Dodger Stadium and finishing at the beach in Santa Monica. The course travels through Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood Boulevard, the Sunset Strip, West Hollywood, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and finishes on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica.
This year, the event happens to coincide with Purim. There will be a rolling closure throughout the race,
allowing streets to reopen after the runners have passed.
The LA Marathon staff predicts that the intersection of Sunset Blvd. and La Brea Ave. will reopen around 12 noon, followed by the intersections of Sunset Blvd and Fairfax Ave. around 12:15pm, Santa Monica Blvd.
and Robertson Blvd. around 1:00pm, Santa Monica Blvd. and Century Park West around 1:30pm and Santa Monica Blvd. and Sepulveda Blvd. around 2:05pm.
(Complete map of road closures can be found atlamarathon.com).
The mitzvot of giving Mishloach Manot and Matanot L'evyonim are essential components to observing the days of Purim. While I understand the simultaneous timing of the Marathon might cause some confusion, I urge you to make necessary arrangements to curtail the effects this might cause on your plans. My office has been in touch with the LA Marathon community relations staff and they have assured us that they will do everything they can to help you navigate through race day. Please feel free to contact Ginger Williams, the Director of Community Relations for the LA Marathon,
at (213) 542-3000 or my office at (213) 473-7005 for any questions or comments.
Thank you. Happy Purim!
Sincerely, PAUL KORETZ Los Angeles City Councilmember, 5th District |
