New Report on Children with Special Health Care Needs in Context
Children with Special Health Care Needs in Context: A Portrait of States and the Nation 2007, a new report recently released by the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau, provides an enhanced view of children with special health care needs (CSHCN) by illustrating their health, health care, home and family environments, and school and neighborhood environments compared to their peers without special health care needs. The national and state level findings in this report are based on the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH). The following highlights are included:
CSHCN are more likely to have consistent health insurance coverage, but this insurance is less adequate to meet their greater health care needs compared to children without special health care needs.
Only 23% of CSHCN live in protective home environments compared to 30% of children without special health care needs. A protective home environment includes factors such as eating meals together, limited television watching and whether or not a child is exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke in the home.
How do CSHCN compare to those without special health care needs in your state? Find out today by visiting the DRC State Snapshots Web page and selecting the "Disparities in Child Health Across Populations" drop down menu.
