Sorry The News Letter Is Late

Boyce HinmanNormally we issue our monthly news letter in the first week of each month. However, as recently noted, we are in the midst of changing our system to allow our members to send Faxes to their legislators.

This has required major changes to the software we use and has made it necessary for me to learn a whole new way of doing things. It has been a labor intensive process. As a result, it was not possible to get this news letter out at the usual time.

At any rate, I hope you find it interesting and useful. Next month our news letter will be on time.

The Irony of Marriage

Gay Men Wedding Ring

All across the country it seems the LGBT community, and the forces of conservative Christianity, are locked in a titanic battle over just who can and cannot marry.

Every time a state law is passed allowing same sex marriage, or a court order allows it, the conservative Christians put an initiative on the state ballot to again ban same sex marriage.

Proposition 8 was one such initiative and it is now working its way up the US appeals court ladder. Both sides say they will fight the issue all the way to the US Supreme Court, if necessary.

And yet, to growing numbers of Americans, marriage is yesterday's news. So, does it really matter?

Court Expands Rights For Unmarried Same Sex Couples

Fresno Ad

In an important court decision, the California Appeals court granted marriage like rights to same sex couples who were neither married or registered domestic partners. This is a major advance for the rights of same sex coupes.

Ever since the year 2000 the California Legislature, and various courts have been building a body of law that grants many of the rights of marriage to same sex married couples and to domestic partners. Even the federal government has recognized same sex marriages and domestic partnerships in certain circumstances.

However, until now, their has been little or no recognition of the rights of committed same sex couples who have neither married or nor registered as domestic partners. The appeals court decision begins to change all that.

Many Lose Unemployment Insurance

UnemployedRecently the California Employment Development Department (EDD) announced that the US Department of labor has notified it that California no longer meets the criteria which allowed unemployed Californians to qualify for the Federally funded FED-ED extended Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits.

As a result, starting on May 12 of this year, those currently receiving weekly checks under the FED-ED program will no longer get them. Many more, who otherwise would have qualified for FED-ED, will no longer qualify. EDD estimates that this change will immediately affect an estimated 93,000 unemployed Californians.

Class Warfare Tea Party Style

Members of the Tea Party, and many Republicans, complain that President Obama and Democrats are trying to divide the country with class warfare.

They say the President's plan to increase taxes on the wealthiest Americans is evidence of that fact.

However, Tea Party Members, and Republicans, have been engaging in their own kind of class warfare. They have been pushing for laws that assume, if people are poor, it's probably their own fault. Probably, among other things, they use illicit drugs.

Currently, 5 states are considering requiring unemployment insurance (UI) applicants to undergo drug tests. (Iowa, Oklahoma, Michigan, South Carolina, North Carolina)

Presumably those who test positive would be denied unemployment insurance. Republicans in the US House of Representatives have introduced similar legislation.

HIV - The Magic Bullet?

AIDS Image

An Advisory Panel to the US Food And Drug Administration (FDA) recently advised that a drug called Truvada should be used in certain healthy people as a preventative for avoiding HIV infection.

The drug is currently approved as a medication for people who are already infected.

The Food and Drug Administration usually follows the advice given to it by panels of outside experts.

Truvada, if taken once daily, shows great promise if used to prevent infection among healthy people. But, No, Truvada is NOT a magic bullet. Therefor, the panel did urge that people at high risk of being infected with HIV continue to use condoms and other safe sex procedures even when taking Truvada.
