Drugs May Lower Risk of HIV Infection

AIDS Image

Two new studies performed on HIV negative heterosexuals in Africa found that, when they took certain medications, their risk of becoming infected with HIV was reduced significantly. HIV infection is widespread among heterosexual men and women in Africa, particularly in southern Africa.

These results mirror those of other recent studies done on men who have sex with men, and among transgender women.

These studies seem to suggest a way to make inroads on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in this country. For that reason, Project Inform, in San Francisco, is urging the federal government to seriously consider using these medications as part of a prevention programs in this country and world wide.

Anti-Abortion Initiative Fails In California

Girl Taking Pregnancy Test

At a time when a woman's right to choose is under attack all across the nation, an anti-abortion initiative has failed to qualify for the ballot in California.

Several times now the opponents of a woman's right to choose have tried to amend California law to require that parents be notified, and give their consent, before any minor can have an abortion. In several attempts, initiatives to impose those restrictions actually made it onto the ballot in California. Each time the voters rejected the initiative.

Half of The Dream Act Signed By The Governor

College Grads

Governor Brown recently signed AB 130 which is one half of what supporters are calling the Dream Act. The other bill is AB131. Both bills were introduced by Assembly Member Gil Cedillo.

AB 130, will allow certain undocumented immigrants to qualify for student aid to help them pay for their education at California's public colleges and universities. The student aid will have to come from private sources, although they are administered by those public colleges and universities.

To qualify for this aid undocumented immigrants would have to meet the following requirements:

1. They must have attended high school in California for at least 3 years.
2. They must have earned a high school diploma or some similar document.
3. They must have submitted a signed document saying they have applied for legal residency in this country, or will do so as soon as they were eligible to do so.

AB 131 is similar to AB 130 but it does have certain key differences from that bill.

A New Way To Do Abortions

Doctor Taking Pulse

According to the National Abortion Federation, there were 24 murders or attempted murders of Abortion doctors between 1989 and 2004, in the United States and Canada. During that same time, there were 170 bombings, attempted bombings or arsons or attempted arsons against abortion clinics.

As a result of facts like the above, fewer and fewer doctors are willing to provide abortion services. However some new technology may make it easier and safer for doctors to provide theses services.

One way of inducing an abortion is to administer the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol. Since 2008 Planned Parenthood clinics in Iowa have been using these medicines to provide abortions in a clinic setting but without the doctor being in the clinic as the service is being provided. A telemedicine process was used to allow a doctor to guide the process without actually being there.

Proposition 8 Revisited

Harvey Milk

The opponents of the LGBTI community are at it again. This time they are trying to overturn a just enacted California law that would educate students about the contributions of LGBT people to California and to the nation.

Recently Governor Brown Signed SB 48. This bill, which would have become effective January 1, 2012, requires schools to teach about the contributions of LGBT people.

However, opponents of the bill are gathering signatures on petitions to put this legislation up for a vote in California. Please do not sign the initiative and urge all your friends to refuse to sign it as well.

The Racial Divide Is Widening

 Latino Family

It has been known for years that African Americans and Latinos earn less than White Non-Hispanic people. But a recent report by the Pew Research Center indicates that the economic gap between these groups is widening significantly.

(Note: You will find a link to a copy of the Pew report at the end of the web based version of this article.)

According to the report, the median wealth of White households is 20 times that of African American households, and 18 times that of Hispanic households.
