ART COMES TO MARENGO

| Starting next week, Marengo students will be getting art classes each week. (First trimester, they had music, and next trimester they will have drama). As you may know, budget cuts last year resulted in the loss of the itinerant art teacher position in our district. However, the elementary school PTAs and SPEF joined together to fill this void with an Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program brought to us by SPACE - the South Pasadena Arts Center.
AIR utilizes local teaching artists to provide a California standards-based, hands-on arts curriculum with integration of other subjects including language arts, math, science, and social studies. The program aims to develop students' artistic perception, skills, and appreciation, inspire creativity and personal expression, and challenge students' critical thinking abilities. During this six-week course kindergarten classes will meet for 45 minutes per week and grades 1 - 5 will each meet for 1.5 hours per week.
As with most art projects, extra hands are always needed. Your room parent will let your classroom know your scheduled time for art. If you are interested in helping and working with and learning from these art professionals in our community, please sign up to volunteer during your classroom time. We really need you!

CULTURAL ARTS ASSEMBLY
| | Brass Pacifica The PTA is proud to present Brass Pacifica on Friday, January 14. Brass Pacifica was founded in 1995 by five accomplished brass instrumentalists from around the Los Angeles area. They will present a roaring, exciting celebration of the family of musical instruments known as "brass". With music that ranges from Mozart to Mancini, these five talented brass soloists use two trumpets, a horn, a trombone and a tuba to showcase and explore brass music.
Our students will be given background information on the instruments and songs as they listen to and enjoy the music. They will also work on heightening listening skills, rhythm techniques and instrument discovery.
Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and one will even have a chance at being a "guest conductor." As always, parents are welcome to come and watch. We will present three shows: 9:00 am - K,1, 10:00 am - 2,3, 11:00 am - 4,5. We look forward to seeing you there! |
UNICEF TOTAL
| | In December, student council officers took the UNICEF Trick-or-Treat collection boxes to a participating Coinstar machine to make our donation. After nearly an hour of depositing change in the machine, we found that Marengo students had collected $1,214.65 for UNICEF. Way to go!

| A WORD FROM OUR PRINCIPAL | |
Dear Marengo Community,
Happy New Year and welcome back from what I hope was a restful break.
Marengo is committed to integrating character education into the curriculum and encouraging families to make choices according to our 'High Five' of Good Character: Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Fairness, Trustworthiness, and Citizenship. Over the past three months, we have been focusing on RESPECT from the Marengo 'High Five' of Good Character! These character traits are taught and reinforced through Second Step, our character education program.
According to the Josephson Institute of Ethics, RESPECT can be defined as, "showing solemn regard for the worth of people, including yourself." Treating people with respect means letting them know that their safety and happiness matter, that they are important and worthy simply because they are fellow human beings. The students and staff at Marengo have been working to follow the seven basic rules of RESPECT:
- Honor the individual worth and dignity of others.
- Show courtesy and civility.
- Honor reasonable social standards and customs.
- Live by the Golden Rule: Treat others as you would want to be treated.
- Accept differences and judge on character and ability.
- Respect the autonomy of others.
- Don't bully; avoid actual or threatened violence.
As Maya Angelou said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
Schools teach children about respect, but parents have the most influence on how respectful children become. Until children show respect at home, it's unlikely they will show it anywhere else.
How can you show respect to your child?
- Be honest - If you do something wrong, admit it and apologize.
- Be positive - Don't embarrass, insult or make fun of your child. Compliment them.
- Be Trusting - Let your child make choices and take responsibility.
- Be fair - Listen to your child's side of the story before reaching a conclusion.
- Be polite - Use "please" and "thank you". Knock before entering your child's room.
- Be reliable - Keep promises. Show your child that you mean what you say.
- Be a good listener - Give your child your full attention.
For the rest of the school year we will be focusing on one character trait per month as follows:
January - Responsibility
February - Trustworthiness
March - Caring
April - Citizenship
May - Review of all.
Thank you for practicing and reinforcing these character traits at home.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

Dear Marengo Families,
January is a time for a reflection and resolutions, not just personally but as a learning community as well. In thinking about what to write for the Pawprint, I turned to one of my favorite posters hanging in the conference room. Entitled, "150 ways to show you care," this runner reminds me of simple and powerful ways to engage with children. So many of these suggestions are not new or difficult but I know they are true in connecting with our students. In reviewing the list, let me mention a few that I want to implement more deliberately in 2011: # 2 Smile a lot. #21 Forget your worries and concentrate only on them. #44 Tell them how terrific they are. #65 Have fun together. #68 Tell them how much you like to be with them. #76 Let them act their age. #94 Nurture them with good food, good words and good fun. #138 Tape record or video tape a message for them. #150 Love them, no matter what. Like other New Year's resolutions, these promises will need refreshing and reminding. But I am going to make the vow to work on these areas and create memories that are meaningful for our Marengo children and myself. Happy New Year Marengo families! A CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

Invitations to this super fun parent party will be coming home with your youngest child this week. Please check your child's backpack and send in your RSVP as soon as possible.
We need your help to make this upcoming fundraiser a smashing success. Make sure you mark your calendars to attend this night out for parents, teachers and staff and also feel free to contribute to the silent auction.
We're looking for donation items such as gift certificates, fine wines, vacation rentals, gift cards, jewelry, airline tickets, gift baskets, sports and theatre tickets, spa and golf outings. Please donate and also contact friends, relatives, associates, and businesses who can contribute. Naturally, cash donations are also welcome to underwrite this fantastic event. SUPER SCIENTIST NIGHT

Wednesday, January 26, 6:00 - 8:00 pmJoin us as we explore the fascinating world of science careers and hobbies presented by Marengo parents willing to share their expertise with our students. This spectacularly cool event could use more spectacularly cool people. If you work in the sciences, or you dabble in amateur astronomy or robotics, for example, and would like to be part of this fun, casual, totally low-stress night, please call Susan Turner-Lowe at 626-818-3985 or email: sturner@huntington.org. Dentists, acupuncturist, massage therapists, horticulturists, marine scientists, physical therapists...we need you! Let's aim to show our students just how much of a blast science can be!

2011 TALENT SHOW - THE SHOW OF SHOWS
| | It is time to start rehearsing for the 2010 Talent Show! Kids who want to spotlight their talents playing an instrument, performing a comedy routine, dancing, singing, reciting poetry, etc. can show us their stuff at the Talent Show auditions on Friday, January 21st (Grades 1, 2, and 3 at 1:15, Grades K, 4, 5 at 3:00).
 A complete list of Talent Show rules are posted on the PTA website. Please refer to them to make sure your child's act will be permitted.
Participation in the Talent Show requires that your child be available for dress rehearsal on Thursday, February 24th at 3:00 and two performances on Friday, February 25th (8:45 am and 7:00 pm).

BULLYING PREVENTION PARENTING SEMINAR

| How to talk to your kids about the bullies, the bullied, and the bystanders February 23, 2011 7:00 pm According to the National Association of School Psychologists, about one in every seven school children has been either a bully or the target of a bully.
The Bullying Prevention Parenting Seminar is a 90-minute program presented by speaker and educational entertainer John Abrams. It's designed to help parents prevent bullying, repel peer pressure, and improve the overall school experience for their children.
Students will participate in a program during the day and the parenting piece will be presented in the evening. Please mark the date in your calendar and look for more information in next month's newsletter.

PTA PRESIDENT'S CORNER

| Happy new year and welcome back! We hope everyone had a wonderful, restful holiday. Speaking of holidays, we want to thank Stacey Petersen and Jessica Yee for organizing this year's Holiday Workshop. They added some new crafts this year and all of the children who participated were able to create adorable handmade gifts for their loved ones.
  Thank you also to all of our generous families who donated gifts for our Hillsides families, and to Aya Hirano for again coordinating this year's gift drive. The Hillsides staff and the families they work with were so appreciative. We'd also like to thank Katie Clark, Kelli Driscoll, and Liz Price for once again bringing us the always-fun week at the Book Fair. Both the Holiday Workshop and the Book Fair would not be possible without the many super parent volunteers who work the events. Your time is very much appreciated! Plan on joining us this Wednesday at 7:00 pm in the auditorium for a special presentation by our own Ms. Smith, and former Marengo teacher Ms. Reichert. They will be talking about how we as parents can improve our students' reading ability and comprehension and also nurture their love of reading. This is always a popular presentation, so if you haven't seen it before, this is your chance! As usual, childcare will be provided for children 2 years and older. Looking ahead farther into January, we have two exciting PTA events coming up. On Friday, January 14, Brass Pacifica will be performing at 9:00, 10:00, and 11:00 am in the auditorium, and parents are always welcome. In this show, you will discover the brass family of instruments, expertly played by five talented and entertaining musicians, as you travel through musical time in an interactive program designed to engage students and bring music to life.
Then on January 26 we have the always popular Careers in Science Night, when our talented Marengo parents show our students what their work is all about. These hands-on, interactive exhibits are both entertaining and educational. We still need more parent scientists to participate, so if you are available please contact Susan Turner-Lowe as soon as possible at sturner@huntington.org. 2011 at Marengo is off to a great start - so glad you are a part of it!
