HOLIDAY WORKSHOP
This long-standing Marengo tradition gives students the opportunity to purchase and make low-cost crafts to give as gifts to family and friends.  This year, craft options include jewelry, candles, scarves, ornaments, mugs, frames, and more.  This event, co-sponsored this year by the PTA and the South Pasadena Chinese American Club is NOT a fundraiser.  It is solely for the benefit of the students, and it cannot happen without the help of our awesome Marengo parents.

Holiday Workshop Snowman

Volunteers are needed for the following shifts:

  • Tuesday, December 14 from 2:00-5:00 (grades K-2)

EARN $ FOR MARENGO WHILE HOLIDAY SHOPPING
There are several different ways you can turn your holiday shopping into extra money for Marengo - without spending an extra dime.

1. If gift cards are part of your holiday shopping, or if you just want to stock up for the year for places you frequent, please turn in your Scrip Special Order Form TODAY to have your cards back before the break.

2. If you shop at amazon.com, please go to marengopta.com first and click on the link.  At least 6% of your purchase is sent back to the school!

3. If you plan to do other online shopping this holiday season, try entering the company website through the eScrip Online Mall, and a percentage of what you spend will be given back to Marengo.  Or, better yet, download the autoearn program from escrip.com and you will be automatically notified if the site you are shopping is part of the program.

4. Shop at the Book Fair this week, and Marengo benefits as well.

5. Continue to turn in Fresh & Easy receipts to the office through the end of the year, and we will turn them in for $1 for every $20 spent!
TALENT SHOW
If you play an instrument, tap dance, sing, if you're a comic genius, a gymnast, a poet, a juggler...start rehearsing!!!

The 2011 Marengo Talent Show is scheduled for February 25th.  Auditions will be held in late January.  Keep a look out for more detailed information in backpack mail.
LOST AND FOUND
Make sure to stop by the Lost & Found racks before Winter Break begins.  Right after school on December 17th, the Lost and Found will be cleared.

Unclaimed items will be sorted and donated to charity.  December 17th is not a good day to leave lunch boxes or jackets at school!  There is no way to know how long an item has been in the Lost & Found, so all items are cleared on that day.

Please remind your child to double-check his or her belongings before leaving school.
BOX TOPS BOX COMPETITION
Mix N Munch Grilled Cheese and Cereal Cafe and the three South Pasadena elementary schools are holding a competition to design collection boxes for Box Tops. The student designing the winning box from each school will get a prize and have their box used to collect Box Tops at Mix N Munch.  Entries should be submitted on paper by December 15th to Mix N Munch or the school office.  For more rules and guidelines, please check backpack mail or contact mixnmunch@gmail.com.

A WORD FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Dear Marengo Community,

This week you will meet with your child's teacher to discuss his or her academic and social growth.   Parent-teacher conferences are a wonderful opportunity to extend lines of communication between home and school, keep you informed about your child's progress and for developing cooperative strategies that can ultimately benefit your child as well as others. As the conference date draws near, remember the meeting is an opportunity for you and your child's teacher to collaborate. Remember that you are the expert about your child, while the teacher is the expert on teaching kids at his/her grade level. You will both come to the table with ideas and opinions. Remember, too, that collaboration sometimes requires compromise; striking a balance of ideas is often in the best interest of your child.  Below are a few ideas that I hope help make the conference a meaningful and beneficial experience.

Before the conference
  • Ask your child how he/she feels about school.
  • Ask your child if there is anything that he/she wants you to talk about with his teacher.
  • Tell your child that you and the teacher are meeting to help him/her.
  • Make a list of topics that you want to talk about with the teacher.
  • Prepare a list of questions such as:
1. What are my child's strongest and weakest subjects?
2. Does my child complete work on time?
3. Does my child participate in class?
4. Does my child seem happy at school?
5. What can I do at home to help?

After the conference
  • Talk about the conference with your child.
  • Talk about the positive points, and be direct about problems.
  • Tell your child about any plans you and the teacher created.
  • Keep in touch with the teacher during the school year.
Parent Conferences are important part of your child's academic and social growth at Marengo.  You play a crucial role in your child's academic success and we appreciate all that you do for your child and Marengo!

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Dear Parents,

Over the years we have discussed and implemented Developmental Assets, the 40 essential building blocks that every child needs as a foundation for healthy maturation.  These skills help children avoid at-risk behaviors and make choices to become responsible, happy, and successful individuals.

Attendance at the parent-teacher conference is one way of building assets for your child. By talking with your child's teacher, a difference is made in your child's life. You are demonstrating that you care in the following ways:
  1. You are telling your child know how much you value education. Many of you are having to rearrange your schedules to talk with your child's teacher. By intimately understanding their passions, their learning style and how they perform at school, you are communicating a family commitment to learning.
  2. You are directly encouraging your child to do well, reach their potential and accept responsibility. Kids want to feel good about their performance and their effort in school. They are excited for you to be a part of their classroom, to be interested in what their teacher might say about them and to see how they are performing. Developing goals with the teacher supports a child's effort to do his or her best.
  3. You encourage a strong sense of self for your child. This conference is a showcase of individual creativity, personality, effort, and time. The skills they practice each day will be used throughout their life. Getting along with different types of people, completing assignments in a timely manner, working in groups, and creatively solving a problem are just some of the ways our children prepare themselves for the future and develop a sense of purpose.
Your attendance at the parent-teacher conference speaks volumes to your child. That twenty or thirty minute session with a teacher is a wonderful opportunity to build your child's self esteem, encourage them in a lifelong passion for learning, and support their efforts. Good for you!

HOLIDAY GIFT TREE
Hillsides Holiday Gift Drive
December 1 - 13
Marengo has a long-standing relationship with Hillsides, a Pasadena non-profit organization that provides a variety of services to families at risk.  Though we have replaced our traditional Holiday Gift Drive with a Thanksgiving Food Drive, we are still coordinating a smaller-scale Holiday Gift Drive for the families of Hillsides.

The Hillsides Gift Drive will be starts today and goes through December 13th.  Tags listing one gift item are available in the school office.  If you are interested, you can choose one or more items to purchase and return your unwrapped gift to school on or before December 13.  Those gifts will then be delivered to families that otherwise would not have holiday gifts.
A NOTE FROM SOUTH PASADENA COUNCIL PTA

Help Stop Bullying, U.S. Tells Educators -- The Department of Education sent a letter to the nation's educators urging them to ensure that they are complying with their responsibilities to prevent harassment, as laid out in federal laws. The letter is the product of a yearlong review of the federal statutes and case law covering sexual, racial and other forms of harassment. To read the October 26, 2010 letter, click here:  http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/letters/colleague-201010.html

Urge Your Representatives to Pass the Child Nutrition Bill  -- National PTA needs your help to encourage the House of Representatives to vote on S. 3307, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, when they return from the November elections. PTA members should reach out to their representatives to urge swift action on this bill in order to enact its many improvements to child nutrition programs into law.  Congressman Adam Schiff (29th District), 35 South Raymond Avenue #205, Pasadena, CA 91105, Phone:  626-304-2727 http://www.southpasadenacouncilpta.org/southpasadenacouncilpta.org/Take_Action.htm

PTA Finds Nothing to C
elebrate in State Budget -- The State Legislature finally passed - and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed - the 2010-11 state budget.  This budget set a record as the latest state budget in California history.  It is clear that no one who cares about the welfare and education of children can be satisfied with this budget.

With this budget, Proposition 98, the minimum funding guarantee for education, is suspended, and schools will receive billions less than otherwise required under the law. And once again, the budget is balanced with little in the way of new revenues, relying instead on spending reductions, anticipated federal funds and accounting gimmicks. After $17 billion in cuts to education the past few years, overall K-12 education funding will remain fairly constant from last year's funding level.  Although this budget provides an increase in funding over the Governor's May Revise proposal of $1.7 billion, or approximately $275 per pupil, all of this money is deferred into the 2011-2012 school year.

 PTA PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Welcome back!  We hope everyone had a wonderful, relaxing Thanksgiving week.

Hopefully you were able to join us on November 7th for our 6th annual Celebrate the Arts Day.  It was a magical day as we got to watch our children spend a day engaged in both artistic expression and scientific exploration.  Planning an event like this takes months, and so many volunteers were involved - too many to name here - but we sincerely appreciate all of the effort and energy that our volunteers brought to the event.  A big thank you goes to our Celebrate the Arts Day chairs Eileen Lee and Abigail Deser who oversaw all of the details of an amazing day. Arts Day Photo  Arts Day PhotoAnd thank you Kelli Driscoll, Lori Biard, and Tina Gavlak for not only coordinating the Reflections program, but also making sure the children that participated had an opportunity to display their work.  It was a treat to see their efforts on display at Arts & Science Day.

Our Thanksgiving food drive was a huge success thanks to the generosity of Marengo families.  Your donations made a real difference in the lives of local families in need, so thank you.  And thank you to our Student Council, who collected the food from all of the classrooms and helped load the truck that delivered the donations.  Food Drive Truck PhotoA special thank you goes out to Aya Hirano for organizing the food drive, and for also organizing our upcoming gift drive.  The gift drive, like the food drive, will benefit families served by the Pasadena-based Hillsides organization.  For some of these families, the gifts we donate are the only gifts their children will receive this holiday, so please consider participating.  Tags listing requested gift items are available in the school office.

Tonight is Pajama Night at the Book Fair.  Please stop by between 6:00 and 8:00 pm, for stories read by teachers in the library and a chance to get a jump on your holiday shopping at the Book Fair in the auditorium.  And speaking of the holidays, our annual Holiday Workshop will be taking place on December 14 and 15.  It is a fun volunteer opportunity to spend an afternoon helping students create gifts for their families and friends.  If you are interested in helping out, please contact Stacey Petersen at smkpetersen@yahoo.com.

Enjoy your December!
