Technology Notes from Mr. SandstromOver the past couple of weeks, I have received numerous phone calls and emails from parents concerned about the amount of time that CrashPlan Plus and Mozy Home are reporting for initial backups to complete.
First and foremost, this is completely normal behavior. The reason is simple math: Large amounts of data (which an initial full backup always is) uploaded over relatively small upload links equals a lot of time required for backups. All residential (Comcast, AT&T, BrightHouse, etc) internet service always sells their service as "Blazing fast downloads..." What they don't tell you is that 20Mb/s download speed normally translates to 4-5Mb/s of upload speed. Backups are uploaded to your backup provider (CrashPlan, Mozy, etc).
I have contacted both CrashPlan AND Mozy. While Mozy stated that their application will "self-adjust", CrashPlan offered these suggestions to speed things along:
Open CrashPlan application. Click on Settings. Next, click on the "Network" tab. There are four (4) fields with drop down's called "Limit sending rate". Change all four of them to 2Mbps.
Rest assured that we will not image student laptops until we know backups are complete and ready to go.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
