unchanging: God's Greatness

Daily Devotions for Feb. 11-15

"Praise the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty. He wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind."  Psalm 104:1-3

MONDAY, Feb. 11

As we begin this new week, let's focus on the unchanging nature of God's greatness. It is not typically up for debate. In fact, the greatness of God is readily embraced by believers. At the same time, though, our culture seems to assign greatness to anything and everything. It is quite possible that the true greatness of God gets lost among all the things we consider to be great. Write down some things you consider to be great.

Perhaps it is a person, a work of art or a performance. Whatever it may be, it truly pales in comparison to the greatness of our God. Take a few minutes now to read Psalm 145. List some characteristics of God's greatness you find in this passage.

How do these verses affirm or change your view of God's greatness?

Pray today that you would be captivated by the greatness of God. As a reminder, take the time to memorize Psalm 145:3

TUESDAY, Feb. 12

Yesterday, you were asked to write down some of the things you consider to be great. It is logical to conclude that we would respond to that which we consider to be great. We seldom witness greatness and fail to respond. We might applaud, stare in awe or even give money or gifts. It is natural to respond to greatness. This is no less true when we witness the greatness of God.

We have taken time to identify characteristics of God's greatness, but today we will look at the response to God's greatness. Read Psalm 96. These verses sound quite similar to what we read in Psalm 145 yesterday, but let's try to gather some insight using a different angle today. According to Psalm 96, who or what is encouraged to respond with praise to God?

What are some of the actions associated with praise?

I am going to ask you to do something a bit different today. Let's not simply read a response to His greatness. Let's do it. Stand up and read Psalm 96 aloud. Sing a song. Write a prayer. Declare His greatness to someone around you. Choose and respond. End your time in prayer thanking God for His exceeding greatness.

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 13

God's greatness is revealed in a number of ways. We find it in scripture, see it in nature and witness it through the lives of people in the Bible. Today we will look at two biblical leaders who declared God's greatness to their people. In Deuteronomy 32, Moses speaks to Israel concerning her turning away from God. Read Deuteronomy 32:1-4. What did Moses proclaim concerning God's greatness?

In 1 Chronicles 29:10-13, David offers a prayer of thanksgiving for the resources given to his son Solomon as he prepares to build the temple. Read David's prayer and write down his proclamations of God's greatness.

Moses found justice in God's greatness. David found provision in God's greatness. How have you experienced God's greatness in your life?

Pray today that God would continue to reveal His greatness to you through every circumstance of life.

THURSDAY, Feb. 14

While many biblical characters reveal God's greatness, none compare to Jesus. In Christ, the greatness of God is most fully seen. In Philippians 2, we see Jesus--fully God become God--fully man. If we want to view the greatness of God, we look to His son. I think Hebrews 1 is one of the most breathtaking chapters in scripture. Take a moment to read it now. What does verse 3 say about Jesus' representation of God?

What other insights do you draw from this passage?

How do these words help you see Jesus in a different light?

Pray now that God would reveal His greatness as you walk with Jesus each day.

FRIDAY, Feb. 15

"Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom."
Psalm 145:3

We began our week by memorizing this proclamation of God's greatness. It is true. No one can fathom the uncontainable, unchangeable greatness of our God. Even though we will never fully get our minds around God's greatness, we must not stop seeking knowledge and understanding. Read Proverbs 2:1-6. What promises do we find in these verses?

God desires to reveal Himself to us as we diligently seek Him. I pray your time in God's Word this week has yielded new insight and understanding of who He is. Take some time to reflect on your week. How has God's greatness become more real to you?

What insights or encouragement have you received from His Word this week?

God is great! It should be our prayer to live our lives in light of His greatness. May His power and presence attend us as we give him honor and praise. As you pray today, ask God to continually reveal His greatness to you and prepare your heart to hear from His Word this Sunday.
