Flying Fox
September 2008
Newsletter
Flying FoxThe summer has gone so quickly it is hard to believe it is September already.  But harvest is almost here.  Our current plans are to bring in the Viognier around September 20th and the Merlot soon after that.  The Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc will hopefully keep ripening into October.  Keep your fingers crossed for warm sunny days this fall.  Here is a photo from last year's Viognier harvest at Ridge Run Vineyard in Stuarts Draft.  Thanks to Karen and everyone else who helped Jane & Jon Zieman bring in those great grapes.  We are looking forward to having a good supply of the 2008 vintage Viognier.

We can now ship wine within the state of Virginia.  If you can't get to the tasting room in Afton, give us a call or email and we can send your favorite Flying Fox wine directly to your door. Contact information is at end of this newsletter.

We are currently open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 11:00-6:00pm, and every day in October.  Sold the last ofwinery building the 2007 Rosé last Wednesday at the Waynesboro Farmer's Market, but we are now pouring our 2006 reds.   The 2006 Petit Verdot is a dark, concentrated, velvety red wine.  Our 2006 Trio is a harmonious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.  The 2006 Fox Red is a smooth, rich, slightly sweet blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.  My current favorite is the Petit Verdot (since the Rosé is gone....).  On the lighter side, we still have a good supply of the 2005 Cabernet Franc. And the elegant, refined 2005 Merlot is tasting better and better.  While the cooler temperatures seem to shift our preferences to the red side, we do still have white wines available.  The 2007 Chardonnay and 2007 Viognier are chilled and waiting for you.  And don't forget the White Table Wine when you are craving something sweeter.

We will be pouring wine at two festivals this fall - on the same weekend!  On Saturday, October 12th,  Flying Fox will be at the River City Wine Festival in Waynesboro.  On Saturday and Sunday, October 12 & 13th we will be at the Crozet Arts & Crafts Fair, in Crozet. We hope to see you at the tasting room or at one of these events.

Most Saturdays, we are also at the Farmer's Market in Staunton.  No tasting allowed there, but you can pick up a bottle of your favorite Flying Fox wine (perhaps the '05 Merlot or Cabernet Franc) to go with the local produce, cheese, bread, flowers etc. available at the market.  One stop shopping!
Flying FoxWe are delighted to announce that we have a new guest artist exhibiting in the tasting room, beginning on September 13th.  Kelly Lonergan is currently Chairman of the Art Department at Woodbury Forest School.  The title of his show is:

"all these people that you mention...."

Kelly sent us this description.   "This is a show of recent small paintings all based on quick drawings of human figures done in small sketchbooks. Collectively, they may be thought of as a whimsical or comical reverie on the human condition; yet, the figures and the settings they occupy strive to comment more deeply on the individual's search for identity and meaning in an alien world.  Formally, the imagery emerges through the integration of stain, marks, impasto, and patterns."

Biographical Sketch of the Artist:

Received MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond in 1991. Taught Art History at Germanna Community College and Piedmont VA Community College in the mid-1990s before becoming an instructor in art at Woodberry Forest School in 1995. Currently, Chair of Art Department at Woodberry Forest School.

Remember that October is Virginia Wine Month.  To celebrate, Flying Fox Vineyard tasting room is open every day in October, from 11:00 - 6:00pm.  On warm fall afternoons you can bring a picnic to enjoy with your wine on our patio - great views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  As it gets cooler, we will light the fireplace.  Fall is a great time to explore beautiful Nelson County and we are looking forward to seeing friends, both old and new.

Cheers!
