The Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement discussed a bill aimed at leveling the playing field between American and Chinese journalists working abroad. In 2011 868 Chinese state journalists held American visas only two American state journalists held Chinese visas. China's overseas state run media budget is estimated to be $6 to $7 billion whereas the US Broadcasting Board of Governors requested a mere $720 million for 2013 Voice of America and Radio Free Asia programming.

A 53-year-old Taiwanese passport holder was abducted on June 18 after visiting family in China for three days. Several days later Mr. Chung Ting-bang's family members learned that he was being held "to assist in investigating Falun Gong activities."

Taiwanese media have broadly covered the story and Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council said they would work to ensure his safety. Amidst the public outcry state mouthpiece Xinhua ran a story accusing Mr. Chung of having a hand in disrupting state media TV broadcasts.
