On February 8th, the US State Department confirmed that Chongqing deputy mayor and police chief Wang Lijun did visit the US consulate in Chengdu.
According to official reports Wang is on so-called "therapeutic leave" due to over work. Some media speculate that caught in a power struggle within the party, Wang went to the consulate to claim asylum, but was retrieved by Chinese security forces surrounding the area. The US State Department says Wang left of his own accord but will not elaborate any further... [Watch]

Speculation about the political futures of Chongqing Party Secretary Bo Xilai and his deputy mayor Wang Lijun have put them in the international spotlight. It follows rumors that Wang sought asylum at a US consulate last Monday. While some Western media have called the pair crusaders against crime-many Chinese have a different perspective.

Chongqing Communist Party Secretary Bo Xilai appeared at ease during a meeting with the Canadian Prime Minister on Saturday. But a political storm may be brewing for Bo, who is the top official in Chongqing, a provincial-level city in southwest China. Bo had long-hoped to enter the top ranks of the Communist Party. But China analyst Zhang Tianliang says that dream is over.
