NTD Increases Satellite Coverage Over China

Freedom Stellite

On October 19, New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television expanded the footprint of its broadcast to Asia via a new Ku-band satellite channel on Koreasat-5.

Adding NTD’s signal on Koreasat-5 enables audiences in coastal provinces of China, as well as Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and the Philippines to receive news reporting in Chinese language, news that is not filtered and distorted by China’s official propaganda machinery. “Our successful Ku-band service resumption over Asia could not have happened without the joint effort of all the people who supported NTD,” states NTD spokesperson Carrie Hung, “We express our heart-felt thanks to all of them.”

Back on June 16, 2008, NTD’s previous signal carrier Eutelsat abruptly terminated NTD’s broadcast over Asia under the guise of a “power anomaly” to its W5 satellite. Prior to this interruption, NTD was the only TV station broadcasting 24/7 uncensored programming into mainland China. After its signals went off the air, NTD received thousands of messages from viewers expressing their desire for information freedom.

After testing, NTD has confirmed the stability of its signal on Koreasat-5. In its coverage area, the signal can be picked up by satellite dishes as small as 50 cm in diameter. Meanwhile, NTD’s Asia Pacific Channel will continue its broadcast on the C-band of the ST-2 satellite.

Vocal Competition Culminates in Carnegie Hall Concert

Vocal Competion

Chinese vocalists competed fiercely for big prizes in NTD's Fifth Annual International Chinese Vocal Competition at Carnegie Hall on October 30. Taking the Gold prize of ten thousand dollars was I-Chun Cheng, a Taiwanese soprano living in New York. Wen-Yu Lin from Argentina walked away with Silver. Four contestants won the Bronze prize. In addition, four singers were selected to receive scholarships to study at master classes in Italy. These scholarships were offered by the Florence Opera Academy and Sicilia Opera Academy to encourage the preservation and promotion of classical vocal arts.

After the conclusion of the competition, many of this year and past years' contestants performed in a recital in Carnegie Hall. One of the world's most renowned  Bel Canto soprano Lucia Aliberti performed alongside the performers and wowed the audience with her seemingly effortless lyricism and range. In the award ceremony, La Scala's casting director Ilias Tzempetonidis was among the award presenters. Madame Aliberti also conducted master classes for the contestants on October 29.

Martial Arts Competition Crowns New Champion

GoldPrize winner Baili Wang On October 8 and 9, the Third NTD International Chinese Traditional Martial Arts Competition was held in New York City's Baruch College ARC Arena. Contestants, ranging in age from 11 to 90, came from Europe, Asia, North America and Australia to share their love for China's authentic martial tradition. Baili Wang from mainland China took home the only gold prize for his Black Dragon Spear performance. But all the contestants will take home memories from the competition, as they carry the spirit of traditional Chinese martial arts into the future.

Chief judge Dr. Youfu Li explained that the competition is for bringing forth the essence of Chinese martial arts and promoting traditional Chinese culture, "Reviving the traditional Chinese martial arts is a huge undertaking. Just like the Renaissance in the West, we are trying to revive the traditional Chinese culture and moral values ... Chinese martial arts incorporates many aspects -- it requires coordination of hands, eyes, body movements and feet; it involves holistic improvement in one's mind and body; it cultivates virtue; it includes amazing techniques; it is very artistic; it nurtures health and brings longevity... Unlike modern martial arts, it has very profound inner content."
