What's on?

Countdown to Culinary Competition at Times Square

Preparations are well underway for NTD's fourth International Chinese Culinary Competition. This year we are also celebrating our 10th Anniversary with a benefit gala at Pier Sixty.

The preparation process for this annual event led us to many new partners this year, who identify with NTD's missions to champion press freedom, revive traditional Chinese culture, and build a cultural bridge between East and West.

As a result, we will hold two special events during this year's competition. At noon on the first day of the competition, celebrity chefs supporting the charity Citymeals-on-Wheels will cook a meal for home-bound seniors. Later that evening, from 7:00pm to 9:30pm, a Forbidden City Feast Charity Event will raise funds for the Fallen Heroes of 9/11.

At our 10th Anniversary Benefit Gala, we will also honor Reporters Without Borders and Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights for their contributions to global freedom.

Join us as we mark this important milestone in NTD's history. See you at our grand event!

Competition: Thursday and Friday, September 22 and 23, Times Square, NYC
Banquet: Sunday, September 25, Pier Sixty, NYC

Mid-Autumn Festival - Monday, September 12

NTD Benefit AuctionThe Mid-Autumn Festival, known as Zhōngqiū Jie (中秋節, 中秋节) is almost upon us again. It falls this year on Monday, September 12.

The festival is celebrated by both Chinese and Vietnamese people and celebrates the end of the fall harvest.

If you step in to a Chinese supermarket or bakery at this time of year, you are sure to find a delightful array of mooncakes; some really large, some really small; some sweet and some with a salty taste.

Authentic mooncakes can be quite time-consuming to make, as preparing the fillings and pastry is an involved process. The final touches to the mooncake, etching intricate patterns and/or Chinese characters onto the top, give the mooncake its traditional look.

Below we provide you with an easy recipe for sweet mooncakes. Our recipe has just one kind of pastry and a simple red bean or jam filling.

Simple Red Bean Mooncake Recipe

Ingredients:
1/4 cup sugar
2 egg yolks
1/2 cup salted butter
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup red bean paste (can be found at Chinese grocery stores) or for a western version use one cup of your favorite flavored fruit jam
Red food coloring and stamp for the tops (optional)

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine softly melted butter, sugar and 1 egg yolk. Stir. Mix in flour. Make the dough in to a large ball shape, cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Make the dough into small balls that fit in the palm of your hand. Make a hole/indent in the center of the dough balls and place half a teaspoon of red bean paste/jam inside. You can leave the filling visible and finish now by brushing the top with the remaining egg yolk.

Or for an authentic look, try to spread the dough completely over the top of the filling. Flatten the mooncake slightly to make a surface to stamp. Brush each cake with the remaining beaten egg yolk. Dip the stamp in diluted red food coloring and press on the cake top.

Bake for 20 minutes or until the outsides are slightly brown.
