New Tang Dynasty Television will host its 10th Anniversary Benefit Gala - "The Emperor's Banquet," on Sunday, September 25 at Pier Sixty in New York City.

The banquet (www.TheEmperorsBanquet.com) is a celebration of a decade of championing press freedom and promoting traditional Chinese culture through NTD's global television broadcasts and websites. It will be preceded by NTD's International Chinese Culinary Competition in Times Square on Thursday and Friday, September 22 and 23. About 60 master chefs from around the world will cook in spectacular pagoda-roofed mobile kitchens before a live audience and TV crews in the heart of New York City. This will be the second year NTD's competition has transformed Times Square into the kitchen arena of Chang'an, the ancient Tang Dynasty capital of China.

The winners of the International Chinese Culinary Competition will then prepare the sumptuous 10-course feast at Pier Sixty. Qixi Festival (Magpie Festival or Chinese Valentine's Day) August 6th, 2011

NTD Benefit Auction

The Qixi Festival falls annually on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. On this day, young Chinese women might demonstrate their domestic skills, like melon carving, and at the same time wish for a good husband and beauty. Newly married women might wish to quickly become pregnant. The festival dates back to the Han Dynasty, (206 BCE - 220 CE), and is related to the love story of a weaver girl, the seventh daughter of a goddess, and a young cowherd.

According to legend, the weaver girl escaped from heaven because she was bored, and then fell in love with a young cowherd. They married and had two children. The weaver girl was a good wife and the cowherd was a good husband.

Later the goddess discovered her daughter had married a mortal. She was furious and made her daughter return to heaven.

Left behind on earth, her husband was distraught. Suddenly his ox spoke, saying that if he killed him and wore his hide he could go to heaven to search for his wife. Crying, he killed his ox and carried his two children to heaven. The goddess, again furious, took out her hairpin and made a wide river in the sky forever separating the two (forming the Milky Way between the stars Altair and Vega). The weaver girl sits sadly on one side of the river, weaving on her loom, and the cowherd sits on the other side, taking care of their two children.

Once a year, it is said all the world's magpies take pity on the couple and fly to the heavens to form a bridge linking them for just one night. This of course is on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.

Special Coverage

Defects in the design of the signal system have been blamed for the killer collision of two bullet trains last Saturday in Wenzhou, resulting in at least 39 deaths. That's the official explanation. According to Shanghai Railway Bureau director An Lusheng, the signal system at the Wenzhou South station failed to turn the green lights into red, leading to the crash.

An also pointed out that the operator on-duty of the railway station's telecommunication and signaling department failed to foresee that wrong signals might be given after a lightning strike that happened shortly before the eight cars derailed.

But that explanation has raised questions. Engineering experts say if it's true, it means the trains were not properly equipped.
