Dragon Boat Festival - June 6, 2011
On the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar each year, Chinese communities around the world celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival or Duanwu Festival (端午节).
The origin of the Duanwu Festival is often linked to the suicide of a poet and statesman from the Chu kingdom- Qu Yuan in 278 BCE. He was banished from the kingdom of Chu for opposing an alliance with the increasingly powerful state of Qin. Eventually the Qin state conquered Chu. Upon hearing the news of his country's demise, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.
The customs of eating zongzi (rice dumplings) and dragon boating racing during the festival are said to have come from the local people's reaction to Qu Yuan's death. It is said some threw rice into the river to feed the fish so they would not eat his body. Others were said to have paddled boats onto the river to scare away the fish, or to retrieve his body.

Chunghwa Telecom Rejection Threatens Survival of Independent Broadcaster NTD-AP
Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) of Taiwan recently rejected a renewal of its broadcasting contract with NTD Asia-Pacific (NTD-AP). NTD-AP has been leasing a C-band channel on CHT's satellite ST-1 since 2007. This satellite also covers a large area in Mainland China. CHT told NTD-AP that it will have fewer C-band transponders on its new ST-2
Satellite, which starting in August will replace the retiring ST-1. The company said this new satellite would thus have insufficient bandwidth to include NTD-AP.
CHT's explanation contradicts its official announcement that the new ST-2 will outperform the ST-1, and that the objective of deploying ST-2 is to provide existing customers with uninterrupted service and expand to new customers and markets.
NTD-AP fears that CHT's decision is instead politically motivated, similar to the Eutelstat issue, and that the Chinese Communist Party in Mainland China has offered financial incentives and put pressure on CHT to restrict NTD's uncensored broadcasts to the Mainland.
In May, CHT signed two major business contracts with China.
CHT is controlled by Taiwan's government. Several US Congressmen, European Parliament members and Reporters Without Borders staff have written letters to top Taiwanese officials raising their concerns that CHT's decision may reflect higher state policy, and hope the Taiwanese government will intercede to correct CHT's decision.
Taiwan Premier Mr. Wu Den-yih asked CHT at a meeting last week to continue providing C-band service to NTD-AP, while CHT maintained that there is no bandwidth on the ST-2. NTD-AP asks Taiwan's government to conduct an official investigation into CHT's claims.
