NTD Exclusive Video - Shanghai Residents Use Violence to Ward Off Forced Demolition

shanghai

At around 4:15am on December 29, 2010 in Yangpu District, Shanghai, resident Liuhao Wu and his neighbors used bricks, powerful firecrackers and gasoline-filled bottles to repel local government authorities, developers and several hundred migrant workers, who came to demolish their four-storey apartment building.

The property is a 60-year-old privately-owned residence and, according to Mr. Wu, the compensation offered is far from enough to buy property nearby. The residents fought to protect their rights to private property and to resist the forced demolition.

Prior to the incident, local authorities had cut the power and phone lines to the area, hoping to prevent locals from spreading news of the forced demolition.

Crouching in a dark location, Mr. Wu's neighbor risked his life to capture the entire incident on video.

As tensions escalated, Mr. Wu hung a huge banner outside his home saying "If this building is here the people are here, if the building is destroyed the people perish." He soaked the building with gasoline, suggesting if any of developers, officials, or their migrant workers attempted to enter their building to demolish it, he would set it alight.

Just after 5am, the government authorities and developers retreated. Some of the residents suffered injuries during the clash, and their building was severely damaged.

NTD Sponsors Shen Yun Performing Arts at New York's Lincoln Center

NTD Television is a proud media sponsor of the world's premier Chinese classical dance company, Shen Yun Performing Arts. During Shen Yun's 10-show run at Lincoln Center from January 6-16, audience members were taken on a journey through Chinese history, from the founding of Chinese civilization through the present day.

For Western audiences the show can be an eye-opener to Chinese culture, giving one a new appreciation for one of the most ancient civilizations in the world. While for Chinese audiences, the show fondly recalls the traditional tales told throughout childhood, which illustrate the underlying moral values of the Chinese people.

This year's program included performances inspired by classical Chinese novels "Outlaws of the Marsh" and "Journey to the West," as well as dances from China's different ethnic groups, and amazing vocals from a soprano, a tenor and a contralto.

Composer Tomaczek Bednarek had seen the show in previous years. After attending the opening show of 2011 at Lincoln Center he said: "And the heart that went in to the story... it's something to see, and then it brought tears to my eyes."

Celebrate Year of The Rabbit

February 3, 2011 marks the beginning of lunar new year. According to the Chinese zodiac, this New Year belongs to the Rabbit or Hare. Although the 12-animal cycle is commonly known as the Chinese zodiac, it is widely recognized in most East Asian cultures. In some countries, however, the signs may be different. For instance, in Vietnam 2011 will actually be the Year of the Cat.

Because rabbit is a cuddly and alert animal, characteristics associated with people born in the year of the Rabbit are: gracious, good friend, kind, sensitive, soft-spoken, amiable, elegant, reserved, cautious, artistic, thorough, tender, self-assured, shy, astute, compassionate, lucky, and flexible.

The Chinese language has a number of idioms that incorporate rabbit as a metaphor. Because rabbits tend to be prey in the wild, a "smart rabbit with three dens" describes a cunning person who will not be easily trapped. As a result, any attempt to "capture a rabbit by lurking outside a den" typically proves to be futile. "A fox mourning the death of a rabbit" describes a hypocrite. Finally, "Rabbit dies; dog gets roasted" is a fable where the hunter eats the dog that had just helped him catch a rabbit; it serves as a warning to those who aid and abet evil deeds.
