Higher Court Orders Investigation into Eutelsat's Termination of NTD's China Broadcast
Two years after French satellite company Eutelsatsuddenly cut NTD's broadcast into China, the Paris Court of Appeals has ruled that an independent expert should be appointed to determine the true cause of the broadcast termination, and whether NTD suffered any economic damage as a result of Eutelsat's actions. In issuing his opinion, presiding judge Marcel Foulon reversed an earlier decision by a lower court to dismiss the case.
French National Assembly Member Françoise Hostalier expressed her delight at a press conference announcing the court's decision, "I am happy to see that, despite all the bureaucratic obstacles, basic rights are being safeguarded... Others can be inspired by the steps NTD takes, to ensure their rights are protected. Therefore I think this is a major victory for democracy."
On June 16, 2008, Eutelsat abruptly stopped NTD's broadcast over mainland China, saying the termination was due to a "power anomaly" to its W5 Satellite. However, an investigation published by Paris-based Reporters Without Borders a month later showed that the broadcast interruption was a pre-meditated political move to appease Chinese communist officials.

A Gateway to Culture through Food
At the beginning of this year, NTD Television began airing a popular new foodie series, Food Paradise. Delivered in Chinese with English subtitles, it is the first Chinese show that explores the food scene in New York City. The show is divided into two segments by co-hosts Jenny and CiCi Li, and blazes a new trail by bridging the gap between cultures through food. While Jenny works in NTD's kitchen studio with award-winning chef Mike Chen, demonstrating how traditional Chinese dishes are made from scratch, CiCi pounds the pavement in the five boroughs to discover the best eats from all nationalities.
Food Paradise's YouTube channel (foodparadisetv) and Facebook pages have also garnered a loyal following. Episodes for a second season in English are already under production. This time CiCi is flying solo in Food Paradise: CiCi's NYC Diary as she presents the wonders of the Big Apple through the carefree eyes of a girl steeped in both Asian and Western culture.
Journey with us on this cultural escapade. Try new food, learn new facts and explore the world without leaving the comfort of your home!

Local Chinese Community Shares in World Cup Fever

As the 2010 World Cup in South Africa culminated in Spain's historic victory over Holland on July 11, many Chinese immigrants in Flushing, New York, were following the action at the Taiwan Center. This is the second time NTD has hosted World Cup viewing parties at Flushing's Taiwan Center, for the third-place and championship games.
Open to all, NTD sports anchors Yan Wang and Wei Li provided play-by-play narration in Chinese. They introduced the players background, rules of the game, and comic relief to the largely immigrant audience at the Taiwan Center.
Event organizer and NTD Vice President of Marketing Keran Feng explained that people of all ethnicities like to gather at pubs or public areas to watch major sporting events. NTD and the Taiwan Center wanted to create such an environment for the Chinese community as well, so Chinese sports fans could also share in the festivities of the World Cup.
In addition to watching the game, the party was sponsored by many local merchants with raffles and food sampling. Prizes for the raffles included water purifiers, rice cookers, photo sessions and cash. As one lucky audience member exclaimed, "I get to watch the game and win a prize, how wonderful is that?"
