Fundraising
in San Francisco
On March 27, NTD Television and Sound of Hope
(SOH) Radio co-hosted a fundraising luncheon in San Francisco for "Freedom
Satellite for China," a program aimed at raising funds to lease satellite
capacities to resume broadcasting of NTD Television and SOH Radio to China
without political interference. When NTD Television and SOH Radio started
broadcasting into China in 2004, they represented the only Chinese-language
media in China that were beyond the control of the Chinese communist regime.
Unfortunately, under pressure from Beijing, their satellite carrier Eutelsat
terminated the broadcasts in June 2008. In late 2008, NTD Television launched the
"Freedom Satellite for China" plan, calling people from around the world to
support NTD Television and SOH Radio to secure their broadcast into China. The
program target was to raise $2.0 million annually to lease the satellite
services that would provide independent bandwidth to NTD Television and SOH
Radio without interference from any third party. To put things in perspective, Google moved its
search engine out of China a few days before the fundraising luncheon on March
22. China observers widely noted Google's action as a sign that foreign
corporations were becoming less beholden to Beijing. Many analysts speculated
that other corporations might follow Google out of China. While we applaud
Google's demonstration of integrity under its "Don't be evil" motto,
we also hope that Eutelsat quickly repositions itself to be on the right side
of the information freedom debate. Meanwhile, both broadcasters will move
boldly forward with the "Freedom Satellite for China" program to send
uncensored information into China. To learn more about this plan and how to

During the 30-minute program, Mr. DiNapoli introduced the function of the office of the Comptroller and answered callers' questions ranging from unclaimed funds to getting assistance for small businesses.
"Zooming In's" Simone Gao took an in-depth look at the Chinese community's involvement in the 2010 U.S census in one of her recent programs. Her team conducted street interviews of ethnic Chinese in LA, San Francisco, New York, and Boston and gained firsthand knowledge of their doubts, fears, and questions regarding the census.
