Happy Year of the Tiger!
NTDTV wishes a hearty "Gong Hay Fat Choi" and Happy New Year to all our supporters in advance of the Lunar New Year. The celebration of this most important holiday on the Chinese calendar involves many customs and traditions that are steeped in ancient lore. According to legend, the Chinese character for "year" - 年(nian) - did not refer to a unit of time in the beginning. Rather, it was the name of a man-eating beast in ancient times. As the weather turned cold, it would roam the land in search of its prey. Every winter, just before the nian beast came out of its hiding, ancient Chinese people would gather the family in a huddle to defend against the onslaught of the beast. This observance of the passing of the nian beast eventually became an annual tradition. As a matter of fact, the Chinese term for new year celebration, 過年(guo nian), literally means "getting past the nian", or "passing the year".
Customs associated with this lore abound. Lunar New Year is the traditional time for family reunion. Every year we see in the news stories of people in China braving harsh weather and horrific travel conditions to trek thousands of miles to return to their hometown for new year. This is of course, supposedly, the continuation of the family huddle. Firecrackers are a common sight in Lunar New Year celebration. When the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, people light long strands of firecrackers to mark the arrival of the new year. Originally, these firecrackers were lit to create loud noises to scare away the nian beast in the middle of the night.
This year, Lunar New Year coincides with the Western holiday of Valentine's Day on February 14, NTDTV wishes everyone a joyful and happy Valentine's Day and peace and prosperity for the new year!
