This week's featured tool from NACCHO's Toolbox is a Syphilis Fact Sheet. This fact sheet was developed by the City of Milwaukee Health Department, and is written at an 8th grade reading level, targeting middle and high school-aged individuals.

National STD Awareness Month

April is National STD Awareness Month, an annual observance to raise awareness about the impact of STDs on the health of Americans and the importance of individuals discussing sexual health with their healthcare providers and partners. To learn more and find resources to support STD prevention outreach, check out the GYT: Get Yourself Tested website and the STD Awareness Resource Site. LHDs play a critical role in STD prevention and control by operating prevention programs and providing testing and treatment services. Information on STD prevention and control can also be found on NACCHO's HIV/STI Prevention Resources webpage and in NACCHO's HIV/STI Toolkit.

Webinar on Male Sexual and Reproductive Health

young man close upThe Center for Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention at the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the STD/HIV Prevention Training Center at Johns Hopkins and the Mid-Atlantic Public Health Training Center present this webinar on male sexual and reproductive health, specifically focusing on the health of young men. Study: Sex Education Linked to Delay in First Sex

The Guttmacher Institute has published a study showing that adolescents who receive formal sex education prior to their first sexual experience are more likely to use contraception than those who do not receive any formal instruction. Read the study, Consequences of Sex Education on Teen and Young Adult Sexual Behaviors and Outcomes, and find out more about the implications for adolescent health here.

Impact of Role Models on Health Outcomes for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth

diverse peopleA new study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health examines the impact of role models on health outcomes for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth. The study found that the presence and accessibility of a role model did not necessarily affect binge drinking, drug use, or STI diagnosis, but participants with inaccessible role models were more likely to display psychological distress. Learn more about the findings of this study and its implications for programmatic work, such as mentoring programs, here.

Online Training: Disseminating Messages through Social Media

The Banyan Tree Project, a national social marketing campaign to stop HIV/AIDS-related stigma in Asian & Pacific Islander communities, has several online trainings available through their website. Social Networking Media: Disseminating Your Messages Online is part of a series of trainings about social marketing. This training demonstrates how to use social networking tools (like Facebook or Twitter) to disseminate messaging online, despite limited resources or funds. The training also provides real-world case studies illustrating common pitfalls and best practices. Explore this training, and others, here
