Cienega High School
Cat Chat Newsletter
May 2012

Dear Cienega Parents and Families,

Each year the Vail School District needs to survey parents to support one of the Guiding Principles, to continuously improve. We can only do that with your feedback. If you have already completed the online survey, thank you. If not, there is no better time than now.

Do you have a teacher or staff member you would like to recognize? Do you want to share a success or an area that we need to refine? You comments are important to us and constructive criticism helps us to improve our school.

Here is the survey link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/V7QNC6G

There is so much to celebrate as our school year comes to a close:

  • Cienega High School was selected as an A+ School of Excellence by the Arizona Educational Foundation.
  • CHS Band students were in record numbers in statewide music competitions
  • Varsity Football team advanced to State Championships
  • Academic achievement scores have increased
  • Class sizes will decrease
  • A full fine arts department will continue
  • More Advanced Placement courses will be offered
  • We are a C2G (Commitment to Graduate) Model School
  • Senior Exit projects were an overwhelming success
  • Students graduating from JTED courses with a Career and Technical education certificate

As a staff, we are fortunate to have many successes. Our successes are because of our partnerships with our parents and the community. Another dynamic year will start on July 20, with students attending one of the five district high schools. The district continues to grow and for the upcoming year, we welcome Andrada Poly High School to the community.

Have a wonderful (yet short) summer break. We will continue to Facebook and Tweet announcements as the new year gears up. Make sure you like us on Facebook to get the most current information. We will be rolling out our new web page soon as well as our own APP, with a goal to keep you in touch with your school.

Thank you for being a part of our selection as an A+ School of Excellence.

Sincerely,

CHS GO KART TEAM GRAND CHAMPS!

CHS SOLAR GO-KART
Here is the run down about the Solar Go Kart Race WITHOUT the Sun at the UofA Tech park on Saturday, April 14th.

The event went on in the rain with team presentations given first inside the Vail Academy MPR. After the presentations, some waiting and a great Sonoran hot dog lunch, the teams were able to head outside and prepare the cars for the two race events, Time Trials and the Enduro. First up was two Time Trials - each about an 1/8th of a mile. Cienega had the lowest combined time total for the two runs, so Cienega won the Time Trials.
Next up was the timed 2 mile endurance race. It was a staggered start with Sunnyside going first with a 1/2 mile head start, Cienega was second, then Pueblo a 1/2 mile start behind Cienega. Cienega's Kart was designed to run on the sun, it can run all day if the sun is out, with the solar panels putting "juice" in two small 12 volt house alarm batteries. The other school's Karts were using two big automotive batteries each. Because of the heavy overcast, it would be a battle of who's batteries would last the longest in this 2 mile Enduro race. Sunnyside's Kart, the first one started, made it almost to the one mile turn-around before it ran out of juice. Cienega caught them and passed them before that one mile mark. Meanwhile, Pueblo started strong, but also lost all power at the one mile mark. Cienega's Kart, with the little batteries that were down to a 75% charge after the Time Trials, went on to the 1-1/2
mile mark before slowing to a crawl. Our kids built their Solar Go- Kart to run on the sun, so hoping the sun would come out, they kept their hands off and walked with the Kart as it
continued on with what little sun there was to charging the batteries. The other teams pushed their Karts across the finish line ahead of Cienega. Eventually, the Cienega Kart got across the finish line in this wacky Enduro. Along with the sun, driver Josh Velasco did some "Flintstone" foot work to "get er" done."
The sun did finally come out while the judges were adding up the team points for the Kart prep, presentations, safety, and the two races. Cienega was declared the "Grand Champion." It was a great effort and nice work by the Cienega students and all the advisors and community businesses that rallied around with their time, expertise and donations.

CHS SOLAR GO-CART
Thank you Cienega parents and Vail Community for your help with the Solar Go-Kart project this year.  Planning is already in the works for next year's competition and once again we will be looking for interested parents, businesses and individuals to help with this fatastic project.  If you are interested in being a part of this build please contact Cienega teacher Michael Keck at [email protected] or 879-2826.

FIRST PLACE WINNERS AT JTED BUSINESS ANALYTIC CONFERENCE

CHS JTED

We congratulate Esther Bee and Zoe Normand for winning first place at the JTED Business Analytic Conference on Friday.  Esther was a member of the team that won first place for their presentation on marketing strategies to increase in-state enrollment at the University of Arizona.  Zoe was a member of the team that won first place for their presentation on marketing strategies to increase out-of-state enrollment at the University.  They competed against five other teams in their assigned case study.  CTE business and marketing students from southern Arizona high schools competed at this conference.  They all did a great job!!

A NOTE FROM THE LIBRARY

Parents: Please make sure your student has returned all library books and taken care of overdue fines before they leave for summer break.

Students with overdues and/or fines will not be able to pick up take-home textbooks or get their new ID for next year.

We don't charge fines on days the library is closed, but it is always easier to start a new year without the need to pay for last year's fines!

FIX THE HURT ASSEMBLY
FOR FRESHMEN

Today served as both an interesting and fulfilling day after going out with Fix the Hurt Organization to educate a group of high school freshman on the dangers of domestic violence in dating and marriage relationships. It was great to see the young audience get so quiet and listen intently as Linda shared her personal story of losing her precious daughter to domestic dating violence. It was a serious topic that I found the students not only taking an interest in, but routing for the King family and Tennessee. I was able to share some dating, rape, and domestic violence statistics with the crowd towards the start of the presentation. I could feel their attention and interest in each statement I made. Having 12% of the audience stand up to illustrate the amount of their age group that would experience domestic violence in dating relationship was an effective visual to allow them to gain an understanding of how common it is. When Linda discussed the events leading up to her daughter's death and the feelings that came afterward it was very emotional. The room was completely filled with students and I know many of them were enlightened and empowered by the presentation. A sign language interpreter was used in order to reach those that were hearing impaired.

CHS LK Following the presentation the males left and with the group of females held back it was great to hear their questions. Many asked for advice on what to do in certain situations. This was a great opportunity to get to know the group better along with some of the personal challenges and struggles they are faced with. When time was up a smaller group stayed back to talk with Linda, many of which poured out their hearts and gratitude for her coming and discussed some very personal things; sharing a moment of deep reflection and connection that led to hugs and tears in many instances. It was very rewarding to be a part of their day and encourage healthy dating behaviors. The surveys the students turned in served as a point for a greater understanding of what the students thought as they shared their comments about the presentation. My hope is that each student was able to take something from the presentation today that will make them a better person and better their life and the lives of those around them in some fashion. If at least one person was moved or changed for the better after the visit today I know it was worth it. I know, however, that many were influenced and changed for the better; making today more than worth it.

Adrianne Prado

Thank you to the JCC for sponsoring this assembly.

SERVING BEYOND CIENEGA AND VAIL

CHS KEY CLUB

"We uphold traditional values such as respect, personal and social responsibility, honesty, and hard work." This quote comes from the Vail School District Guiding Principles, and this philosophy is evident in the goals of Cienega's Key Club. Each year Key Club (along with our Kiwanis sponsors) works to support different organizations, both local and international, that are looking out for the best interests of children. Our club has worked to support organizations like Streetlight Tucson, the March of Dimes, UNICEF, Intermountain Centers for Human Development, and Ronald McDonald House.

This student-governed, student-lead organization seeks to teach its members to have a heart for service as they develop leadership skills. At the recent District Convention in North Phoenix, one of our members was elevated to a position of great responsibility. Cynthia Morton, a sophomore at Cienega, was recently appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of the Catalina Division of the Southwest District. Cynthia's responsibilities will include leading all of the Key Clubs in the Tucson Metropolitan area as well as sitting on the board that governs all Key Clubs in Arizona, New Mexico, and part of West Texas.

Cynthia is well equipped for the task. In her two years at Cienega she has been a varsity cheerleader and a member of the National Honor Society as well as being involved with Key Club. What are her other aspirations for the 2012-2013 school year you ask?   She is working to start a debate team at Cienega, she is registered for all pre-AP and AP classes, and she was elected to serve as an officer in Key Club at the school. Although she is required to resign her position at the school as she takes on the new challenges at the district level, she is committed to continue to participate in the 50 hours of service each club member strives for each year.

As you are out and about in Vail, keep on the lookout for rising stars like Cynthia. We have some spectacular young people in our community and this star now has the opportunity to lead and serve far beyond the boundaries of Vail.

EUROPE 2013 - MADRID, PARIS, & ROME

Over Spring Break, 2013, the Foreign Culture Club and the Latino Culture Club are joining forces with EF Tours to bring you and your students an amazing combined trip to Europe. The trip will last 10 Days and the group will visit Spain, France and Italy. The cost will be under $3000 if possible, but the price is set by the number of participants so ask all your friends and relatives to come along. Adults pay a few hundred dollars more because only two share a room with a bath instead of four.

There will be a meeting in July or early August for all those wishing to learn more about this tour: Please keep this in mind and listen for the announcement or watch the July issue of Cat Chat for more information. We are looking forward to meeting all of you.

Just to get your interest piqued, here is a bit of information about this new and exciting tour we are planning for you. Our tour will start with 2 and days in Madrid. While in Madrid, we will see the Palacio Real, the Puerta del Sol, the Piaza Mayor, the Prado Museum, and many more amazing sites. Madrid is an art lover's mecca, with thousands of works to view and dozens of fountains and plazas representing thousands of years of history. We will view these sites with a guide who will explain the why, who, and when about each place, making the sites come to life for you.

After Madrid, you will board a high speed train and travel overnight to Paris. Imagine crawling into your bunk on the train, while the sound of the passing tracks lulls you to sleep. When will you get another chance to experience such a journey? Sleeping on a berth on a train is one of those experiences your student will remember for the rest of his or her life.

In Paris, we will have 3 days to visit Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre Museum, the Eiffel Tower, the Latin Quarter, Montmartre, Artist's Square, Sacre Coeur Cathedral, Muse d'Orsay and Sainte Chappelle if possible. Also, we will spend a few hours exploring the most extravagant palace ever built, Versailles. We should have time to take a boat ride on the Seine, climb to the top of the Eiffel Tower, and visit the Catacombs below Paris, as well. And of course, there is always plenty of time for shopping. While shopping, don't forget to have lots of snacks to tickle your taste buds.

To get to Rome, we will board a quick flight, which actually costs less than other forms of transport and it would take twelve hours if we went by rail. Once in Rome, we will have two days to see one of the oldest cities in Europe. We will visit the Vatican which includes the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica, all amazing. We will be guided by a local archeologist through the Roman Coliseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and other sites from the Roman Empire. Rome by night includes several of the fountains seen in recent films, lots of Gellatto, which is Italian ice cream, and shopping, there's always time to shop. Imagine walking through more than 2000 years of history! That's Rome.

Included in your tour fee are Flights to and from Europe and the flight between Paris and Rome, the Night Train from Madrid to Paris, Metro and Bus transportation where needed, transfers by Chartered Bus to and from each hotel, airport and train station, Breakfast and Dinner each day, Entrance into included sites along the way, Local Guides such as the Archeologist who takes us through Rome, Hotel rooms with included Bathrooms, and a Professional Guide that speaks every language of our tour. The cost for this tour if you went on your own as a family would be more than double per person. Europe is more expensive than the US, and EF knows how to get us great deals.

Not included: Lunch and snacks, tipping all your guides and bus drivers, and of course, souvenirs. Since we are planning an extra day in each city just to explore and shop, you may find other museums or sites you want to visit. Plan on having a little extra cash on hand for those must-see places not included in the fees. There is always a lot to see and do, every day. The tour company plans each day fully so that students don't get bored. The tour is fast and high energy.

How do you sign up for this tour? Come to the meeting at Cienega High School in July or early August. The tour is for all members of the Vail School District and their friends and families. Please invite everyone you know to join us on this amazing tour of Europe.

If you have any questions or you are unable to attend the meeting, please feel free to contact one of us for more information. We welcome your emails and questions. Thank you for your interest.
