Dear Parents, The warm weather brings challenges to the school dress expectations for students. Shorter skirts, dresses, shorts, and spaghetti strapped tank tops are being worn to school. As stated in the dress code, cleavage is to be covered, and no underwear is to be showing (straps, boxer shorts, etc.). Clothing should not expose areas of stomach, side, or back. I understand the challenges of "height, long arms, long legs", however, as a parent of a tall, long-legged, girl myself, it may be necessary to shop a little more to find clothing that is appropriate for the school setting. Some clothing that is being worn at school is causing a distraction to students, parents, and staff. I am seeking your assistance in monitoring the dress of your student(s) before they leave the house in the morning. I also understand that this may not be possible with work schedules, and therefore, you son or daughter may be asked to change into a shirt and shorts that we provide. I will be the ultimate authority on dress coding a student, however, I rely on our Campus Response Team Monitors, to assist me with monitoring dress code. The Site Council approved the dress code as a way protecting the dignity and comfort level of students. If you have questions, comments, or concerns, please let me hear from you. This is our school. Included in this issue is a guest editorial from a concerned parent on dress code. I appreciate your support, and again our collective effort to keep Cienega the school where we have spirit, pride, respect, and dignity is valued. Respectfully,
Dr. Tricia Pea, Principal |
A LETTER FROM A CONCERNED PARENT
|
Dear Parents,
I have a daughter that is a freshman. I drive my children to school every day. I sit in the parking lot from about 7:30am until 8:20am. I watch all the kids coming to school. I have to say that there are some really good kids here. I am concerned with what I have seen in the way the kids dress. I am not sure if you look at your child before he/she leaves the house. What concerns me the most is when I see BEAUTIFUL girls wearing extremely short shorts and dresses that are not long enough to cover them.
In today's world our children need to be protected and educated. Our world is only as safe as we make it. If we are letting these young ladies wear clothing that brings unwanted looks and gestures we are not protecting our kids. When your child wears these clothes it draws more unneeded attention to our children not only from boys their age but grown men. Wearing exposing clothes is an open invitation for sexual harassment. We need to stand together and unite with the school to help our children understand that you don't have to wear short clothes to get attention. They can get positive attention from being smart and excelling in their school-work.
Our children's education is the most important gift we can give our kids in life. There will be plenty of time in their life to wear what they want to wear. We need to set limits as parents of what is acceptable for a child to wear to school. There is a time and a place for that kind of clothing. Just maybe ask yourself and your child "would you wear that to your job or to an interview?" High school is our children's "job". Let's have our kids dress accordingly.

SEP JUDGES NEEDED
|
Senior Presentations are an opportunity for Cienega's seniors to officially demonstrate the culmination of the year's Senior Exit Project. CHS's project consists of three parts: the research paper, shadowing hours, and the presentations before a panel of teachers and community members. The presentations held at the end of the year are the final component of the project. In a sense, completion of the presentations marks a huge milestone in our seniors' lives, similar to graduation.
We are still in need of community members to volunteer as judges for our SEP presentations. If you can volunteer for one or more days we would love to have you. THESE PRESENTATIONS SIMPLY CANNOT HAPPEN WITHOUT OUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT.
Senior Exit Project presentations will take place on the following dates: May 2: 4 - 8pm May 3: 4 - 8pm May 4: 1 - 5pm General facts: - Judges need to commit to the entire 4 hour time slot.
- All students are required to complete a powerpoint presentation, some may choose additional visual aids.
- Students will talk about their shadowing experience, as well as broader information about critical issues within their career field (as reflected in their research paper).
- Students will have a portfolio detailing their senior project: all required forms, their research paper, journal of their experience over the year, and any other information the student feels is important.
- Students are judged using a rubric that is provided to judges. There are no qualifications to become a judge. Everyone is welcome!
- WE NEED 55 JUDGES PER DAY TO HAVE A MINIMUM OF 3 PER ROOM! EVERY PERSON COUNTS!
Please contact Karen Brandt, Volunteer Coodinator via email

IMPORTANT SENIOR INFORMATION
|
- If your student is taking any courses through correspondence or Dual Enrollment through Pima, it is their responsibility to bring the transcript from that school to the registrar in order to get credit for the class and to be able to participate in graduation ceremonies. This deadline is MAY 1st unless taking a Pima class. That deadline will be two days after the class has been completed.
- If 7 absences are accumulated in any class regardless of the reason, unless it is a school related activity, THE STUDENT WILL NOT PASS THE CLASS AND WILL NOT GRADUATE IF THE CLASS IS A REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION! An appeal may be scheduled after May 1st for illness or extenuating circumstances. Contact Della Ruiz for an appointment.
- Seniors planning on attending a four year college should have applied to their schools by now. You may lose valuable scholarship opportunities by procrastinating any longer.
- Be sure to check the CHS Website for updated scholarship opportunities. The link can be found by entering the website at http://chs.vail.k12.az.us click on "Counselor" link, from there click on "Scholarships". This page is updated regularly, so check back often.
- Senioritis can sometimes creep up on students. Please be aware of this and monitor your students attendance and grades carefully so that there will be no unhappy surprises in May when it is time to celebrate the graduation of your son or daughter from Cienega.
- Please utilize PowerSchool on a regular basis and stay informed of the progress your son or daughter is making in his or her classes: http://ps2.vail.k12.az.us/public/
- There will be a Senior Parent Meeting regarding graduation on Wednesday, April 18th "Everything you wanted to know about Graduation but were afraid to ask!" Don't miss this meeting!

DDC LAST TO FIRST! ON TO BENSON AND THE PIMA COUNTY FAIR!
|
The Destruction Derby Club participated in the "Touneyment of Destruction" the last weekend in March with a "bang." Senior, Clay Nallin, driving a freshly prepared '72 Impala, was the first contestant knocked out on Friday night's event - a big disappointment. All day Saturday, students spent the day repairing the Impala for the evening event. At the last minute the repairs were finished and Clay drove the Impala from the pit area to the arena for the starters flag. Clay crashed and bashed his way to a first place finish - great job Clay! Joe Burros also drove two events with the DDC Chevy pickup. Although he did not place in the very rough truck division, Joe put on a good show putting big hits on the other competitors. The truck will be back in action in Benson later this month. April is a busy month for the DDC. Saturday April 21 there is a Derby in Benson and then on April 28th the students will have two cars competing in the Pima County Fair Destruction Derby. That event features a $1000 first place prize. |

A NOTE FROM HOSA, LCC & CTE

Dear Community Member:
Cienega High School HOSA, Latino Culture Club, and Career & Technical Education classes are sponsoring a home renovation for a local children's homeless shelter, which is currently under way. Our students are helping provide a safe, comfortable environment for the fifteen children who currently reside there. Evidence suggests that community service programs can instill values and nurture development of positive personality and behavioral characteristics in teens. This project facilitates a win-win situation for all involved. Please help support our efforts by becoming our community partner. We are still in need of $1,958.00 in donations to complete our project by April 20th. Anyone interested in contributing to this worthwhile project is urged to make a tax credit donation to Cienega HOSA via the following link. No donation is too small. https://investinarizonayouth.org/ For more information please contact Cristy Parks at 520-260-4854 or [email protected] Thank you for assisting us in learning the importance of giving! Sincerely, Cienega High School students
