Dear Cienega Families:
Happy New Year! The second semester is well under way and Cienega staff is busy planning for the 2012-2013 school year. With the opening of Vail's newest high school, Andrada Poly, Cienega enrollment is projected to be less than 1700 students. With the passing of the override your tax dollars have secured fine arts, athletics, teaching positions, and lower class sizes. Our academic programming includes additional Advanced Placement courses, Pre - AP courses, and varied electives preparing your student for college and career readiness.
As part of the enrollment process each high school is initiating a residency check to balance our open enrollment applications. All incoming freshmen and new students to Cienega will be required to show proof of residency by submitting a recent utility bill and mortgage statement or rental agreement to the Registrar. This is not meant to be an inconvenience, but again our commitment to use your tax dollars wisely.
Transfer requests for the 2012-2013 school year between Vail high schools are being accepted now. Deadline to commit to a school is March 9th in order to balance class sizes between all high schools. Please note that no transfer requests between schools regardless of grade levels will be granted after this deadline.
Our registration for next year begins at the end of this month. The course description book is on our website under the counseling tab. Seniors are now required to graduate with four math credits. Juniors and seniors are required to take a minimum of five courses. Freshmen and sophomores are required to take six courses. Counselors will be working with students during Advisor Base to select course choices.
The 2012-2013 school calendar is included in this Cat Chat and is available on our website. Please look at the calendar when planning your vacations/trips.
The first half of this school year has gone by fast and has been full of student and staff achievements and accomplishments. This truly demonstrates Vail's motto, "Where education is a community effort".
As always, thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tricia Pea, Principal |
CHS RECEIVES GOLDEN BELL AWARD!!
|
Dr. Pea and Superintendent Baker Dr. Pea, Mr. Erickson, Ms. Mooney, Mr. Koenig, and Mrs. Carrier CatsCARE Summary When a visitor enters Cienega High School's campus in the Vail School District, he will notice a positive tone and a culture of high expectations because over 2000 students along with 220 staff members are involved in the school-wide Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports (PBIS) program known as CatsCARE. The program was implemented in the 2005/2006 school year with numerous goals in mind. First, of course, was to increase student achievement, but more importantly, Cienega wanted to provide a high school for students where rigor, relevance, and relationships contributed to a highly positive and caring climate and school culture and where students had a real voice. The components of CatsCARE is multifaceted to include as many staff, and students as possible. They include: Phat Cat (an rewards incentive program), Top Cat (a citizenship grading program), YES (Youth Empowered for Success), Cat Frat (the PTA), and the Principal's Advisory Focus Team. All have served as a tremendous contribution to the school's Excelling labels for six years running, its A+ distinction, and the overall improved climate of the school earning the ASBA Golden Bell Award. |

CIENEGA'S ACADEMIC DECATHLON
|
Academic Decathlon is a rigorous 10-event competition that includes math, science, social studies, literature, art, music, essay writing and speeches (impromptu and rehearsed) and an interview. This year's theme is "The Age of Imperialism" and all the decathlon topics connect to this overarching topic. Students, under the advisers Mrs. Susan Botos, Dr. Robin Rathman, Mr. William Alexander, and Ms. Carrie Lindsay, have attended clinics at Arizona State University and scrimmages at Canyon Del Oro HS this fall to compete against other high schools. The team members meet weekly at lunch and after school to discuss the academic decathlon curriculum and practice speeches. Cienega's academic decathlon team currently has 12 members and will be travelling to Yuma in early February for regional competition. We will be recruiting soon for next year's team. A student team includes students with different achievement levels (GPAs) working together and as individuals, so all academic levels are welcome to join the club.

AC3 ALMOST READY FOR SHOW
|
The AC3 '68 Karmann Ghia is black and red all over. Students put in a bunch of quality time over the Winter Break and have completed the red and black paint job on the car. It is in the final stages of completion with the new interior being installed and the freshly re-chromed bumpers being hung. The students are very excited to show the car in it's finished form, at Vail, Tucson and Phoenix shows. It's shinny red and black - you can't miss it. AC3 students are still taking your tax-deductible donations of unwanted cars, trucks, auto parts and cash. Contact Michael Keck at [email protected] or at 879-2826. A BIG thank you to all who have already done so!

WELDING CLUB GETS UP EARLY
|
For most students, the first day of winter break is a day to sleep in and relax. Not so for the Cienega Welding Club students and their sponsors, they all were up early Saturday December 17th to the attended a presentation at the Tucson Electric Power Plant on Irvington Road. The TEP Head Engineer explained how the power plant works and the Head of Maintenance displayed the specialized welding that is required to keep the plant running smoothly. After the presentations, students were treated to a complete tour of the coal-fired power plant. Thanks to the American Welding Society, who made special arrangements for the presentations and tour for the Cienega Welding Club.

STAR PROGRAM FOR FRESHMEN
|
The Freshman STAR Program will be starting back up during the week of January 23rd. English/World History STAR will be held on Tuesdays in Room 302 with Mrs. Schroder and/or Mrs. Botos. Physics/Algebra STAR will be held on Wednesdays in Room 312 with Mrs. Farr and/or Mr. Livingston. For the STAR Program, any student who has a 59% or lower in Physics, Algebra, World History, or English will be required to attend STAR after school from 3:30 to 5:45 pm. A student will be required to attend STAR once every two weeks until their grade moves to passing. In STAR, they will have the opportunity to make up any homework assignments in the prior two weeks of work in which they received lower than a 70% in the class that they are failing. Students are not allowed to make up quizzes and tests, but there will be supplemental assignments if that is the only reason they have a low grade.
This Semester we are also offering STAR for Economics with Mrs. Franzen in room 746 during zero hour (7:20--8:20) on Tuesday and Thursday. This WILL NOT be a requirement for students to attend, but it will be an option for Freshman students to make up work from their Economics class.

ALL ABOUT SEBA
|
Supporting Education, Business & Achievement (SEBA) is a club here at Cienega. The club's primary mission is fixated on leadership and responsibility. The students are asked what they want to accomplish during their school year. They then have to set up and attend meetings and plan what measures they will undertake to achieve success. The members then set those measures in motion. The unique thing about SEBA here at Cienega is that it is expected that they do 99.9% of all the work for any projects they undertake. The club sponsors Joe Hunt and Walter Hill (the founder and President of SEBA) only administratively support the students with their projects. They are expected to run everything completely autonomously. The project that is currently under their purview is the school talent show. They have been planning and working diligently on advertising the upcoming event which is scheduled for January 18th in the school cafeteria during AB. They are responsible for everything from screening the respective talent auditions, setting up the stage for the various performances, and selling tickets. The success is entirely proportional to their involvement. This is but one of the ideals that this club is designed for. It is SEBA' vision to get leadership minded students to think and to experience situations that they may see in the future. SEBA believes that this approach gives them some basic fundamentals on how to access and get desired results after a committee has brain stormed and settled on a particular project. They get to work the project and confer at their pre-determined scheduled meetings held every other Friday. Below are just a few of the members. Edgar Poe, SEBA President, Danielle Figures - SEBA Vice President, and Matt Arnold - SEBA Event Coordinator |
