From the Principal
Dear Cienega Families,
I am in awe that the first semester of this school year will be ending soon. This has been an incredible semester for students, staff, and programs. I want to extend congratulations to the student athletes and coaches for an incredible fall season. Our student athletes have been showcased in various arenas and at the State level competitions. This was Cienega's first year with divers. This was Cienega's first year to reach the State Championship level in football.
To see our students work to achieve perfection in their craft takes dedication and perseverance. The Copper Thunder Marching Band and Color Guard are clearly exceptional when they take the field. Our drama students performed moving performances of the Elephant Man and the One Acts. Academically, our students work to "get it done" in the classroom. Cienega has reached 100+ students in National Honor Society, and scholarship letters are coming in daily to our seniors. The site council voted to add several new AP course offerings for the upcoming school year. We will feature these courses in the next Cat Chat. A sincere thank you for passing the override. This support is fundamental to the success of our student programs. Additionally, if you are contributing your tax credit dollars to the District, go to our Invest in Arizona website. Your contributions can go to one or multiple projects across the District. Tax credit contributions is a dollar for dollar tax CREDIT - Tax credits provide value add to our programs. Your donations are greatly appreciated and wisely used. Not all is perfect on all home fronts, however. We have had several stolen electronics recently. Predominantly iPods. Should you see your son or daughter with an iPods or any other electronic device that you did not know about, please have the discussion with your son or daughter about honesty and integrity. No one wants or likes their personal property stolen. Please help us monitor our teens by watching for used electronics that are new to your home. We want stolen items returned to the rightful owners. Lastly, Vail Pride Day is right around the corner. Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 18. Nominations for support staff, teacher, and volunteer of the year are being accepted. The deadline for submitting nominations is December 9. Please take a moment if you would to recognize staff that has influenced your son or daughter in some way. Nominations are accessed at these links: SupportStaffOfTheYear
VolunteerOfTheYear
TeacherOfTheYear As always, thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tricia Pea, Principal |
Cienega's Football Program Rocks!
|
Cienega's coaches, players, and fans should be beaming with pride. The players and coaches played and coached a tremendous game against a stacked Chaparral team with a decisive size advantage.
The Bobcat players never stopped fighting. The coaches never relented. This was apparent to anyone who watched the game at the stadium or on television.
The players and coaches of this program personify excellence and class. This was also clearly exemplified by our principal, Dr. Pea in her interview on FoxSports AZ, when she mentioned how proud Cienega is of its football program and its academics, which have consistently earned an excelling label.
Nemer Hassey, Jay Johnson, Matt Johnson, Steve Schween, Chuck McCollum, Brett Holley, Mike Keck, Mark Fontana, Joe Hunt, and the rest of the coaching staff have done an exemplary job of building one of the top programs in the state of Arizona. Cienega doesn't recruit players to come to the District. Players are attracted to the program because of the team's success, which is achieved fairly through hard work.
All of Cienega's success originates with Nemer Hassey, who is receiving well-deserved, and long overdue accolades for his coaching prowess and leadership skills as the CEO of the football program.
The team's motto is painted on the locker room wall and states, "Nobody outworks us." This motto was personified by the Cienega Bobcats Saturday night in Tempe. Quite simply, the Bobcats never quit until the final whistle.
Congratulations to the coaches and players on all of your success.
And thank you for providing us fans with a season filled with enduring memories and thrilling triumphs that we can proudly look back upon.

AC3 SPINS OFF 2 MORE NEW CLUBS
|
The AC3 car club started out 5 years ago with the "small wonder," a VW Bug, and has spun off two new clubs in order to keep up with student interest. The new student clubs are the Cienega Welding Club, and the DDC - a destruction derby club. The AC3 club is still going strong with three active VW based projects, the AC3 Ghia, the Drag Bug and the V-Rod, while the off shoot DDC sports two demo vehicles, a Chevy Pick-up and a Chevy Impala.
The Welding club has an identity all it's own with students welding and fabricating a variety of projects in support of the school facilities. The purpose of the welding club is to both satisfy student interest and to create a stepping stone for obtaining a welding certification and/or future job placement.
As always, students in these clubs are accepting donations of old vehicles, and cash for tax credits. Students are very grateful for the community support they have received.

CHS Girls Golf Rocks!
|
The Girls Golf team were awesome at the state championships. Out of the 55 Division I girls teams (enrollments of 1950 students through enrollments of 3,500 students), Cienega Girls placed 4th behind Xavier, Hamilton, and Pinnacle. The two best individual placements we had were Jordan Carter at 15th and Kirsti Grau at 18th. Belle Rivera placed 48th, Brittney Makar placed 56th, and Julia Johnston placed 64th respectively.
On a side note, at the state tournament, there were only three teams in the state that did not have a girl shoot 100 or more on either day's 18 holes of golf: Xavier, Hamilton, and Cienega. Great showing by the girls and please congratulate them on a great season.

Need for Quality Infant and Toddler Care in Vail Area
|
by Ally Baehr, United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, Chair of the Vail Community Action Board's Early Childhood Education Sub-committee
It may come as no surprise to you, but the child care options for working families with infants and toddlers in the Vail area are few and far between. With these tough economic times and the increase in single-parent households, the option of being able to keep one parent at home to care for the children is rarely heard of these days. Unfortunately with Arizona's long waiting lists for child care subsidies, little help for working families, and limited options for healthcare, the situation keeps getting worse and the probability of private child care centers being able to build centers in Vail is rapidly decreasing.
However, there are many options available to help recruit and support in-home child care providers. If you are interested in caring for children in your home and receiving income for doing so, programs largely funded by First Things First, Arizona's early childhood system, can help! Project M.O.R.E. helps with getting your business started, becoming a licensed home care provider, recruiting children into your child care, choosing the appropriate materials and toys you may need, choosing nutritious meals, incorporating early literacy and physical activities into your lesson plans, and many free professional development opportunities. And not only is there support for these activities, there is also financial support to help get you started. If you are interested in any of these supports, they would love to help you out, answer your questions, and set you on the path to success. Please call Project M.O.R.E. at 321-3769. If you are interested in becoming a DES Certified Child Care Provider, please call Child and Family Resources, Julie Gonzales at 321-3775.
Now if you are wondering about child care options for your own children, there is a wonderful program called Child Care Resource and Referral. This program takes all of your needs into consideration and produces a list of child care options that fit your needs (both center-based and home care providers). Whether you are looking for something close to home or work, for day or evening hours, weekdays or weekends, they can help you find what you need. Please call 800- 308-9000 or go to their website at www.arizonachildcare.org. If you are a family with activated/deployed military parents, there are also resources for reduced fee child care if you cannot access services on base. For more information, please visit www.NACCRRA.org/Military. |
