Cienega High School
Cat Chat Newsletter
October/November  2011

From the Principal

Dear Cienega Families,

October has gone by quickly and the semester will be at an end before we know it. We are actively planning for the upcoming school year as we look at calendars, bell schedules, elective courses, clubs, activities, fine arts, and athletics.

Make a Difference Day was a huge success at the school. The LDS church cleaned up around the back of the school and the Vail Christian Church and members of Pantano Christian Church poured concrete to finish sidewalks, painted around school, and cut out the grass for the courtyard project. These projects included hundreds of volunteer hours and donated supplies and materials. These community members made a difference to our school. My sincerest thank you.

The safety of students is always a priority. I have requested for a crosswalk to across Mary Ann Cleveland Way at Kush Canyon Lane. The study is currently being done and we should hear results soon as to whether a crosswalk will be installed.

In addition, a Union Pacific representative came to see me to address the issue of the teenagers that are "hanging out" by the tracks across from the school. It has been observed that teens are pulling out the wiring along the tracks. This wiring runs the railroad crossing gates. The gates may not go down when a train is approaching if the wiring is damaged or pulled out. Please share with your teens the danger that this can cause. It would be devastating to our community if anyone lost their life at the railroad crossing. Should your teen know of a "friend" who hangs around the tracks, please share the name with me.

Today, October 31, principal Darcy Mentone will be addressing freshmen and sophomores about Andrada Polytech. She wants to share with the students the opportunities that Andrada will give to students. She will be holding a parent informational meeting on November 10 at 6:00 pm in the Cienega Library. High School choice for parents and students is important to prepare students for college and career opportunities. Opening a new high school is needed as Cienega and Empire are both overcrowded. Andrada Poly will provide the opportunities and interest for many of our students reducing the total enrollment at both Empire and Cienega.

Lastly, the end of the election for Proposition 405 is quickly approaching. Please be informed on the facts of Proposition 405. Exercise your right to vote and mail in your ballots.

Vail School District has been named the number one school district in Arizona and yet again, all of our schools are Excelling. This is because we believe that, "Education is a community effort."

Thank you for your continued support and involvement.

Respectfully,

ATTENTION ALL SENIORS
Start Applying to Colleges
and Universities NOW!

  • Start applying to colleges and universities NOW! The Arizona universities have a revolving admissions process (first in, first processed). Right now, a decision is made in about 4 - 6 weeks. Additionally the student will be notified if a merit based scholarship has been awarded. This helps plan for added savings if needed or for finding additional scholarships. Students wanting to apply for the Barrett Honors College at ASU should be aware of new changes in the process. The priority deadline to apply is November 15th.
  • College night is Wednesday October 5th at the Tucson Convention Center from 6:30 - 9:00 P.M. Parking is free. Hundreds of colleges from across the country will be available for questions. http://www.tusd.k12.az.us/contents/depart/counseling/college.asp
  • College Representatives are now on campus regularly. Have students stop by Mr. Tritz's office for a schedule of dates.
  • Fall Testing Deadlines for SAT and ACT:
    • All seniors attending a 4 year College or University must take the SAT OR ACT.  It is strongly recommended to take it this fall if a student has not already done so. Practice tests are available in the counseling office.

     TEST                    DATE                    DEADLINE             WEB Address

     ACT                    Oct. 22                     Sept. 16               actstudent.org

  • Scholarship opportunities are listed and updated on the Cienega Website on the "Counselor Page." View the site often for regular updates.
  • Financial Aid information will be available in January, look for details in future Cat Chats!
  • Students with a 3.5 GPA that have no "C's" or lower in any core classes, and have EXCEEDED all three sections of the AIMS test qualify for a tuition waiver from the three state universities. The Spring 2011 tests were the last tests available to qualify. Students can still qualify for the tuition waiver if they exceeded TWO tests and have a score of 3 or higher on TWO AP Exams.
  • Any student taking correspondence classes MUST complete the course and deliver a transcript to the registrar prior to May 1st. Failure to do so will result in NOT participating in the graduation ceremonies.

15 Minutes of Sleep Could
Make Your Child Smarter

Trouble getting a child out of bed in the morning is not a rare occurrence. Lack of sleep has a variety of consequences, including a decrease in I.Q. Children who don't get enough sleep have trouble focusing on schoolwork, and their brains are not as adept at storing the information they do learn.

There are a variety of reasons children do not get enough sleep. Many kids are overscheduled and overburdened. After school activities, sports, music, video games, and homework quickly fill a child's evening hours. Parents sometimes have a busy schedule as well, making bedtimes later and mornings earlier. Many parents would be surprised by how many hours of sleep their children should actually be obtaining. A general guideline from WebMD tells us that children 3-6 years old need 10-12 hours per day, and children 7-12 still need a full 10-11 hours, while 12-18 year olds can get by with only 8-9 hours of sleep a night.

One night can make a huge difference in a child's performance.  Canadian Living tells of a study in which children between 10 and 14 were allowed 5 hours of sleep for one night. The next day the children's test scores had fallen. Another study of 9-12 year old boys in Israel showed that a single hour of lost sleep resulted in a measurable loss of memory capacity and recall times.

A one hour difference of sleep can mean years for a child's intellectual capacity. Fourth and sixth graders were tested in a study by Dr. Avi Sadeh of Tel Aviv University for three consecutive nights. According to NY Magazine, one group went to sleep 30 minutes earlier than the other which stayed up an extra half hour. The performance difference that single hour created was an astounding 2 grade levels. The scores were further apart than the scores of a normal 4th grader versus those of a 6th grader. By losing a single hour of sleep, your child is losing up to two years of his/her potential brain power.

In the same NY Magazine article, another study testing pre-kindergarteners found similar results. Every hour of lost sleep on the weekends due to later bedtimes caused a loss of seven points on a standardized school-readiness test. Elementary school students also showed a loss of seven points on a vocabulary test when there were sleep problems. The reduction of 7 points is the same I.Q. reduction as lead exposure.

High School aged children suffer similar symptoms. A University of Minnesota study of more than 7,000 teens showed that the students who earned A's averaged 15 minutes more sleep than those who were earning B's. The students with C grades slept 11 minutes less than the B students and 10 minutes more than those earning D's. The results from this study were almost identical to those from another study of 3,000 high school students in Rhode Island. The numbers speak volumes. Every minute counts.

over Spring Break with Foreign Culture Club and EXPLORICA!

The Foreign Culture Club would like to invite Vail School District students and parents, as well as Vail employees, to join us on an amazing trip to 3 European countries over Spring Break 2012. We will be traveling to England, France and Italy for 12 glorious days.

The tour costs around $3000 for students for the entire 12 days. Adults cost around $400 more than students because they room only 2 to a room. The airfare and hotel alone would be more expensive than the entire tour if you booked this trip yourself. Amazingly, the tour pice includes Air, Hotel, Train from London to Paris, Night Train from Paris to Florence, Motor Coach from Florence to Rome, transportation to and from included sites in each city, special Tour Guides in each city, and a tour guide that speaks English, French, and Italian who stays with the tour for the entire 12 days to make sure your tour is as memorable as possible.

If you are interested in this tour, or would just like more information, please contact Debora Webb at: [email protected]. You may also use Tax Credit Donations to pay for this trip. Don't wait for the price to go up again. Sign up as soon as you can and get ready for the trip of a lifetime.
