CHS PARTICIPATES IN "WHITE OUT" ONLY TOGETHER WE HEAL

WHITE OUT

On Friday, January 14th, approximately 1300 Cienega High School students participated in a "White Out" group photograph taken at the school's football stadium bleachers. The photo was an effort to show support for the victims and families of the tragic shooting at Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' "Congress on your Corner" event that occurred at the Safeway shopping center at Ina & Oracle on Saturday, January 8.

The "White Out" photograph, which included hand-painted signs with positive messages, such as "Violence is not the answer", "We are all in this together", "Peace", "Unity", and "Harmony", was a collaborative effort between Cienega's Student Council and Cienega's Art Mural Club. The event was organized by Cienega teachers Jason Miller, Liz Miller, and Melissa Molina-Garcia. The group photo, taken by Cienega student Eliza Nimrichter, will be printed and accompanied by a letter, which will be mailed to victims of the tragedy and those agencies who first responded to the tragedy and were instrumental in saving lives.

A breathtaking sign that incorporated Arizona's state flag with intertwined hands and the message, "Only together we Heal" was hung from the center of the stadium's press box and presently hangs in the center of Cienega's gymnasium, serving as a tangible  reminder of Cienega's positive response to the tragedy.

KGUN-9 television reporter April Madison visited Cienega's campus to cover the event and interviewed Cienega students Brilee Homme, Taylor Plecity, and Janice Suess to discuss their roles in the school's event.

Later that day, at 1o'clock, students from the Student Council released scores of white balloons into the sky in an additional ceremony to honor the memories of those killed.

Finally, Cienega Student Council is spearheading a canned food drive and will continue to collect canned goods through the end of January. Parents and students who wish to donate canned goods can bring their donations to Cienega High School between 8:00 a.m. and 4 p.m. The nonperishable items will be donated to Tucson's Community Food Bank, a favorite charity of Congresswoman Giffords.

"This is one way that we can come together as a community," Janice Suess said. "It's important to show that we can do something positive to unite our students, while honoring the memory of those who lost their lives by supporting causes that they championed."

AC3 STUDENTS HARD AT WORK!

AC3 students have been working very hard on all of their car club projects this school year.

AC3-3

The AC3 '68 VW Karmann Ghia is really coming together and the student's hope to have it finished in time for Vail Pride Day.  Every nut and bolt has been turned on this car, it's been repainted top to bottom, and all the chrome and bright-work has been polished to a high shine.  You'll need to bring your sunglasses to view this custom beauty!

The Dragster Bug is in full swing with students currently building the chassis. The rear axle housing has been raised and dropped spindles are being installed on the front beam. Soon the students will start building the full roll cage that will fit inside to protect student drivers on those 12 second ET runs down the Quarter-mile drag strip.

Students wrapped-up the Destruction Derby season with a very respectable 3rd place in the points standings!

AC3-DERBY

It literally came down to mere seconds that edged them out of second place.  The students are preparing cars for the new "race" season that starts in April and runs through October.

As always, students would not be able to work on these great projects without your support.  Thank you so much for your generous donations of cash and cars to keep the AC3 club going.  We are still accepting your tax-deductible donations of cars and parts. Contact Michael Keck at 444-9103 or email at [email protected]
