Explore Hammertown Country: A Perfect Peeping Weekend in Pine Plains

With the late peaking of the leaves almost anywhere in Hammertown Country is beautiful right now but we've got some great ideas for things to do and see around Pine Plains.

First, get up and put on your hiking or walking shoes!

Breakfast/Brunch

Mountain Cow - stop in for a light breakfast and some java.  Great coffee, latte and espresso!  Yummy sandwiches and soups too.

Agriturismo - have brunch at the new farm-to-table restaurant in Pine Plains on the main drag (in the old Crumpets space)  There's a terrific all day brunch on Sundays which Rural Intelligence just loved.  more...

A Simple Wedding--All You Need is Love

I was fortunate enough to attend the most beautiful and enjoyable country wedding this past weekend.  Television & radio executive (and kale farmer extraordinaire) Dick Novik, wed world-renowned flutist, TV commentator and author, Eugenia Zukerman. Set on Dick's lovely farm in Columbia county it was a perfect day.  Over the years, I have come to the conclusion that the celebrations I enjoy most are the ones that are the simplest.
Thank you Dick & Eugenia for sharing your day with us.

Is Collecting Seeds for the Birds?

Your favorite plants are worth repeating.
A great and inexpensive way is to collect the seeds and save them for planting in late winter (indoors as you would with your vegetables).  Annuals usually grow quickly from seed while perennials may take a year or two before they become mature.  If this is your first time, start with something easy like sunflowers, nasturtiums or chives.

Welcome our newest Choice: The Farmer's Wife in Ancramdale

The Farmer's Wife is my hometown place. Whether it be for morning coffee, breakfast, lunch or something to take home when I don't have time to cook.
Over the last decade, Dorcas Sommerhoff has made The Farmer's Wife the go-to place in the Hudson Valley for catering any event...large or small; formal or informal...she delivers!  And the recent addition of Dorcas' step-daughter Emily and her husband (and Hammertown favorite chef) Job Yacubian, to the family business has proven a phenomenal success.
We are delighted to include The Farmer's Wife as one of our Hammertown Choices.  Read more...

This Week's Recipe(s): Two Delicious Autumn Soups

There's a chill in the air and I'm thinking: SOUP!  I happened to be watching my favorite morning show and there was my favorite cookbook author, Mark Bittman.  Apparently, he was thinking soup too.  So much so that he presented two recipes...and they both sounded so good I had to share them:  Roasted Butternut Chowder with Apples & Bacon (pictured here) plus a bonus recipe which Mark calls: The Best Vegetable Soup Ever.  Click here to get them both...
