Joan's pick this week: La Chambaware
When we first saw La Chambaware at the Chicago Food Show it was so
beautiful and striking we didn't know if it was art or cookware. These
smooth gorgeous black pieces are handmade in La Chamba village in
Columbia. Made from black clay, this type of cookware is unglazed, lead free,
heats evenly and dates back to the age of the Incas. Easy to clean, surprisingly light weight yet incredibly durable. And, reasonably priced!

Master v. Disaster - Part 3: The WallThis Wall stood between me and my future |
Did I say the wall was coming down?
Well, a few months later, I was starting to have my doubts. This was,
after all, a pretty big deal for me. It meant taking the kind of risks I'm not used to taking. The bigger kind.

Hammertown Garden-Drought & Deer Tolerant? Not so much.
The front garden at Hammertown has been in place for quite a few
years and is well-established. But, this particular summer has taken
its toll. Upon losing our beloved Abby (beautiful golden retriever and official
grounds keeper & guard), the deer have moved in and have eaten all
the garden phlox and started on the hostas behind the Gatehouse. Although sprayed with repellent, the deer didn't care - they ate the
blooms and the foliage. What to do....

This Week's Seasonal Recipe: Fresh Corn Soup & Zucchini Muffins
From our guest recipe blogger, Doris Cassar:
My daughter Edith and I love corn and never tire of finding new ways to
prepare it. This light, simple soup came about when I was craving a
warm bowl of "something corny" but not quite in the mood for a heavy
chowder laden with bacon and potatoes. Frozen corn can be substituted
for fresh-but by all means use fresh if you have it.
