Cool Sorbet for Summer Chill

This is one of my favorite recipes from the Herb Companion. To save some time, I use Rose Geranium infused sugar. This is so yummy - really chills you out on a hot summer day.

Rose geranium has a particular affinity with strawberries and seems to intensify their flavor.

* ¾ cup sugar

* ¾ cup water
* 8 medium-sized rose geranium leaves
* 4 cups ripe strawberries, hulled and washed

* 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1. Bring sugar and water to a boil in a small saucepan.

2. Drop in rose geranium leaves, cover pan and remove it from heat. After 15 minutes, strain syrup, pushing down on leaves to extract flavor.

3. Puree strawberries with syrup and lemon juice in blender or food processor. Freeze in ice cream maker until slushy-firm. Scoop into storage container and freeze until firm enough to scoop.

July is not only National Grilling Month, it's also National Blueberry Month, National Horseradish Month, National Hot Dog Month and National Ice Cream Month! Now there's a combination for a great backyard barbecue.  It's also National Parks & Recreation Month - but check with the park rules first before you grill there.

An Herb for All Seasons... Mint

Mint leavesMention Mint and something different comes to mind for everyone - candy canes, breath fresheners, juleps, mojitos, vaporub,  chocolate chip ice cream, tea, weeds, etc. Most think of Peppermint (Mentha x piperita (hybrid cross between M. aquatica and M. spicata)), or maybe even Spearmint, but there are actually dozens of varieties of mentha. Well Sweep Herb Farms lists 48 kinds of mint in their catalog with 7 types of peppermint and 6 types of spearmint. Mint creeps, stands tall, can be curly or small- but it's always fragrant and wonderful!

Growing mint is usually an easy task. Peppermint loves to wonder around the garden, so try to contain it in some fashion. I grow mine in an old wheel barrel. Bees love blooming peppermint, and it adds a touch of charm to any garden. Mint is not only useful - it's pretty too!

Throughout the years, peppermint has been used for it's sweet, bright flavor in culinary creations. It's also been a useful health ally. Mint tea can help relieve stomach and digestive issues, cold and flu symptoms,  headaches, and cramps.

Peppermint Oil is also antibacterial and antiviral.   After cleaning off a wooden table, take a goodly handful of Peppermint (stems and leaves) and a little water and rub down the table or wood surface. The Peppermint will further clean the surface and add a nice fragrance that will whet the appetite.

What makes Peppermint an herb for all seasons?

In summer, add some mint to lemonade or drinks to add a cooling touch. Mint tea can help cool sunburns and bug bites.

When autumn starts bringing about coughs and colds, a mint steam or inhaler will help open up noses. Gargling with a strong mint tea will help ease sore throats.

Winter bring in those lovely peppermint candy canes. A warm mint tea will help soothe tummy troubles from all that extra eating. A mint infused salve will help reduce the pain of sore muscles and joints.

Spring is the time when the windows are just getting ready to be opened and the house can get a good airing out. Spritzing some peppermint hydrosol can freshen everything up and sanitize the air. And mint jelly is yummy with lamb.

We'll be harvesting lots of mint over the next few weeks. It'll be needed throughout the year. Not just for cooking and cleaning, but for our mint infused products as well: Mintingle Toes Salt Scrub, Tingles Lip Balm, Mint Ceo Broingloid (Dream Mist), Strawberry Mint Muscle Run, Faoiseamh Migraine Soother,    Gréine Sunburn Spray and our seasonal Lotion Bar Yule. That's a lot of mint!

Hi  !

The dog days of summer are certainly upon us. It's been mighty hot and dry for the most part in New Jersey, and what rains we find aren't helping the temperature much. But that also means it's fair, festival and gardening season. I've been picking lots of calendula, St. John's Wort, lemon balm, bee balm, rosemary, thyme and so much more. If they aren't in one of our products now - they soon will be.

Be safe in the heat - but have a fun lovely summer!

Slainte,
Cindy and Joanne
