Warming, Wonderful Clove
Cloves, the lovely little dried flower buds that look like little tacks, are commonly associated with the winter months. But they provide fragrance and warmth and a bit of zip any time of the year.
Cloves have been used for centuries. Over 200 years BCE, cloves were used in the Chinese court, as a way to freshen the breath before an audience with the Emperor. They continued to be a precious commodity throughout history. They were so highly prized that they were at the heart of battles and piracy.
Not only were cloves valuable for their flavor, they were an important medicinal ally. Cloves contain eugenol oil, making them natural anesthetics. If you have a tooth ache, make a strong tea from some cloves and use it as a mouth rinse. Or if you have some Clove oil, put just a drop or two on a cotton swab and rub it on the sore area and it will help to alleviate the pain. Rub a little on your skin and you can feel the warmth as your circulation perks up. It's a key ingredient in our Tingles Lip Balm for that very reason, plus it's an anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial.
The scent of cloves is inviting and warming, with just a touch of excitement. As a bonus, it is said to act as a mosquito repellent. And those wonderfully fragrant pomanders of orange and clove are said to repel moths.
Of course the kitchen is where cloves seem to shine and warm brightest. Ground or whole, they can be used in all aspects of the meal, from appetizers, to soups, deserts, condiments, and main dishes. Check a pickle jar, and you're bound to find a few cloves in there. Peaches are a perfect companion to cloves. Check here for a lovely Marinated Grilled Peach recipe. Yum.
And there is nothing as warming and cozy as a lovely cup of chai tea. Chai is relatively easy to make. For a very health filled recipe, check out Learningherbs.com. One of my favorite chai teas is from Ducky Life Tea, but if I happen to be out, which occurs rather frequently since I go through so much of it, I use this recipe for an in between fix.
QUICK CHAI TEA 1 bag of good black or roobios tea 1/2 small cinnamon stick, broken into pieces 4 cloves 2 cardomom pods 2 whole black peppercorns A small piece of fresh ginger or a 1/2 teaspoon dried ginger 2 allspice berries
Put the everything into a cup. Boil the water and pour over the spices. Cover the cup and let steep for about 5 minutes. Strain and add milk and sugar. I sometimes like to add a little dried orange peel in there as well. This is wonderful chilled as well.
Little flowers are starting to show through the last of the snow. When you look at cloves, think of the power little flowers can have.

A Tad Mad For March
March holds so much promise and even magic in it. Weather (as we've seen recently) can be as wild as a lion or as mild and fluffy as a lamb. It welcomes the arrival of spring and celebrates the heritage of the Irish in America. Oh - and there's some basketball playing in there, too. Here are some other reasons to be mad for March.
Get your creative side going and participate in National Craft Month! Do you have a hobby you haven't worked on in a while? Or is there a craft you enjoy making. Now is the time to rekindle that pleasure. You never know where it could lead - that's how we started Celtic Chairde Creations!
Laugh a little! March is also National Mirth Month! Laughter soothes the spirit - and it's good exercise, too!
Maybe all of that laughter will give you an idea. Everything starts with an idea - no matter how large or small. International Idea Month encourages exploring those ideas. Toss them around, not matter how wild and wacky!
March is also Red Cross Month. Whenever there is a disaster, like the earthquake in Haiti or Chile or the flooding in the North east, the Red Cross is one of the first organizations there. They provide support, necessities, shelter and medical care where ever they are needed. It is an amazing team of dedicated volunteers and staff.
And of course, March welcomes in Spring! The season of promise and return of the flowers and sun. Enjoy the madness!
