Sage For All Season
. Turkey with sage stuffing is about as traditional as you can get for Thanksgiving dinner. However, this common herb is so much more than stuffing flavoring or for that matter, common.
There are many varieties of sage on the market now - from sweetly fragrant pineapple sage to tri-color or Black bush, from ornamental Indigo Spirals to our wonderful Garden Sage. Well Sweep Herb Farm has over 25 types of sage.It was chosen as the 2001 Herb of the Year because of its rich history and medicinal and culinary uses.
Native American's burned sage to cleanse an area of negative vibrations. You can purchase sage sticks at many stores - the scent is soothing and calming, certainly. It has been used to help with depression, relief from night sweats and as an anti-inflammatory. Sage also helps relieve flatulence - which might be why it's a popular flavoring for Thanksgiving.
It's pungent fragrance is used in many herbal preparations. But it's also a culinary powerhouse, adding fragrance and flavor to a wide variety of dishes - including desserts! One of my favorites is a Sage and Apple Upsidedown Cake, from the Herb Companion.
As you sit in the chill of winter, resting after a festive Thanksgiving, think about your garden for next year. Add some color, fragrance and inspiration by planting some variety of sage. Remember to dry some of it for next years dinner!

Why We Give Thanks

I've
often felt that thanking people was something you should do all the
time, not just once a year. Someone does you a kindness, you thank them for it. But Thanksgiving is more than just saying
thank you, it's about being Thankful. And celebrating Thanksgiving
gives us the opportunity to focus our thoughts on what we have to be
thankful for. Of course that always seems to come amidst the panic of
cleaning and cooking, but it's still worth the time to take pause and
take stock of those things and people for which we give thanks.
Building friendships, traveling the state, and discovering a voice for that inner muse are all thing Cindy and I are thankful for this time of year. Preparing for the holidays is exhausting, but creating products that are helpful and that people enjoy makes it all worthwhile. And we've made some great friends along the way - Charles and Larissa at Blind Bob's Pottery, Jane Sandbar at Ducky Life Tea, and so many others. It's wonderful to have the opportunity to meet and get to know these wonderful folks.
We're also very thankful to you - our customers. Your enthusiasm and support are making this journey of our growing business exciting and fun. We learn so much from you, and hopefully you learn from us!
And most importantly, we're thankful to our friends and our families. Their support, encouragement, amazing amounts of patience, and willingness to be guinea pigs as well as assistants, is making this experience exciting and fun.
So as your cursing over the dry turkey, or the pumpkin pie that cracks instead of sets, remember - it's not so much about the food, but about the people you're thankful for that are at your table. |
