Cochlear Implant User Speaks Out
A dedicated advocate for the deaf and hard of hearing community, Arlene Romoff, was recently interviewed about her experience as a bilateral cochlear implant user. In her new book, "Listening Closely", Arlene chronicles her experience of receiving and adapting to the world of surround sound.

Updated Resource is Released
Technology never seems to be static. Educational resources can't be static either. The fact sheets titled Neurotechnology for Spinal Cord Injury Part I & II were recently updated and released. As a joint project between the National Spinal Cord Injury Association and Neurotech Network, this resource was originally developed in 2008. So much has changed in three years. The latest version was recently release through Spinal Cord Central and the Neurotech Network Spinal Cord Injury Page.

News of Interest to Consumers
Below are highlights of developments in neurotechnology that are of interest to consumers, disability and medical professional communities:
- Reflexonics Viberect was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This is a medical device designed for men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunctions (ED), including those undergoing post-prostatectomy erectile rehabilitation and those with spinal cord injury-induced ED. - A pioneer of pacemakers of the nervous system, Dr. Warren Grill, was recently profiled on his contribution to the field of neurotechnology. Read more about this prominent biomendical engineering researcher by clicking here.
- Restorative Therapies, a sponsor of Neurotech Network, recently released a new rehabilitation system, the RT600. This new device uses FES technology for stepping and standing therapy. Check it out on their website.
- The Kessler Foundation/Kessler Institute of Rehabilitation in West Orange, NJ is the first center in the U.S. using the new LokomatPro to provide intensive gait training to patients for both clinical and research applications. The LokomatPro is a neurorobotic system offered by Hocoma. To read more click here.
- Development of a pain sensor for the brain is currently in human clinical trials. Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital have recently developed a system that makes use of a new imaging technique, arterial spin labeling, to show the areas of the brain that are activated when patients with low back pain have a worsening of their usual, chronic pain. This research is published in the August issue of the journal Anesthesiology.
