• EnteroMedics expects to implant its first patient with its obesity controlling therapy by the second quarter of 2011. VBLOC therapy is delivered through laparoscopically implanted leads to intermittently block vagal nerve trunks and blocking those nerves can help in the management of obesity. Vagus nerves are cranial nerves that extend from the brain to the abdomen. The device is not yet approved in the USA.

• Bioness Inc. received clearance from the FDA for its NESS L300® Plus System. The device combines the NESS L300® Foot Drop System with a thigh stimulation cuff, to provide knee flexion and extension in addition to ankle dorsiflexion during gait. It is intended for persons with upper motor neuron injury or disease resulting from stroke, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury. 
• A landmark case study was recently published in the journal Lancet titled "Effect of epidural stimulation of the lumbosacral spinal cord on voluntary movement, standing, and assisted stepping after motor complete paraplegia: a case study" Read more about this scientific breakthrough by clicking here.  
• Otto Bock, a German-based prosthetic company, is developing new bionics for the upper limb. Learn about their latest developments and how they are using Myoelectris technology to guide the technology for the user.  
• A new feasibility study was published for people suffering from chronic pain due to amputation. The first human test using patented technology by Neuros Medical applied high frequency Electrical Nerve Block to five participants. Read more about this new technology by clicking here.  
• Cyberonics, Inc., manufacturer of vagus nerve stimulation systems, announced the first implant of its AspireSR seizure response product. The implant was received by a participant in Belgium with ictal tachycardia (heart rate increases associated with seizures) who has been suffering with epilepsy for many years. The new device allows the user to induce additional stimulation manually through the use of a magnet, but do not currently sense the onset of seizures.
