2012 Colorado Legislative Sessions Begins

2012 Colorado Legislative Session Begins

Yesterday marked the start of the 2012 Colorado Legislative Session. It's already shaping up to be a very active session around education, and, as always, the League will be very involved in advocating on behalf of charter schools over the next five months.

This year, the League's legislative agenda centers around aligning policy with current practice and model law documents created by the League and national collaborative partners (www.bcsq.org). The League will also be focused on implementing the recommendations from the 1412 Committee on charter school and authorizer standards. The League hopes to streamline processes in order to create a higher level of objectivity around charter school applications, renewals and revocations, as well as incentivizing authorizers to improve their own practices.

Vinny Badolato, the League's VP of Public Affairs will be hosting monthly webinars to keep Colorado charter schools abreast of policy changes taking place at the Capitol. Stay tuned for invitations to those events. For an in-depth look at all potential legislation related to education, check out this recent article by EdNews Colorado.

If you have any questions regarding the current legislation session, please contact Jason Callegari, Public Affairs Associate at 303-989-5356, ext. 119 or jcallegari@coloradoleague.org.

Charter School Spotlight

CIVA-LogoCIVA Charter High School
Wins $10K in Subway High School Heroes Contest

CIVA Charter High School was one of four winners in a national Subway High School Heroes Competition, earning $10,000 to boost the school's athletics program.

In November, Anthony TorresValle, a junior at CIVA, nominated the school for the contest. After being approved by Subway, the competition began on Facebook, where users were able to vote once per day for their favorite high school group. The contestants, all outstanding student organizations, were grouped into categories according to the size of the high school they attended. Finalists were those groups that had received the most votes in their perspective bracket.
Although CIVA was listed in the "small high school" category, they proved to be mighty coming in second in their bracket taking them into the next phase of the contest - a video competition.
CIVA-VideoOver the Thanksgiving holiday, while most students were enjoying time off school, a group of dedicated CIVA students and their film teacher, Mr. Jeff Miller, went to work producing a 60-second video to convince Subway to select CIVA as a High School Hero. The video segment, appropriately themed "there is no 'sub' for determination," paid off. Recently, CIVA was notified by Subway that they were selected as a winner of $10,000 in the competition. The District 11 charter school was one of only four winners nationwide and the only school representing Colorado.
The video can be viewed on You Tube at: http://youtu.be/EK0gdmpUyDk

CIVA Charter High School is a premier college preparatory school authorized by Colorado Springs School District 11. CIVA is committed to ensuring collegiate success through a focus on academics, visual and performing arts, character education and athletics. Learn more at www.civacharterschool.org.

Charter 2.0 - Charter Schools and Public Education in Colorado
Colorado League of Charter Schools

As the founding executive director of the state's charter support organization, the Colorado League of Charter Schools (CLCS, or alternatively, the League), Jim Griffin has had the pleasure of working in the charter community in Colorado since early 1994. Mr. Griffin has been involved in the development of most policy and practices common to Colorado's charter sector since then. For most of that time, our state's charter policy and practice has been a disjointed mix of directives based on presumptions built into the original charter law, some of which work well while others do not. Alongside the policy mix, we have experimented, with varying success, with a variety of services and supports to help the charter sector.

Back to School Tallies: Estimated Number of Public Charter Schools, 2011-2012
National Alliance of Public Charter Schools
As the public charter schools movement approaches the 20 year anniversary of the opening of the first charter school, the sector continues to grow. Over 500 new public charter schools opened their doors for the 2011-2012 school year. There are now approximately 5,600 public charter schools. The 7 percent growth in charter schools is a demonstration of parents' demand for high quality educational options.
