Charter School Spotlight

Georgetown Community School

Georgetown Communty School (GCS) is a small town, Core Knowledge charter school serving children ages 6 weeks to 5 years. Community is definitely the right word to describe GCS.

Georgetown Community School takes pride in their morning assembly that takes place every Friday before class begins. During this assembly students, teachers, parents and administrators celebrate birthdays, new students, talents and accomplishments. Parents are welcome and encouraged to stay for this event.

GCS utilizes a play-based approach, featuring individualized plans to facilitate growth and learning. Children enrolled in the infant, toddler, preschool, and pre-Kindergarten classes are introduced to the basic classroom structure with Open Court Reading and the Core Knowledge preschool sequence in addition to the traditional early education. GCS also provides after school and summer care for all ages up to the age of 12.

For more information about GCS, visit www.georgetownschool.org or call 303-569-3277.

An (Updated) Primer on Virtual Charter Schools: Mapping the Electronic Frontier

National Alliance of Charter School Authorizers

This is the first in a series of briefs aimed at improving authorizer practices for virtual charter schools. Later documents in this series will address specific adjustments to authorizer application and review processes, the emergence of and issues related to blended-learning environments that combine a brick-and-mortar setting with advances in technology, and policy issues associated with cyber schools and blended learning.

The Effect of Charter Schools on Student Achievement

National Charter School Research Project/University of Washington-Bothell

Assessing literature that uses either experimental (lottery) or student-level growth- based methods, this analysis infers the causal impact of attending a charter school on student performance. Focusing on math and reading scores, the authors find compelling evidence that charters under-perform traditional public schools in some locations, grades and subjects, and out-perform traditional public schools in other locations, grades and subjects. However, important exceptions include elementary school reading and middle school math and reading, where evidence suggests no negative effects of charter schools and, in some cases, evidence of positive effects.
