New & Specialized Training Classes
Safe Kids of Tarrant County Co-present at Upcoming TransportationTraining
Safe Kids Tarrant County's Dana Walraven will be co-presenting at the new transportation training classes hosted by Camp Fire. The new seat belt and transportation laws that impact licensing were introduced in early fall and the Safe Kids safety seat inspection service received an increased number of calls from child care providers.
In response to the large number of requests, they chose to integrate their knowledge and support into the training courses offering child care providers a well-rounded class that offers a variety of resources.
The first course is already sold out, but space remains in the November 14 class. Sign up soon, space may be limited!
If you have questions, or to sign up for this class, contact Elizabeth at 817-831-2111 ext. 143 or elizabeth@campfirefw.org.

Do I pay for that? Navigating training hours and compensation
Guidelines and rules around compensation for training can be difficult to navigate for both directors and child care teachers. Education and training play an important role in the quality of care provided and can help with the marketing of your business to families. Advanced training also helps increase the professionalism of staff and their confidence to handle situations as they arise.

Sometimes, though, the rules can be a little fuzzy. Here are a few tips and tidbits to make sure your center stays within budget and provides employees with the time and training they need.
According to the Wage and Hour Division (WHD) of the U.S. Department of labor,

Employers must pay for training hours if:
Time spent attending training that is required by the state for day care center licensing is working time for which employees must be paid.

Employers do not have to pay for time in training if training meets these four criteria:
  1. Training occurs outside normal scheduled hours of work.
  2. Training is completely voluntary.
  3. Training is not job-related (unless employee attends an independent school or college by their own initiative outside work hours).
  4. No other work is performed during the time frame of the training.
To better understand these guidelines, or to read them for yourself, visit the WHD and read fact sheet #46.
Child Abuse and Prevention Training and Free Calendar
Prevent Child Abuse Texas will host the 24th Annual Conference on the Prevention of Child Abuse on February 22-23, 2010 at the Sheraton Dallas.
This statewide conference offers quality training and information on child abuse and neglect prevention, along with educational programs. Some workshops provide specialty training credits and professional development.  Visit the conference site to learn more about the speakers, workshops or to register.
Additionally, the 2010 DFPS Child Abuse Prevention Calendar is available for order. Some family service agencies have priority in ordering and there is a five box limit (each box contains 110 calendars). Orders should be placed by October 19 at noon.  The calendars are first come, first served.  In the event the stock runs out, a downloadable PDF calendar will be made available. Order today!
Don't Forget to Submit Your Resource and Referral Update
Each year, information is updated in the Camp Fire USA Child Care Resource and Referral database. This annual update ensures we have the most current information available for your facility on file. This information is shared with families looking for child care in Tarrant and surrounding counties.
This year, as an added bonus, if you update or submit your information to our Resource and Referral database by November 1,  you will be entered to win a free CTS training class. Even if you have no changes to your information, or your center is on a waiting list, we still want to hear from you.

Use the link below to access the update form. Print, fill it out and fax it back to 817-831-5070.
Because of our reach and targeted audience, this service is a no-cost marketing tool for your center to get in front of families looking for child care in your area.
If you need more information about the process, previous listings or eligibility, please call 817-831-5060 or email ccrr@campfirefw.org.
