Las Aguas, the monsoon: This spectacle of summer rain never fails to excite. As temperatures edge into triple digits, Tucsonans spend much of the time in anticipation of those treasured, drenching moments when the skies explode, the desert cools, and dry washes awaken as rivers. This edition of BorderLore, in part, celebrates the monsoon's contribution to folklife.
- Dr. Jim Griffith shows us the humorous side of waterlore in his retelling of the story of Lake Elmira (that body of water that forms in the Stone Avenue Underpass after a particularly heavy rain). Read more.
- TMY food vendor and immigrant food entrepreneur Patricia Espinosa-Artiles describes the excitement of her first Southern Arizona monsoon experience. Read more.
- In other news we honor our Chinese grocer heritage and its relevance to Tucson in a story about a "rolling history" party through Tucson neighborhoods on September 15. Read more.
- Meet up with TMY Indian food vendor Saurabh Mintu Sareem as he recalls foods important in summer cooking and gives us the heads up about Indian refreshments planned for TMY. Read more.
- Learn how the Tucson AIDS Walk will meld with TMY's Sunday morning footprint, and get information about the Festival interactive displays and lecture planned to honor material cultural practices and quilting arts done in the tradition of social awareness around AIDS and other issues. Register for the walk and read more.
There's a rhythm and flow to Tucson traditions, punctuated with summer stories. May our community's diverse cultures continue to inspire us and give us a deeper sense of place.
