Have you always wanted to document and write about your own cultural heritage, occupational lore, your family traditions and history, or that special object, custom, ritual, or way of speaking of those in your own ethnic or folk group? |
|
The Tucson Meet Yourself Folklore Field School may be the answer to that long-held desire to sharpen your skills as a cultural writer.
The Folklore Field School will provide 15 hours of training on how to observe, reflect, document, and write about folk practices of one's own cultural or occupational heritage (or a heritage one is very close and familiar with).
Folklore writing is about the artful and distinctive things people in a community (with others like them) do, say, and make (the way we express our cultural identities through the embellishment of ordinary living ways -through music, song, dance, speech, celebrations, food, and artifacts).
The final products (essays and photos) will be geared for possible publication in TMY's E-magazine/newsletter "BorderLore," our new Jim & Loma Griffith Arizona-Sonora Folklore Archives, or another TMY publication.
At the TMY Folklore Field School you will learn:
- How to hone your observation and listening skills;
- How folklorists think about cultural identity, traditions, and transmission;
- How to look into family and community histories (and where the two intersect);
- How to use a diverse set of tools and practical approaches for documenting cultural practices (the way professional folklorists and anthropologists do it);
- How to integrate photography into your own project of documentation;
- How to design your own research project of personal, family, or occupational heritage and lore.
- How to write short, crisp documentary essays ready for publication in blogs, websites, and e-newsletters.
