DAS TORAH ANYONE?

By: Joel Moskowitz

Last Shabbat, my Shul hosted as scholar in residence, Dr. Marc Shapiro, chair of the Judaic Studies department at the University of Scranton. On Friday night Dr. Shapiro gave a brilliant lecture about Rabbi Yaacov Yehiel Weinberg who came to prominence in Europe before World War II and his attitude towards both Torah and secular study. Dr. Shapiro has covered this broader topic in a book he wrote called "Between the Yeshiva and Modern Orthodoxy." What I found so captivating about the discourse was that 100 years ago and even before that, Orthodox Judaism was having the same type of intellectual debate as we have today. Not only that, but sometimes the debate was so heated that letters and articles revealed through research of that time show not much has changed. We are a diverse and passionate people.

It was with this fascination in mind, that I read an ongoing dialogue between Rabbi Avraham Sebrow and Rabbi Moshe Meiselman, in the Five Towns Jewish Times. The essence of the debate seems to be whether all things in the Torah (like creation and the flood) are to be taken literally or allegorically. Both sides bring their scholarly research to make their points. Fascinating stuff. The proof to their arguments seems to be in how one interprets the writings of different Rishonim, Achronim, commentaries and some more recent scholarly work. The biggest debates regarding what some Rabbi once said and what he meant by it always come after their death. This makes for great intellectual theatre and so long as we can continue to debate peacefully, strengthens us as practicing Jews.

I'm confident that 100 plus years from now, scholars studying Orthodox Judaism in the late 20th and early 21st centuries will read such dialogues to form their own opinions about what and how we debated the many issues facing us. Unfortunately, they will also be exposed to other things that get published these days. Turn past the debate between Rabbis Meiselman and Sebrow and read about the annual Agudath Israel Convention and you will find that intellectual debate is often the farthest thing from some minds. Intellectual suppression is a better description.

A prevailing theme of the convention was that technology; specifically the internet and devices like the iPhone and BlackBerry are destroying the Torah world. One Rabbi went so far as to quote Rav Kanievsky who said that one should accept death rather than go on the internet.

RABBI BILLET ON FATHER DESBOIS: OP-EDS

Read article re: Rabbi Billet and Father Debois.

People are crazy ! Especially our own.
I am halfway through the book and finding it fascinating.
Leba

Lenore,
Thanks for coming out publicly and supporting Rabbi Billet.  I too had no problem with the shul extending an invitation to a clergyman who is performing a Kiddush Hashem.  What I've not seen in any public statements is that YU honored Father Patrick Desbois at its recent commencement in May where he received an honorary doctorate for his humanitarian work.

Parshat Vayishlach-Ghetto Parsha

In this week's parsha, after Yaakov (Jacob) encountered his evil brother Esav, it turned out to be a peaceful meeting, seeing the brotherly love, Yaakov says to his bro:
                 " קַח נָא אֶת בִּרְכָתִי אֲשֶׁר הֻבָאת לָךְ כִּי חַנַּנִי אֱ־לֹהִים וְכִי יֶשׁ לִי כֹל.."
..Kach Na Et Birchati Asher Huvaat Lach
Ki Chanani Elokim V'Chi Yesh Li Kol

"..Take my gift please, which has been brought to you, for Hashem has shown me grace, and because I have everything."

Wow, how sah-weet. Yaak's such a nice bro-dawg.
While this statement sounds like a normal nice gesture, it happens to be jam packed with holiness and metaphorical beauty.
What's this gift all about, why does Yaak explain it so cryptically and why the heezy does he think he has "everything"?

Let's start slow and smoothly. Jake tells Eisav to take בִּרְכָתִי   (Birchati) 'my gift'. This one word has so much meaning to it, I'm gettin all fahklehmpt (Yiddish for: excitingly overwhelmed).
The word  shares the same root (three letters, .ב.ר.כ --bet, reish, chuf) as the word ברכה (bracha) blessing, and בְּרֵכָה (breicha) 'pool".
What exactly is a gift? A gift is a blessing, a pool of blessing granted to us from G-d. Everything that we have is a gift. Everything that we have is because G-d wants us to have it. And it's our job to be appreciative, grateful and responsible in using that gift for holy and righteous pursuits. A pool is an overflow of something, a large amount of water. And water is life.

We see that Yaakov says: "my gift, which has been brought to you "- meaning, "I am not bringing it to you yo, it's all Hashem. I am not causing the cookies to crumble this way, G-d is great and is granting you this gift that I happen to be the messenger for." Yaakov realizes something ridiculously amazing, everything a person does, every act that effects another is a G-d'ly decree and is being sent through people, such as Yaak, as messengers to carry out the act. In the process, we happen to make some buddies and fans, which is G-d's way of encouraging human relationships and connection. Through serving Hashem right, and being his messengers to carry out good things, leading a holy life- it's a byproduct that we make some friends since we are as Jews, supposed to be nice to each other and 'hook a brotha up' (Ebonic for: help out a friend). Yaakov then says that "The whole purpose I got this gift, the whole reason for it, is not because I'm high and mighty and I deserve it, but " כִּי חַנַּנִי אֱ־לֹהִים " (ki chanani Elokim) because G-d has shown me grace. "
While Jake is referring to his cattle and surplus of livestock, this actually refers to every itsy witsy thing we have! What a tremendous lesson to learn from here, especially since- Yaakov had to work uber hard to get everything he has, especially through a life of being tricked by his pops-in-law into marrying the wrong wife and then working so hard, and then his father-in-law chases him down wrongfully accusing him of stealing his idols.. I mean our forefather has been through so much and still is able to see G-d so clearly. Woa, yo...woa, indeed.

The last and most spectacular part of Yaakov's offer is when he says," וְכִי יֶשׁ לִי כֹל " -V'Chi Yesh Li Kol- and because I have everything.
Seriously Jake, everything? Do you really feel that way?

Parshas Vayishlach
A Huge Goal!

By Rabbi Label Lam

And Yaakov remained alone and a man wrestled with him until the break of dawn. And he saw that he could not defeat him so he grabbed him in the hollow of his thigh and he dislocated the hollow of Yaakov's thigh with his wrestling with him. And he said, "Send me because the dawn has broken." And he said, "I will not send you unless you bless me." And he said to him, "What's your name?" and he said, "Yaakov!" And he said, "No long will your name be Yaakov but rather Israel, because you struggled with the Divine and man and you prevailed." And Yaakov asked and he said, "Tell me please, what your name is?" And he said, "Why is it that you ask for my name?" And he blessed him there. (Breishis 32:25-30)

Yaakov sure had a rough night that night he wrestled with the "man"-angel but as a result he ended up with an upgraded name- title "Israel" and mighty blessing to boot. Oddly Yaakov benefited greatly from that rugged encounter. It's no secret that the so called wrestling match that lasted all night really represents our struggle too with the Yetzer Hora throughout the entirety our lives and all of history. It sounds perverse but when we prevail over the Yetzer Hora- the evil inclination really becomes our biggest friend! How is that so?

Rabbi Sholom Schwadron, the famous Maggid of Jerusalem, noticed that one of the regular attendees of a teen learning group was surprisingly absent on Sunday and Monday. Deeply concerned about his wellbeing, on Tuesday the Rabbi went to meet the boy at his home. He inquired about the reason he missed consecutive days. "I know you for years and you never missed a day of learning yet. I am sure that something serious is going on. Please tell me what's happening." The boy was embarrassed at first but he eventually decided to disclose his secret reason for being absent but not without first explaining his hesitancy to divulge it. "I would tell you Rebbe but you just won't understand." "Try me," begged Reb Sholom, "I will try my hardest to understand."

Certain he would be misunderstood by a Rabbi, who had probably had never seen a soccer ball in his life he confessed, "I missed because of the soccer finals. It's the championship all this week and I must listen to the games! I'll be back next week for sure!"

Rabbi Schwadron listened with interest. "I'm sure that this game of soccer must be quite exciting. Tell me," he asked, "How do you play this game of soccer? What's the object? "Well," began the student filled with enthusiasm, "there are eleven players, and the object is to kick a ball into the netting of the goal. No one but the goal-keeper can move the ball with his hands or arms!" Rabbi Schwadron's face brightened! "Oh! Is that all? So just go there, kick the ball in the goal, and get back to learning!" The boy laughed. "Rebbe, you don't understand! The opposing team also has eleven men and a goal-keeper, and their job is to stop our team from getting the ball into their goal!" "Tell me," Rabbi Schwadron whispered. These other men on the other team, are they there all day and night?" "Of course not Rebbe, they go home at night!"

Rabbi Schwadron huddled close and in all earnest asked. "Why don't you sneak into the stadium in the evening and kick the ball into the goal when they are not looking! Then you can win and return to learning Torah!" The boy threw his hands up in frustration. "Rebbe! You don't understand. It's of no real value to kick a ball into an empty net if there is no one trying to stop you!"

"Aha!" cried Reb Sholom in absolute victory. "Now think a moment and listen to what you just said! It is no trick to come to learn Torah only when nothing is trying to hold you back! It is when the urge to skip is so overpowering, when the Yetzer Hora is blocking the goal, that's when you can score real points. Come tomorrow and you can't imagine how much your Torah learning will be worth!" The next day, amazingly the boy came to learn and he scored a huge goal!

The Kiss of Dot

Rabbi M. Kamenetzky

In the English language, we have italics, either to draw attention to or to hint at an otherwise homonymic meaning. Sometimes, a word is placed in bold face or ensconced in quotation marks to achieve the same end. The Torah, on the other hand, seldom has extraneous enhancements of its words. Instead, in rare occasions, it leaves out letters, hinting to the hidden meaning.

On even rarer occasions, the Torah adds symbols, tiny ones, dots placed above the word. They tell us to look deeper, to search beyond the words. And this week, in the narrative detailing the encounter between Yaakov and his brother Esav, the Torah uses those dots.

They appear during an emotional encounter, Yaakov lifting his eyes and seeing "Esau was coming, and with him were four hundred men. Fear and trepidation seized him as he positioned the women and children in safety. Then he himself went on ahead of them and bowed earthward seven times until he reached his brother" (Genesis 33:2). The Torah tells us that Yaakov's fears seemed to be tenuous. "Esau ran toward him, embraced him, fell upon his neck, and he kissed him; then they wept."

The word that means "and he kissed him" has small dots above it. It means that there is some something going on, in this case above the kiss.

Rashi quotes various opinions in the Medrash, each stating its interpretation of the dots. The Medrash tells us a fascinating reason for the dots. Esav's intent was to bite Yaakov on the neck, miraculously Yaakov's neck hardened and the pain in Esav's teeth caused him to cry.

But, if that is the case, why does the Torah highlight the word, "and he kissed him" with dots? Let it just say and he tried to bite him. Just state what happened!

After the Munich Conference had ended on September 30, 1938, English Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich Pact with German leader Adolf Hitler. The pact acceded to Hitler's demands for cession of the Sudetenland, a German-speaking region of Czechoslovakia, to Germany. Chamberlain was excited. He returned to England and on the steps of 10 Downing Street declared, "This morning I had another talk with the German Chancellor, Herr Hitler, and here is the paper which bears his name upon it as well as mine." Shouts of excitement erupted from the gathered crowd. To the cheering crowd he read the statement.

"We, the German Führer and Chancellor, and the British Prime Minister, have had a further meeting today and are agreed in recognizing that the question of Anglo-German relations is of the first importance for our two countries and for Europe.

"We regard the agreement signed last night, and the Anglo-German Naval Agreement, as symbolic of the desire of our two peoples never to go to war with one another again."

Wild cheers broke out, the crowd reiterating the last syllables of the Prime Minister's statement. Chamberlain continued. "We are resolved that the method of consultation shall be the method adopted to deal with any other questions that may concern our two countries, and we are determined to continue our efforts to remove possible sources of difference, and thus to contribute to assure the peace of Europe."

He ended his short statement with the following words that would haunt him and his memory until this day. "My good friends, for the second time in our history, a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing peace with honor. I believe it is peace for our time... Go home and get a nice quiet sleep."

Eleven months later, England was thrust into its bloodiest war, with the partner that was to bring "peace with honor."

Perhaps, in its cryptic coding, the Torah is telling us a message for eternity. The kiss, the pact, the embrace and even the handshake of our enemy, must be looked upon with dire caution. Behind the ultimate kiss may lay the desire to bite. And though he ends up kissing you, you may never know what his original intent was and what made him change his mind. Esav kissed Yaakov, but his intent to harm was changed ; all Yaakov felt was a kiss. But the Torah warns us to watch the dots. Because the kiss of dot may just be the kiss of death.

Strangers No More on HBO

At last year's Oscar ceremony, Israel won the prize for best Short Documentary with a film entitled Strangers No More . It will be broadcast on HBO 13 times this month and I recommend it highly,  The movie is a total of 40 minutes.

Strangers No More tells the very moving story of  the Bialik-Rogozin School located in Tel Aviv.  This school has a high population of  non-Jewish children whose families have fled religious and political persecution,  poverty, and even genocide to find asylum in the Jewish State. Strangers No More follows several students as they struggle to acclimate to life in a new land while slowly opening up to share their stories of hardship and tragedy. With tremendous effort and dedication, the school provides the support these children need to recover from their past. Together, the bonds between teacher and student, and among the students themselves, enables them to create new lives in this exceptional community.

If you have a recordable DVD and can record the program for our RCBE library that would be greatly appreciated!

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
